Variability of Soil Organic Carbon and radiocarbon in a Mediterranean benchmark Vertisol

Organic matter and microbial community in anthropogenic soils of arid environment.

Anthropogenic soils as the marker
2017
This article aims to support the Anthropogenic soils, the ones markedly affected by human activities, as the most meaningful marker for the onset of the Anthropocene. Although diachronous and not uniformly distributed throughout the world, these soils in fact show more prominently and potentially longer in time than other proposed markers for the impact of humans on the Earth surface.
Volatile components from flowers of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder, C. solstitialis L., ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostàl wild growing in S…
2008
The volatile constituents of the flowerheads of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder and C. solstitialis L. ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostal were extracted by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 113 components were identified. Fatty acids and hydrocarbons were the most abundant components in the oils. Caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide were the main compounds of the sesquiterpene fraction. The study on the biological activity of the oils shows no significant activity.

Selenium and heavy metals content in some Mediterranean soils
2010
Abstract The study of metal contents in industrial, agricultural or/and polluted soils compared with natural or unpolluted soils is currently necessary to obtain reference values and to assess soil contamination. Nonetheless, very few works published appear in international journals on elements like Se, Li and Sr in Spanish soils. This study determines the total levels of Se, Li, Sr, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Fe, Mn and Ba in 14 natural (unpolluted) soils (Gypsisols, Leptosols, Arenosols and Acrisols), 14 agricultural soils (Anthrosols, Fluvisols and Luvisols), and 4 industrial–urban affected-surface soil horizons (Anthrosols and Fluvisols) of Eastern Spain. The geochemical baselin…
Abundance of cellular material and proteins in the atmosphere.
2005
Suspended atmospheric particles play a crucial role in any global climate scenario: They can both enforce and suppress radiative forcing. In developing climate modeling further, a deeper understanding of atmospheric aerosol is needed. Because of extreme local and temporal variations, proper incorporation of aerosols into models requires modeling of the aerosol itself. It turns out that cellular material and proteins compose up to 25% of the atmospheric aerosol. Consequently, the source strength of the biogenic aerosol in general must be corrected and should be estimated on the order of other major aerosol sources.
Aerosol optical properties and direct radiative forcing based on measurements from the China Aerosol Remote Sensing Network (CARSNET) in eastern China
2018
Aerosol pollution in eastern China is an unfortunate consequence of the region's rapid economic and industrial growth. Here, sun photometer measurements from seven sites in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) from 2011 to 2015 were used to characterize the climatology of aerosol microphysical and optical properties, calculate direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) and classify the aerosols based on size and absorption. Bimodal size distributions were found throughout the year, but larger volumes and effective radii of fine-mode particles occurred in June and September due to hygroscopic growth and/or cloud processing. Increases in the fine-mode particles in June and September caused AOD440 nm &…
Response of Vertisols, Andosols, and Alisols to paddy management
2016
Abstract Interchanging submergence and drainage in paddy soils induce alternating redox conditions. It is known that this causes changes in organic carbon stocks, in amounts and crystallinity of Fe oxides as well as transformation of clay minerals and subsequent changes in cation exchange capacity (CEC). However, the influence of the initial soil type on the extent of these changes is not yet well understood. Therefore, we studied paddy soils that derived from three different soil types (Vertisols, Andosols, Alisols) on volcanic parent material in Java (Indonesia). To account for the variability in parent materials, we additionally sampled sandstone-derived Alisols in China. Adjacent non-pa…
Differences of stabilized organic carbon fractions and microbiological activity along Mediterranean Vertisols and Alfisols profiles
2010
This study examined the chemical and structural properties of humic substances and microbiological activity in order to verify differences in carbon dynamics along soil profiles in two Vertisols (Typic Haploxerert and Xeric Epiaquert) and two Alfisols (Mollic Haploxeralf and Ultic Haploxeralf) developed under Mediterranean climate in Italy. Humification parameters, thermal methods, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG), together with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to characterize humic acids (HA). Microbiological activity of soils was assessed by basal respiration, metabolic quotient (qCO2) and Cmic:Corg rat…
