Quantitative Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

2020

AbstractUltrasound (US) imaging plays a crucial role in the assessment of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. Several quantitative tools are offered by US systems and add information to conventional US imaging. This article reviews the quantitative US imaging tools currently available in MSK radiology, specifically focusing on the evaluation of elasticity with shear-wave elastography, perfusion with contrast-enhanced US and noncontrast superb microvascular imaging, and bone and muscle mass with quantitative US methods. Some of them are well established and already of clinical value, such as elasticity and contrast-enhanced perfusion assessment in muscles and tendons. MSK radiologists should be…

Diagnosis of Endometrial Carcinoma: Predictive Value of Transvaginal Color Doppler

1995

The objective of this study was to determine whether transvaginal ultrasound plus color Doppler flow improve the ability to diagnose endometrial carcinoma and allow better discrimination between benign and malignant endometrial lesions. One hundred thirty women with abnormal uterine bleeding were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler before fractional dilatation and curettage (D&C). The endometrial line thickness and endometrial characteristics were evaluated by endosonography. The resistive and pulsatile indices of the uterine arteries and of the endometrium were evaluated with transvaginal color Doppler. Following D&C and tissue diagnosis, women were divided into two groups, 62 with a…

Hysteroscopy and treatment of uterine polyps.

2015

This article summarizes and analyzes the salient topics on the diagnosis and management of endometrial polyps, focusing on the role of the hysteroscopy. Noninvasive investigations such as transvaginal ultrasonography, with or without the use of three-dimensional ultrasonography (3D US) and contrast techniques, remain the mainstay of first-line investigation. Hysteroscopic resection represents the gold standard minimally invasive treatment for endometrial polyps. It is the most effective management and allows histologic assessment, whereas blind biopsy or curettage have low diagnostic accuracy and should not be performed.

Three-dimensional hysterosonography for the study of endometrial tumors: comparison with conventional transvaginal sonography, hysterosalpingography,…

1997

We studied endometrial thickness and homogeneity in 36 patients with postmenopausal bleeding using three-dimensional ultrasound following distention of the uterine cavity with a sterile saline solution (3D-SHSG). Results with 3D-SHSG were compared with findings using transvaginal sonography, transvaginal sonohysterography, transvaginal color Doppler, and hysteroscopy. Sixteen patients (including three on tamoxifen) were undergoing hormone therapy at the time when they were studied. Visualization of the uterine cavity and of endometrial thickness was better with 3D-SHSG than with any of the other ultrasound techniques. The results with 3D-SHSG corresponded to the findings observed with hyste…

Ovarian cysts in newborns.

2001

Before the introduction of ultrasonography (US), ovarian cysts in newborns were thought to be rare. With the extended use of real-time US, prenatal detection has increased. There is still considerable controversy regarding the best treatment of these neonatal findings. A total of 27 instances in 24 consecutive newborns of antenatally-diagnosed ovarian cysts were reviewed for US data, management, and outcome to assess the ante- and postnatal evolution of the cyst and establish appropriate therapy. The cysts detected during pregnancy were studied by repeated postnatal US studies. In 10 children (2 with bilateral cysts) the cyst evolved spontaneously toward regression. Fourteen patients were o…

Dilation of the ductus venosus by stent implantation increases placental blood perfusion in fetal sheep.

2006

The reduction of resistance to flow in the ductus venous (DV) and a decrease of blood supply to the liver serve for the survival of the fetus during hypoxia. The present study investigated the influence of the increased diameter of the DV on placental blood perfusion. In 15 ewes with twin pregnancies at gestational ages of 117 +/- 4 days, a stent (4 or 5 mm) was placed into the DV of 1 twin (DV(stent) group) under ultrasound guidance. Blood flow rates in the umbilical vein (UV) and DV of both fetuses were measured using Doppler ultrasound. Eight pairs of twin fetuses were included for the final analysis. The dilatation of the DV increased the blood flow volume rate passed through the DV from …

Ultrasound-induced blood clot dissolution without a thrombolytic drug is more effective with lower frequencies.

2004

Background and Purpose: Therapeutic ultrasound as stand-alone therapy or in combination with rt-PA has proven to be an effective measure for recanalisation of acute vessel occlusion in different in vitro and in vivo studies. Uncertainty still exists concerning the optimal frequency and intensity with regard to the thrombolytic efficacy of ultrasound. The purpose of this study was a direct comparison of different ultrasound frequencies, when otherwise using identical measurement settings and parameters. Methods: Ultrasound-induced dissolution of fresh human blood clots was studied in a flow system using low-frequency continuous wave ultrasound of 20, 40 …

Post‐COVID ‐19 Liver Injury: Comprehensive Imaging With Multiparametric Ultrasound

2021

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to define patterns of liver injury after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection using multiparametric ultrasound (mpUS) in a variable patient population with differing severities of COVID-19. METHODS: Ninety patients were enrolled into the study: 56 had SARS-CoV-2 3-9 months prior to enrolment; 34 served as a clinically healthy control group. All patients underwent an mpUS evaluation of the liver (elastography, dispersion and attenuation imaging). Seventy-six patients had abdominal magnetic resonance (MR) and noncontrast enhanced thoracic computed tomography (CT) scans performed at the same day. All patients were screened for bioc…

Temporomandibular joint arthrocentesis guided by ultrasonography: An anatomical study

2021

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthrocentesis is a common procedure in maxillofacial surgery departments for the treatment of TMJ dysfunction. The use of ultrasonography in this area is rare, and in the vast majority of cases only as a diagnostic, and non-therapeutic use. Through this study we propose the equipment and ultrasound parameters necessary to obtain detailed and practical images when using ultrasonography as a therapeutic guide in arthrocentesis of TMJ. In addition, we provide data regarding the placement and working angulations of both the ultrasound probe and the needle that are ideal for facilitating image-guided puncture. It is a simple technique, with a relatively short l…
