Handling of Small Scale Structures of the Irradiance Field for Solar Energy System Analysis – A Review

2016

Abstract Satellite derived irradiance information currently approaches a status as standard input for solar energy system analysis. Due to intrinsic limitations in spatial and temporal resolution, these data fail to give information of the full dynamics of the irradiance field in space and time. The analysis of systems with sensibility to details of the temporal evolution of the irradiance field and systems with sensibility to the spatial inhomogeneity of the field require knowledge of its fine-structured. Thus, methods for a respective enhancement of the satellite derived data are needed. This contribution presents various approaches discussed for setting up respective input data.

Equilibrium fluid-crystal interfacial free energy of bcc-crystallizing aqueous suspensions of polydisperse charged spheres

2015

The interfacial free energy is a central quantity in crystallization from the meta-stable melt. In suspensions of charged colloidal spheres, nucleation and growth kinetics can be accurately measured from optical experiments. In previous work, from this data effective non-equilibrium values for the interfacial free energy between the emerging bcc-nuclei and the adjacent melt in dependence on the chemical potential difference between melt phase and crystal phase were derived using classical nucleation theory. A strictly linear increase of the interfacial free energy was observed as a function of increased meta-stability. Here, we further analyze this data for five aqueous suspensions of charg…

Bio-orthogonal Red and Far-Red Fluorogenic Probes for Wash-Free Live-Cell and Super-resolution Microscopy

2021

Small-molecule fluorophores enable the observation of biomolecules in their native context with fluorescence microscopy. Specific labeling via bio-orthogonal tetrazine chemistry combines minimal label size with rapid labeling kinetics. At the same time, fluorogenic tetrazine–dye conjugates exhibit efficient quenching of dyes prior to target binding. However, live-cell compatible long-wavelength fluorophores with strong fluorogenicity have been difficult to realize. Here, we report close proximity tetrazine–dye conjugates with minimal distance between tetrazine and the fluorophore. Two synthetic routes give access to a series of cell-permeable and -impermeable dyes including highly fluorogen…

Chronic neural probe for simultaneous recording of single-unit, multi-unit, and local field potential activity from multiple brain sites

2017

Drug resistant focal epilepsy can be treated by resecting the epileptic focus requiring a precise focus localisation using stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) probes. As commercial SEEG probes offer only a limited spatial resolution, probes of higher channel count and design freedom enabling the incorporation of macro and microelectrodes would help increasing spatial resolution and thus open new perspectives for investigating mechanisms underlying focal epilepsy and its treatment. This work describes a new fabrication process for SEEG probes with materials and dimensions similar to clinical probes enabling recording single neuron activity at high spatial resolution.Polyimide is used as a bi…

Enhancement of structural, functional and antioxidant properties of fish gelatin films using Maillard reactions

2018

International audience; This study investigates the effect of Maillard reactions (MR) on the physico-chemical and biological properties of fish gelatin based edible films. Glucose was incorporated in gelatin film forming solutions at different glucose/lysine molar ratios: 0.5/1.0, 1.0/1.0 and 5.0/1.0. The MR was then induced by heating films at 90 °C for 24 h in dry conditions. Color changes and browning index measurements were used to pursue the MR kinetic. Results showed that the development of MR products was dependent on the glucose content and on the reaction time. Mechanical and thermal properties of treated films displayed an increase in tensile strength, elongation at break and glas…

Physical chemical properties and kinetics of redox processes in water/soybean oil microemulsions

2008

Dielectric properties of water/lecithin/cyclohexane gels

1993

Dielectric relaxation measurements in the frequency range 0.1–15 GHz have been carried out on water/lecithin/cyclohexane gels using a time domain reflectometry method (TDR). Dielectric dispersions describable in terms of a power law typical of percolated systems, but with exponents significantly different from those characterizing statically or dynamically percolated systems are observed. The dielectric dispersions, attributed to water and/or lecithin head group rotational motions, indicate that these motions are characterized by a wide spectrum of relaxation times.

High Resolution-magic Angle Spinning NMR Study of Olive Leaves

2013

In recent years HR-MAS 1H NMR spectroscopy has proven to be a useful tool for the rapid determination of the metabolic profile of several solid and semisolid foods, such as fruits and vegetables, cheese and meat. Olive leaves are today recognized as direct sources of bioactive compounds and natural antioxidants (flavonoids, secoiridoids) suitable as food additives, and their extracts form the basis of beauty care products and pharmaceutical supplements. Thus, olive leaves are emerging as a new and potentially important product for olive tree growing regions. In this report we present the application of 1H and 13C HR-MAS 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy for the characterization and analysis of tri…

In vitrobioaccessibility of iron and zinc in fortified fruit beverages

2009

Summary Iron and zinc bioaccessibility was estimated in the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of six different fortified fruit beverages (Fb) containing iron and/or zinc and/or skimmed milk (M). Solubility values can be used to establish trends in relative bioavailability of iron and zinc, as the first stage towards mineral bioavailability comprises solubility in the intestinal tract. FbFe, FbFeM and FbFeZnM samples showed iron bioaccessibility above 88%, differing (P < 0.05) from those of FbFeZn (53%). In turn, FbZn, FbFeZn and FbZnM samples presented higher zinc bioaccessibility (above 68%), differing (P < 0.05) from those of FbFeZnM (48%). The presence of milk-derived caseinophosphopepti…
