The electrofunctional investigations in the diagnosis of orbital diseases

1983

The importance of electrofunctional examinations (electroretinography, electro-oculography and visual evoked potentials) in orbital diseases is emphasized. Although such tests cannot give the same support to the clinical diagnosis as ultrasonography or CT scanning, they do give information about the functional state of the various orbital components. Visual evoked potentials can monitor the functionality of the optic nerve during and after trauma or compressive orbital diseases; electroretinography shows retinal changes secondary to traumatic or vascular orbital diseases, while electro-oculography allows to record extraocular muscle dysfunction.

Double nail of the second toe: A case report with sonographic and radiological correlation

2021

Double toenail is a rare abnormality that usually affects the fifth toe. It is considered as an inherited condition that may represent an incomplete form of polydactyly. Underlying bone abnormalities should be ruled out. We present a case of a double toenail of the second toe, a location that has not previously been described, with underlying bone involvement noted on ultrasound and plain films.

Advancing frontiers in rheumatic and musculoskeletal imaging.

2021

AbstractIn recent years, technological improvements allowed imaging modalities to become increasingly essential in achieving early and precise diagnoses in the field of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). To date, imaging examinations are routinely used in all steps of diagnostic and therapeutic care pathways of patients affected by RMDs. The articles published in this Article Collection clearly show the efforts of researchers to find innovative applications of musculoskeletal imaging in clinical practice and to face the crucial challenges that remain in the interpretation and quality control of images. Highly performing diagnostic technologies are currently available to early di…

Detection of liver metastases in cancer patients with geographic fatty infiltration of the liver: the added value of contrast-enhanced sonography

2017

Purpose The aim of this study is to assess the role of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) in the detection of liver metastases in cancer patients with geographic liver fatty deposition on greyscale ultrasonography (US). Methods Thirty-seven consecutive cancer patients (24 women and 13 men; age, 33 to 80 years; mean, 58.1 years) with geographic liver fatty deposition, but without any detectable focal liver lesion on greyscale US, underwent sulphur hexafluoride-enhanced US. Two readers reported by consensus the presence, size, and location of any detected lesion. All patients underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as a confirmatory study. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negat…

Diagnostic accuracy of Doppler sonography and magnetic resonance venography for the assessmentv of impaired outflow from the internal jugular vein in…

2015

Objectives: This prospective study was aimed at evaluation of diagnostic value of Doppler sonography and magnetic resonance (MR) venography in the internal jugular vein territory. Material and methods: There were assessed 126 patients (252 internal jugular veins). The patients were initially diagnosed using Doppler sonography and MR venography, and then catheter venography of the veins was performed. For the purpose of this study catheter venography was regarded the reference test. We interpreted sonographic findings in the context of criteria proposed by Zamboni and criteria by International Society for Neurovascular Disease (ISNVD). We applied MR protocols aimed at flow assessment in the …

New frontiers in liver ultrasound: From mono to multi parametricity

2021

Modern liver ultrasonography (US) has become a "one-stop shop " able to provide not only anatomic and morphologic but also functional information about vascularity, stiffness and other various liver tissue properties. Modern US techniques allow a quantitative assessment of various liver diseases. US scanning is no more limited to the visualized plane, but three-dimensional, volumetric acquisition and consequent post-processing are also possible. Further, US scan can be consistently merged and visualized in real time with Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging examinations. Effective and safe microbubble-based contrast agents allow a real time, dynamic study of contrast kinetic f…

Endometrial receptivity: evaluation with ultrasound.

2013

An adequate endometrial receptivity is a crucial factor for embryo implantation. We describe endometrial morphology (endometrial appearance or pattern, endometrial thickness, volume, and delimitation), based on the concepts and possibilities of the new ultrasound modalities (3-dimensional/4-dimensional ultrasound, automatic volume calculation, virtual organ computer-aided analysis, tomographic ultrasound image, inverse mode, and 3-dimensional Doppler angiography) as markers of endometrial receptivity.

Diagnosis of Tinnitus: Neurological Examination

2011

1. There is an urgent need for a set of assessment methods to be agreed upon and utilized by the international tinnitus research community. 2. Neurological examination of tinnitus patients is essential to achieve a good diagnostic approach to the different forms of objective and subjective tinnitus. 3. This chapter summarizes the neurological examination in tinnitus, including the protocol used in the authors’ tinnitus clinic, which is based on the consensus of the Tinnitus Research Initiative (TRI).
