Aerosolu piesārņojuma un trokšņa līmeņa novērtējums bērnu rotaļu laukumos Rīgas centrā
2019
One-sensor electronic olfactometer for rapid sorting of fresh fruit juices
2001
Abstract A low-cost electronic olfactometer was developed, based on virtual sensors array (an array of signals from a single metal oxide sensor) and on our proprietary semi-automated sampling system. This concept enables us to drastically improve the sensitivity and selectivity of the entire olfactometer to make it suited to food products analysis. Each step of the prototype was checked separately in earlier work, and finally the system performance was evaluated first on pure chemicals, and then at-line for grape juice during grape-harvesting in Champagne. It is shown that over a 3-week vintage period, the drift of the unique-sensor was quite low (absolute baseline value: avg., 2152; std., …
Comparative Study of Different Methods for the Prediction of Drug–Polymer Solubility
2015
In this study, a comparison of different methods to predict drug-polymer solubility was carried out on binary systems consisting of five model drugs (paracetamol, chloramphenicol, celecoxib, indomethacin, and felodipine) and polyvinylpyrrolidone/vinyl acetate copolymers (PVP/VA) of different monomer weight ratios. The drug-polymer solubility at 25 °C was predicted using the Flory-Huggins model, from data obtained at elevated temperature using thermal analysis methods based on the recrystallization of a supersaturated amorphous solid dispersion and two variations of the melting point depression method. These predictions were compared with the solubility in the low molecular weight liquid ana…
Time-resolving Analysis of Cryotropic Gelation of Water/Poly(Vinyl Alcohol) Solutions via Small Angle Neutron Scattering
2007
The structural transformations occurring in initially homogeneous aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) through application of freezing (-13 degrees C) and thawing (20 degrees C) cycles is investigated by time resolving small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). These measurements indicate that formation of gels of complex hierarchical structure arises from occurrence of different elementary processes, involving different length and time scales. The fastest process that could be detected by our measurements during the first cryotropic treatment consists of the crystallization of the solvent. However, solvent crystallization is incomplete, and an unfrozen liquid microphase more concentr…
Slow Crystallization Kinetics of Poly(vinyl alcohol) in Confined Environment during Cryotropic Gelation of Aqueous Solutions
2006
The gelation kinetics of aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) during freezing at −13 °C has been investigated with time-resolved small angle neutron scattering. Crystallization of PVA takes place inside an unfrozen liquid microphase that forms in the matrix of ice crystals and follows a first-order kinetics during the early stages and becomes very slow in the later stages with an apparent Avrami exponent lower than 1. Crystallization of PVA at low temperatures is responsible of formation of strong physical gels upon defrosting, provided that the concentration of PVA is higher than a critical value.
Mesoscopic and Microscopic Investigation on Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels in the Presence of Sodium Decylsulfate
2007
The structure of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels formed as a result of freeze/thaw treatments of aqueous solutions of the polymer (11 wt % PVA) in the freshly prepared state is analyzed through the combined use of small (SANS) and ultrasmall (USANS) angle neutron scattering techniques. The structure of these hydrogels may be described in terms of polymer rich regions, with dimensions of the order of 1-2 microm, dispersed in a water rich phase, forming two bicontinuous phases. The PVA chains in the polymer rich phase form a network where the cross-linking points are mainly crystalline aggregates of PVA having average dimensions of approximately 45 A. The structural organization of freeze…
E-beam crosslinked, biocompatible functional hydrogels incorporating polyaniline nanoparticles
2012
Abstract PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12 MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission…
Applications of soluble polymeric supports

In a new theoretical approach the separation of a pair of chain molecules (measured thermodynamically by the second osmotic virial coefficient A2) is treated as a two-step process: In the first step the molecules are detached from each other by the addition of solvent—keeping their dimensions constant—and in the second step the now isolated coils are allowed to relax into their equilibrium dimensions. For the description of the second step, in which only segments belonging to one molecule take part, an intra-molecular interaction parameter is introduced on the basis of the intrinsic viscosity. The present two-parameter approach yields A2 = A + σ M−(1−a) for the dependence of A2 on the molec…
A Viscosity Equation for Minimizers of a Class of Very Degenerate Elliptic Functionals
2013
We consider the functional $$J(v) = \int_\varOmega\bigl[f\bigl(|\nabla v|\bigr) - v\bigr] dx, $$ where Ω is a bounded domain and f:[0,+∞)→ℝ is a convex function vanishing for s∈[0,σ], with σ>0. We prove that a minimizer u of J satisfies an equation of the form $$\min\bigl(F\bigl(\nabla u, D^2 u\bigr), |\nabla u|-\sigma\bigr)=0 $$ in the viscosity sense.
