Randomized Trial : D-Glyceric Acid Activates Mitochondrial Metabolism in 50–60-Year-Old Healthy Humans

Background: Based on earlier studies, natural metabolite D-glyceric acid (DGA) does not seem to play any role in whole-body metabolism. Nevertheless, one ethanol oxidation-related rat study with controversial results raised our interest. According to preparatory studies for the regulatory approval of DGA, some highly conserved mechanism seems to subtly activate the cellular energy metabolism. Targeting the Activin Receptor Signaling to Counteract the Multi-Systemic Complications of Cancer and Its Treatments

Muscle wasting, i.e., cachexia, frequently occurs in cancer and associates with poor prognosis and increased morbidity and mortality. Anticancer treatments have also been shown to contribute to sustainment or exacerbation of cachexia, thus affecting quality of life and overall survival in cancer patients. Pre-clinical studies have shown that blocking activin receptor type 2 (ACVR2) or its ligands and their downstream signaling can preserve muscle mass in rodents bearing experimental cancers, as well as in chemotherapy-treated animals. In-depth characterization of denitrifier communities across different soil ecosystems in the tundra

Abstract Background In contrast to earlier assumptions, there is now mounting evidence for the role of tundra soils as important sources of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O). However, the microorganisms involved in the cycling of N2O in this system remain largely uncharacterized. Since tundra soils are variable sources and sinks of N2O, we aimed at investigating differences in community structure across different soil ecosystems in the tundra. Työkulttuurien jännitteitä koulutusyhteisöissä

Tarkastelemme artikkelissa jännitteitä koulutusyhteisöjen työkulttuureissa. Lähestymme aihetta opettajankoulutuksen kehittämiseen orientoituneesta koulutusmallista valmistuneiden opettajien kokemusten avulla. Tutkimuksen empiirisenä aineistona on 13 puolistrukturoitua yksilöhaastattelua, jotka kerättiin koulutusmalliin osallistuneilta opettajilta. Teoriasidonnaisessa sisällönanalyysissa keskityttiin yhteisön työkulttuuriin etsien myös sen vaikeammin havaittavia elementtejä, Scheinin (2017) sanoin perusolettamuksia.

Discovery of an Exceptionally Strong β -Decay Transition of $^{20}$F and Implications for the Fate of Intermediate-Mass Stars

A significant fraction of stars between 7-11 solar masses are thought to become supernovae, but the explosion mechanism is unclear. The answer depends critically on the rate of electron capture on $^{20}$Ne in the degenerate oxygen-neon stellar core. However, due to the unknown strength of the transition between the ground states of $^{20}$Ne and $^{20}$F, it has not previously been possible to fully constrain the rate. By measuring the transition, we have established that its strength is exceptionally large and enhances the capture rate by several orders of magnitude. Constant sign and nodal solutions for parametric anisotropic $(p, 2)$-equations

We consider an anisotropic ▫$(p, 2)$▫-equation, with a parametric and superlinear reaction term.Weshow that for all small values of the parameter the problem has at least five nontrivial smooth solutions, four with constant sign and the fifth nodal (sign-changing). Ultrafast solvent-assisted level crossing in 1-Naphthol

The nonadiabatic inversion dynamics of the energetic order of the electronic excited states of the photoacid 1-naphthol have been revealed by ultrafast spectroscopy on a femtosecond timescale (see picture; IC=internal conversion). The energetic order of the excited states La and Lb of 1-naphthol is reversed in 60 fs in polar dimethyl sulfoxide solvent.
