Abstract A direct procedure based on thermal desorption-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (TD–GC–MS–MS) was developed for the fast extraction of seven polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from sediments and soils. PCBs were directly extracted, from 20 to 75 mg of sample, without any chemical pre-treatment or use of organic solvents, after the addition of 10 µL internal standard (PCB 195) in acetone. Sample treatment was totally automated. PCBs were extracted at 250 °C for 20 min, using a helium flow and the PCBs were trapped in a cryogenic Tenax trap at −10 °C. Photochemical sample treatment: a greener approach to chlorobenzene determination in sediments.

Abstract Due to worker׳s exposure, solvent and stationary phases׳ consumption, sample purification is one of the most polluting steps in analytical procedures for determination of organic pollutants in real samples. The use of photochemical sample treatment represents a valid alternative methodology for extracts clean up allowing for a reduction of the used amount of organic solvents. The impact of solvent mixtures on neurobehavioral performance: conclusions from epidemiological data.

Abstract The review of epidemiological studies investigating the neurobehavioral effects of occupational exposure to solvent mixtures sought to contribute to the following issues: (1) Identification of affected cognitive and motor functions. (2) Identification of sensitive neuropsychological tests. (3) Analysis of exposure–effect relationships. The approach was based on the meta-analytical method of effect size estimates. Fifty-three groups from occupational studies were included in the meta-analysis. Dielectric Relaxations in Confined Hydrated Myoglobin

In this work we report the results of a broadband dielectric spectroscopy study on the dynamics of a globular protein, myoglobin, in confined geometry, i.e. encapsulated in a porous silica matrix, at low hydration levels, where about only one or two water layers surround the proteins. In order to highlight the specific effect of confinement in the silica host, we compared this system with hydrated myoglobin powders at the same hydration levels. In particolare sono stati studiati i Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) e le miscele di Liquidi Ionici (IL). I DES sono stati utilizzati come solventi per lo studio di reazioni organiche, usate per la formazione di nuovi legami C-C. Activity of a Heterogeneous Catalyst in Deep Eutectic Solvents: The Case of Carbohydrate Conversion into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Obtaining industrially relevant products from renewable resources and developing processes under the light of sustainable chemistry is a prominent endeavor of present-day chemical research. In this context, herein we investigated the dehydration of fructose and sucrose in deep eutectic solvents promoted by the ion-exchange resin Amberlyst 15 as heterogeneous catalyst. We optimized the reaction conditions in terms of temperature, catalyst loading, and initial amount of substrate. A Novel Cathode Material for Cathodic Dehalogenation of 1,1-Dibromo Cyclopropane Derivatives.

Leaded bronze turned out to be an excellent cathode material for the dehalogenation reaction of cyclopropanes without affecting the strained molecular entity. With this particular alloy, beneficial properties of lead cathodes are conserved, whereas the corrosion of cathode is efficiently suppressed. The solvent in the electrolyte determines whether a complete debromination reaction is achieved or if the process can be selectively stopped at the monobromo cyclopropane intermediate. Waste-free electrochemical oxidation of alchools in water

We describe a new sol-gel molecular electrode made of a thin layer of organosilica doped with the nitroxyl radical TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetrame-thylpiperidine-1-oxyl) electrodeposited on the surface of an ITO-coated glass and its employment as a selective and versatile oxidation catalyst in the electrochemical conversion of different alcohols to carbonyl compounds. Environmentally friendly water or a water/acetonitrile mixture buffered with bicarbonate is used as solvent. The electrode is highly stable and it can be reused for a prolonged period of time allowing easy separation from the products.
