Solvent-Enhanced Diastereo- and Regioselectivity in the PdII-Catalyzed Synthesis of Six- and Eight-Membered Heterocycles viacis-Aminopalladation

2009

The Pd(II)-catalyzed intramolecular oxidative cyclization of tosyl-protected cis- and trans-N-allyl-2-aminocyclohexanecarboxamides was examined, and efficient syntheses of cyclohexane-fused pyrimidin-4-ones and 1,5-diazocin-6-ones were developed. In the course of the research, a marked solvent effect was observed on both the regio- and diastereoselectivity. Additionally, a novel Pd(II)-mediated domino oxidation, oxidative amination reaction was discovered. Our experimental and theoretical findings suggest that the reactions proceed via a cis-aminopalladation mechanism.

Theoretical study of oligomeric alumatranes present in the chemistry of materials from micro to mesoporous molecular sieves and alumina composites

2008

Quantum chemical calculations using density functional theory have been carried out to investigate molecular precursors based on alumatranes which are one of the components with silatranes for the preparation of mesoporous aluminosilicate materials. In the same way, some oligomeric alumatranes of this study take part in chemical syntheses related to materials such as zeolites and alumina composite. Gas phase and solution equilibrium geometries of the alumatrane precursors were fully optimized at B3LYP level, modeling solvent effects using a self-consistent reaction field (SCRF). From these optimized geometries, calculations of the 1 H, 13 C and 27 Al NMR chemical shifts at GIAO/B3LYP/6-31G(…

Chain Connectivity and Conformational Variability of Polymers: Clues to an Adequate Thermodynamic Description of Their Solutions, 1

2003

This is the first of two parts investigating the Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, χ, as a function of composition and chain length. Part 1 encompasses experimental and theorical work. The former comprise the synthesis of poly(dimethylsiloxane)s with different molar mass and the measurements of their second second osmotic virial coefficients, A 2 , in solvents of diverse quality as a function of M via light scattering and osmotic pressures. The theorical analysis is performed by subdividing the dilution process into two clearly separable steps. It yields the following expression for χ ο , the χ value in range of pair interaction : χ ο = α - ζ λ. The parameter α measures the effect of con…

Explicit Solvation Matters: Performance of QM/MM Solvation Models in Nucleophilic Addition

2018

Nucleophilic addition onto a carbonyl moiety is strongly affected by solvent, and correctly simulating this solvent effect is often beyond the capability of single-scale quantum mechanical (QM) models. This work explores multiscale approaches for the description of the reversible and highly solvent-sensitive nucleophilic N|···C=O bond formation in an Me2N–(CH2)3–CH=O molecule. In the first stage of this work, we rigorously compare and test four recent quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) explicit solvation models, employing a QM description of water molecules in spherical regions around both the oxygen and the nitrogen atom of the solute. The accuracy of the models is benchmarked…

Hydrophobically Directed Aldol Reactions: Polystyrene-SupportedL-Proline as a Recyclable Catalyst for Direct Asymmetric Aldol Reactions in the Presen…

2007

The cover picture shows the aldol reaction between ketones and arylaldehydes carried out by using a polystyrene-supported L-proline catalyst. This material furnishes aldol products in high yields and stereoselectivities. Screening of solvents showed that these reactions take place only in the presence of water. This solvent effect, coupled with the high stereoselectivities observed, has been explained by the formation of a hydrophobic core in the inner surface of the resin with the hydrophilic proline moiety in the resin/water interface. Such a microenvironment promotes the aldol reaction and increases the stereoselectivity. Recycling investigations have shown that this material can be reus…

Introduction to the microsymposium and on the modulation of thermodynamic parameters relative to biomolecule-solvent interactions

1980

Abstract As a result of introducing a macromolecule in a solvent, changes in the structures of both solute and solvent are generally found. In this specific meaning we refer here to ‘relaxation phenomena’. The discussion will either concern or keep in a view the case of biomolecules and to which extent these changes are involved in their thermodynamic stability or functional structure: Dr. Ben-Naim will discuss hydrophobic interactions and structural changes in the solvent; Dr. Wen will focus on thermodynamic properties of aqueous solutions on hydrophobic solutes; Dr. Cordone, Dr. Fornili and myself shall discuss results of experiments concerning solutes on several types(proteins, polynucle…

Alkyl- and aryl-substituted corroles. 4. Solvent effects on the electrochemical and spectral properties of cobalt corroles.

2003

Solvent effects on the electrochemistry and spectroscopic properties of alkyl- and aryl-substituted corroles in nonaqueous media are reported. The oxidation and reduction of six compounds containing zero to seven phenyl or substituted phenyl groups on the macrocycle were studied in four different nonaqueous solvents (CH(2)Cl(2), PhCN, THF, and pyridine) containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate. Dimers were formed upon oxidation of all corroles in CH(2)Cl(2), but this was not the case in the other three solvents, where either monomers or dimers were formed upon oxidation depending upon the solvent Gutmann donor number and the number or location of aryl substituents on the macrocycl…

Experimental and theoretical studies on the electronic spectra of indole-3-acetic acid and its anionic and protonated species

1991

Abstract The geometrical and electronic structure of indole-3-acetic acid (IAH) have been investigated using the MINDO/3 molecular orbital method, the geometries being optimized by Rinaldi's method. The UV spectrum of IAH has been recorded in different solvents. The corresponding spectra of IAH + 2 and IA − were also respectively obtained, from IAH in different H 2 SO 4 /water mixtures and NaOH solutions. The agreement of experimental spectra with the ones theoretically calculated by the CNDO/M-Cl method after optimization of the κ parameter, is discussed. The p K a values of IAH have also been determined from the IAH + 2 spectra and are compared with literature data.

DNA nucleobase properties and photoreactivity: Modeling environmental effects

2009

Abstract The accurate ab initio quantum chemical (QM) method multiconfigurational second-order perturbation (CASSPT2)/complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) has been used in conjunction with molecular mechanics (MM) procedures to compute molecular properties and photoinduced reactivity of DNA/RNA nucleobases (NABs) in isolation and within a realistic environment, in which the double helix strand, the aqueous media, and the external counterions are included. It is illustrated that the use of an MM model is helpful both to account for short- and long-range effects of the system surrounding the QM molecular core and to provide the proper structural constraints that allow more acc…
