Monitoring the evolution of coastline in Sicily by aerial photos and high resolution satellite imagery

Italy is one of the country more exposed to coasts erosion: about 1200 km of coasts on about 8350 km are moved back of about 25 m in the last 50 years. Particularly Sicily have about 300 km of coasts moved back. There are various reasons of this phenomenon: natural factor (climatic or physical-oceanographic) with environmental and economic effects. The paper reviews the activity of the Dipartimento di Rappresentazione of University of Palermo in cooperation with the Regional Agency of Environmental Protection (ARPA) about the coastline evolution in Sicily. High-resolution sonar system (MBS, SSS, Sub Bottom Profiler) was used to map and characterize Posidonia oceanica meadows, dead matte formations and to long-term monitor its progressive lower limit. Hydro-acoustic techniques allows to quickly acquire, at sufficiently low cost, a synoptic coverage of a large area and a high number of data by mean of non-destructive methods. Hence, they are recommended as useful tools for detecting and characterizing submerged aquatic vegetation.
Pigments and their solubility in and extractability by supercritical CO2 - I: the case of curcumin

A specially designed high-pressure cell was used simultaneously as extractor/autoclave and photometric cell in a Perkin Elmer Lambda 5 spectrophotometer. Based on this cell, a simple method was developed to determine the extractability of pigments by pure and by modified supercritical (sc) CO2. The method is demonstrated with curcumin from turmeric. With sc CO2 modified by 10% ethanol, the extraction yield for curcumin from two commercial finely ground dry turmeric samples was about 100%, measured by reference to the (complete) extraction of samples of the same charge with pure ethanol under standard conditions. Background: Dysphagia in neurologically impaired children is associated with feeding difficulties, malnutrition and aspiration pneumonia. Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) has been used in the diagnosis of motility disorders affecting the swallowing process. The aim of this study was to analyze swallowing functions in NI children by using HRM in order to establish swallow parameters identifying inhalation risk. Physics opportunities with the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array : AGATA

New physics opportunities are opening up by the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array, AGATA, as it evolves to the full 4π instrument. AGATA is a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer, solely built from highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors, capable of measuring γ rays from a few tens of keV to beyond 10 MeV, with unprecedented efficiency, excellent position resolution for individual γ-ray interactions, and very high count-rate capability. As a travelling detector AGATA will be employed at all major current and near-future European research facilities delivering stable and radioactive ion beams. peerReviewed
Lignin recovery from spent alkaline pulping liquors using acidification, membrane separation, and related processing steps: A Review

The separation of lignin from the black liquor generated during alkaline pulping is reviewed in this article with an emphasis on chemistry. Based on published accounts, the precipitation of lignin from spent pulping liquor by addition of acids can be understood based on dissociation equilibria of weak acid groups, which affects the solubility behavior of lignin-related chemical species. Solubility issues also govern lignin separation technologies based on ultrafiltration membranes; reduction in membrane permeability is often affected by conditions leading to decreased solubility of lignin decomposition products and the presence of colloidal matter. In the aqueous phase, fine particulate matter can form reactive species (RS) that influence the aging, properties, and health effects of atmospheric aerosols. In this study, we explore the RS yields of aerosol samples from a remote forest (Hyytiälä, Finland) and polluted urban locations (Mainz, Germany; Beijing, China), and we relate the RS yields to different chemical constituents and reaction mechanisms.
