Leadership for social justice? : exploring training and support needs of Indian school principals

2017

School Leadership is a fairly unexplored area within the education discourse, especially in developing countries like India. The purpose of this research study is to identify the training and support needs of Indian school principals, working with students from marginalized, under-resourced communities. This purpose is met by attaining a holistic understanding of a school leader’s perceptions about his/her role and responsibilities, challenges, underlying mindsets and opportunities. For the study, five school principals were interviewed and the data analysis followed a qualitative, content analysis methodology. The principals have different personal backgrounds, cities, years of experience …

Introduction to the special issue on just food system transition : Tackling inequalities for sustainability

2023

This special issue builds understanding of just transitions by looking at specific dynamics in food system transitions. The articles in the special issue apply a multi-dimensional understanding of justice, which stress that in addition to distributional matters, also recognition and procedural justice require attention in transitions. The current injustices in the food system emphasize the interrelatedness of these dimensions. The special issue includes eight articles that scrutinize food system transition in various contexts from Finland to Brazil and from farm-level decision-making to the UN food system summit. The papers demonstrate the focality of recognition justice for interpreting co…

Looking for Intercultural Competences in language teacher education in Australia and Finland

2020

Teacher education is crucial to supporting equitable educational outcomes and social justice in schools. In a global context of increasingly mobile and diversified school populations, pre-service teachers, and their students, need new capacities and strategies to counter racism and ethnocentric attitudes which appear to emerge in classrooms in many national contexts (Welch, 2016; Dervin, 2016). Intercultural competence has been discussed in many iterations in teacher education internationally for a number of decades. There have been many individual initiatives to devise programs in teacher education to impact pre-service teacher competences (for example, Dervin & Dirba, 2006; Jokikokko, 200…

Outsiders Reflecting on Invisible Institutional Gender Norms

2022

In higher education (HE), especially in countries viewed as socially equal, often there are embedded normative institutional practices. This raises two intersecting issues: (1) how the perception of a Nordic social justice national ideology and policies may not translate into a reality for all and (2) how homogeneous non-colonial countries could contain invisible threads of gendered institutional coloniality which affect women and non-local/transnational women to a greater degree. Our study is unique as the research context is Finland, a Nordic socially equal country. The reality is that there is embedded inequity in institutionalized normative practices. The study employed a multi-perspect…

New Materialist Explorations into Language Education

2023

This open access book analyzes language education through a socio-material framework. The authors revisit their position as researchers by decentering themselves and humans in general from the main focus of research activities and giving way to the materialities that are agentive but often overlooked parts of our research contexts and processes. Through this critical posthumanist realism, they are able to engage in research that sees society as an ethical interrelationship between humans and the material world and explore the socio-materialities of language education from the perspectives of material agency, spatial and embodied materiality, and human and non-human assemblages. Each chapter…

Examining how global citizenship education is prefigured in the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence

2021

This study uses the Aristotelian notion of phronesis as a critical lens for examining how global citizenship education is prefigured in the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence. Based on a content analysis of key curriculum documentation, the findings outline the way in which techne and episteme with their associated ways of knowing and acting dominate the curriculum. Nevertheless, the hints of phronesis indicate the potential for developing a more critical form of global citizenship education that prefigures praxis that wisely pursues that which is good for humankind and individual flourishing. This article contributes to the notion of ‘planetary phronesis’ as a critical concept for the furt…
