Parameters for coronary plaque vulnerability assessed with multidetector computed tomography and intracoronary ultrasound correlation

2009

In the absence of a fixed relationship between plaque vulnerability and flow-limiting stenosis, alternative morphological expressions exist that could predict the liability of coronary lesions to rapidly progress or rupture, causing acute coronary syndromes. Modern multidetector computed tomography technology is capable of noninvasively detecting lesion location, attenuation, remodeling and calcification pattern, which may be considered as surrogate morphological markers of vulnerability and could contribute to increase the prognostic value of individual coronary plaque burden. Endoluminal ultrasonic examination of sessile polyps and early carcinomas of the rectum

1989

The results of conventional endosonographic techniques in the assessment of early carcinomas and sessile polyps of the rectum have been unsatisfactory. We therefore developed a new technique in which the rectal cavity is filled directly with water. Using this technique, the anatomy of small rectal tumors is preserved and the layers of the rectal wall are easier to differentiate, especially with a 10-MHz scanner. The clinical results in 66 patients demonstrate that this new technique is very accurate in the preoperative staging of adenomas and T1-carcinomas of the rectum.

Endoscopic management of a case of 'complete septate uterus with unilateral haematometra'

1995

Endoscopy and ultrasound was used to diagnose a 13 year old virgin girl who presented with dysmenorrhoea and suspected right side adnexal tumescence. The girl was found to have a complete septate uterus with non-communicating right hemicavity and haematometra, an exceptional type of Mullerian anomaly. After pretreatment with buserelin, hysteroscopic metroplasty was successfully performed.

Diagnostic Performance of an Artificial Intelligence System in Breast Ultrasound.

2021

Objectives We study the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) program designed to assist radiologists in the diagnosis of breast cancer, relative to measures obtained from conventional readings by radiologists. Methods A total of 10 radiologists read a curated, anonymized group of 299 breast ultrasound images that contained at least one suspicious lesion and for which a final diagnosis was independently determined. Separately, the AI program was initialized by a lead radiologist and the computed results compared against those of the radiologists. Results The AI program's diagnoses of breast lesions had concordance with the 10 radiologists' readings across a number of BI-RADS descri…

S-Detect characterization of focal breast lesions according to the US BI RADS lexicon: a pictorial essay

2020

High-resolution ultrasonography (US) is a valuable tool in breast imaging. Nevertheless, US is an operator-dependent technique: to overcome this issue, the American College of Radiology (ACR) has developed the breast imaging-reporting and data system (BI-RADS) US lexicon. Despite this effort, the variability in the assessment of focal breast lesions (FBLs) with the use of BI-RADS US lexicon is still an issue. Within this framework, evidence shows that computer-aided image analysis may be effective in improving the radiologist’s assessment of FBLs. In particular, S-Detect is a newly developed image-analytic computer program that provides assistance in morphologic analysis of FBLs seen on US …

Sonographic demonstration of a spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma following a sneeze: a case report and review of the literature

2020

Spontaneous rectus sheath hematoma (SRSH) is an uncommon cause of acute abdominal pain characterized by bleeding within the rectus sheath; it is a benign condition and, in most cases, it is treated conservatively. Bleeding of the abdominal wall is an unusual condition that is quite challenging to identify promptly and can be easily overlooked during a routine physical examination. In daily practice, anticoagulant therapy is one of the main risk factors for hemorrhagic events. In this respect, we report a rare case of spontaneous hematoma of the abdominal wall (diagnosed and monitored through an ultrasound examination) that arose after sneezing in a patient receiving anticoagulant treatment.

Comparison of biometric measurements using partial coherence interferometry and applanation ultrasound

2003

Abstract Purpose To compare and contrast axial length (AL) measurements assessed by ultrasound biometry and optical biometry. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods Optical biometry and ultrasound biometry were performed in 360 eyes to measure AL. Results In eyes with a clear-appearing crystalline lens, there was a statistically significant median difference in AL measurements between the 2 methods in eyes with a normal or long length. In eyes with cataract, there was a statistically significant median difference in AL measurements in eyes with a normal or short length. In these cases, optical biometry produced larger readings than ultras…

Endometrial response to concurrent treatment with vaginal progesterone and transdermal estradiol.

2012

ABSTRACT Objective To describe the effect of the intermittent administration of vaginal progesterone and a low-dose estradiol patch on endometrial stability, as assessed by the rate of amenorrhea and endometrial stimulation. Methods This was an open study in which 64 moderately symptomatic, postmenopausal women were treated in the outpatient clinic of our University Hospital for different intervals up to 1 year. The treatment consisted of a combination of patches delivering 25 µg/day estradiol and intravaginal pills containing 100 mg of micronized progesterone. Patches and pills were administered concomitantly in a twice-a-week protocol. The endometrial response was assessed by endovaginal …

EFSUMB Guidelines 2011: Comment on Emergent Indications and Visions

2012

The focus of this article is the emergent and potential indications of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). Emergent applications of CEUS techniques include extravascular and intracavitary contrast-enhanced ultrasound, quantitative assessment of microvascular circulation for tumor response assessment, and tumor characterization using dynamic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (DCE-US). Potential indications for microbubble agents include novel molecular imaging and drug and gene delivery techniques, which have been successfully tested in animal models.
