Generating ultra-short high-energy pulses using dissipative soliton resonance: Pulse compression schemes

2011

Dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) refers to a phenomenon where the energy of the stable soliton solution increases to extremely large values in a nonlinear dissipative system modeled by the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) [1]. It occurs in the vicinity of a specific hyper-surface in the multi-dimensional space of the CGLE parameters. The phenomenon has applications in designing laser oscillators generating ultra-high energy pulses, since the dynamics of such lasers can be well-modeled by the CGLE. The DSR was first found in normally-dispersive media, in concordance with the current design trend for high-energy mode-locked laser oscillators [2–4]. However, we have sho…

Optimization of soliton transmissions in dispersion-managed fiber links

1998

We propose a simple optimization criterion (including the best launch point position in-between amplifiers) for the design of soliton transmission lines. The present approach is shown to minimize energy scattering from the solitons into the continuum.

Perturbations, internal modes and noise in dispersion-managed soliton transmission

2005

We apply the theory of soliton internal modes to characterize the dynamics of small perturbations in the dispersion-managed soliton transmission regime. We extend our study to the case of random initial perturbations calculating several realizations and obtaining accurate descriptions of their statistics.

Slowdown and speedup of light pulses using the self-compensating photorefractive response

2011

We study theoretically the effects of pulse slowdown and speedup in ferroelectric Sn2P2S6 possessing a self-compensating photorefractive response. It is shown that both these effects can be implemented in one sample for sufficiently large values of the coupling strength. In contrast to other types of the photorefractive response (local and nonlocal), the output pulses do not suffer from strong spatial amplification and broadening.

Noise effects on gap wave propagation in a nonlinear discrete LC transmission line

2007

International audience; We report here the results of numerical investigation of noise effects on the propagation in a nonlinear waveguide modeled by a discrete electrical line. Considering a periodic signal of frequency exceeding the natural cutoff frequency of this system, we show that noise can be used to trigger soliton generation in the medium. Besides the classical stochastic resonance signature exhibited by each oscillator of the network, our simulation results reveal in particular that the signal-to-noise ratio remains almost constant in the whole network for an appropriate amount of noise. This interesting feature insures for the generated solitons a quality preserved propagation a…

Fluxons in Josephson Transmission Lines

1996

The superconducting Josephson junctions (Barone and Paterno 1982; Parmentier 1978; Lomdahl 1985; Likharev 1986; Pedersen 1986) have proven to be one of the most successful testing grounds for nonlinear wave theory; their use for information processing and storage is quite attractive. In the long Josephson junction or transmission line, the physical quantity of interest is a quantum of magnetic flux, or a fluxon, which has a soliton behavior. It is a remarkably robust and stable object, which can be easily manipulated at high speed and stored electronically. Consequently it should be used as a basic bit in information processing systems.

Variational theory of soliplasmon resonances

2013

We present a first-principles derivation of the variational equations describing the dynamics of the interaction of a spatial soliton and a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagating along a metal/dielectric interface. The variational ansatz is based on the existence of solutions exhibiting differentiated and spatially resolvable localized soliton and SPP components. These states, referred to as soliplasmons, can be physically understood as bound states of a soliton and a SPP. Their respective dispersion relations permit the existence of a resonant interaction between them, as pointed out in Ref.[1]. The existence of soliplasmon states and their interesting nonlinear resonant behavior has …

Soliton-plasmon resonances as Maxwell nonlinear bound states

2012

We demonstrate that soliplasmons (soliton–plasmon bound states) appear naturally as eigenmodes of nonlinear Maxwell’s equations for a metal/Kerr interface. Conservative stability analysis is performed by means of finite element numerical modeling of the time-independent nonlinear Maxwell equations. Dynamical features are in agreement with the presented nonlinear oscillator model.
