Is the stripping technique a tissue-sparing procedure in large simple ovariancysts in children?

2008

Abstract Background Stripping of the cystic wall is performed by gynecologists to treat large ovarian cysts. Information in the pediatric population is poor. We prospectively evaluated the pathologic specimens of large ovarian cyst to determine whether the stripping technique is a tissue-sparing procedure even in this age. Methods We evaluated 5 patients. Samples were taken from the intermediate part of the cystic wall and from the layer covering the cyst during excision. The presence of ovarian tissue adjacent to the cyst wall, and the morphological features of the surrounding tissue were both evaluated. Pelvic ultrasound follow-up was also performed. Results Patients' mean age was 4.5 yea…

What is the relationship between chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency and multiple sclerosis?

2013

Abstract Although most of the research on multiple sclerosis was focused on its autoimmune aspects, researchers were also considering the roles of other factors, including vascular background of the disease. The idea that multiple sclerosis might be caused by stenoses of the veins draining the brain and spinal cord (the so-called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency), is currently hotly debated by scientific community. Despite conflicting reports, chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency seems to be a real clinical phenomenon. However, it remains uncertain how it should be defined and which tests should be used for its detection. Probably this vascular abnormality should be primaril…

Automated classification of focal breast lesions according to S-detect: validation and role as a clinical and teaching tool

2018

Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the diagnostic performance and the potential as a teaching tool of S-detect in the assessment of focal breast lesions. METHODS: 61 patients (age 21-84 years) with benign breast lesions in follow-up or candidate to pathological sampling or with suspicious lesions candidate to biopsy were enrolled. The study was based on a prospective and on a retrospective phase. In the prospective phase, after completion of baseline US by an experienced breast radiologist and S-detect assessment, 5 operators with different experience and dedication to breast radiology performed elastographic exams. In the retrospective phase, the 5 operators performed a retrospective assessment a…

Imaging assessment of paediatric Crohn's disease: A literature review

2019

Owing to the frequent absence of specific symptoms, diagnosis of Crohn's disease may be delayed, potentially leading to important patient morbidity, growth failure, pubertal delay, or a complicated form of the disease. In paediatric patients with Crohn's disease, radiation protection requires special consideration, and choosing the most appropriate imaging modality is crucial. All radiologists should be familiar with the main imaging characteristics of Crohn's disease. Therefore, the present study reviews the current literature on imaging modalities and main imaging characteristics of Crohn's disease. Magnetic resonance imaging is recommended for diagnosis of Crohn's disease in paediatric p…

Prenatal exposure to traffic-related air pollution and fetal growth in a cohort of pregnant women

2012

Objectives Scant evidence is available on effects of air pollution on longitudinally measured fetal biometry, and thus it remains unclear as to whether there are critical windows of exposure or specificity of effects. Our objective was to examine the association between exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) during pregnancy and fetal and neonatal anthropometry in a cohort of Spanish women. Methods Temporally adjusted land-use regression was used to estimate exposure to NO2 at home addresses. Biparietal diameter (BPD), abdominal circumference (AC), femur length (FL) and estimated fetal weight (EFW) were evaluated in each trimester by ultrasound. As neonatal outcomes, weight, length and head cir…

Symptomatic seizures in preterm newborns: A review on clinical features and prognosis

2018

Abstract Neonatal seizures are the most common neurological event in newborns, showing higher prevalence in preterm than in full-term infants. In the majority of cases they represent acute symptomatic phenomena, the main etiologies being intraventricular haemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, central nervous system infections and transient metabolic derangements. Current definition of neonatal seizures requires detection of paroxysmal EEG-changes, and in preterm newborns the incidence of electrographic-only seizures seems to be particularly high, further stressing the crucial role of electroencephalogram monitoring in this population. Imaging work-up includes an integration of serial…

Clinical use of intracoronary imaging. Part 1: guidance and optimization of coronary interventions. An expert consensus document of the European Asso…

2018

This Consensus Document is the first of two reports summarizing the views of an expert panel organized by the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) on the clinical use of intracoronary imaging including intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The first document appraises the role of intracoronary imaging to guide percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) in clinical practice. Current evidence regarding the impact of intracoronary imaging guidance on cardiovascular outcomes is summarized, and patients or lesions most likely to derive clinical benefit from an imaging-guided intervention are identified. The relevance of the u…

Intraluminal Doppler-sonography: a new device for data analysis and its in vitro test

2002

Summary form only given. A special data acquisition unit has been developed which allows to process on-line not only the mean-phasic Doppler shift signal but also to analyze the spectral contents and the received A-mode signal. The probe consists of a 3f-catheter which is activated by a pulsed transmitter-receiver (Millar). The carrier frequency is 20 MHz and the impulse repetition rate is 62.5 kHz. Two modular A/D converters are used. One digitizes directly the Doppler shift frequencies in the range less than 20 kHz (sampling rate 100 kHz, resolution 12 bit); the other digitizes the RF-signal (sampling rate 200 MHz, resolution 8 bit). For further processing, data are transferred via separa…
