Experiences of people with memory disorders and their spouse carers on influencing formal care: “They ask my wife questions that they should ask me”
2021
Background People with memory disorders often need care and help from family carers and health and social care providers. Due to the deterioration of cognitive capacity and language skills, they may be unable to convey their thoughts and care preferences to other people. As a result, their agency may become restricted. We investigated the descriptions provided by people with memory disorders and spousal carers of their influence on care in encounters with formal care providers. Methods Qualitative thematic analysis was used to identify, analyze, and report themes that describe encounters with professionals in different social or healthcare environments. In-depth interview data were gathered…

Lievää Alzheimerin tautia sairastavien henkilöiden ja heidän omaishoitajiensa sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluiden käyttö ja siihen yhteydessä olevat teki…
2010
Alzheimerin tauti on yleisin dementiaa aiheuttava sairaus. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää li…
Concluding remarks : a need for women-specific services
2021
The empirical findings presented in this book convincingly show that despite differences between the service systems and welfare state models in Finland, Canada, Israel, Slovenia, Spain and the UK, the difficulties that women face with the welfare service system and in their encounters with it have striking similarities. Women find it difficult to know how to apply for and receive the services, social support and protection they need to cope in the vulnerable situations they struggle with in their daily lives. They describe service systems as complex, fragmented and complicated, with no clear logic and rules about how to work with them. For these women, the systems look like ‘a jungle with …

Finnish welfare service system from the standpoint of women in vulnerable life situations
2020
In this chapter, the authors analyse how the Finnish welfare service system, as it consists of different institutions and professionals, meets or fails to meet the needs of women in varying vulnerable life situations. The participants are women with severe substance abuse problems, women sentenced for committing a crime and poor lone mothers living on basic social benefits. The findings show that women’s experiences of encounters with welfare professionals as well as their access to and use of the services share a number of characteristics. They described several barriers and problems related to the complexity of the service system. These included receiving only limited support for basic ne…
“They're always in a hurry” : Older people's perceptions of access and recognition in health and social care services
2019
The article examines older people's perceptions of quality of life from the perspective of access and use of health and social care services. The data include focus group discussions with older people living alone. The data were analysed using thematic analysis focusing on the older people's collective views on health and social care services as supportive or restrictive factors for their quality of life. Two central themes were present in all the focus group discussions: the importance of accessing services and information regarding the services, and need for recognition within the services/by the professionals. Both themes were connected to the older people's desire to maintain autonomy i…

Yksin asumisen yhteys sosiaali- ja terveyspalveluiden käyttöön ja yksinäisyyteen lonkkamurtumasta toipuvilla ikääntyneillä ihmisillä
2014
Läntisissä teollistuneissa maissa on asetettu tavoitteeksi, että ikääntyneillä ihmisillä on mahdollisuus asua kotonaan tai kodinomaisissa olosuhteissa mahdollisimman pitkään. Suomessa omassa asunnossaan asuu noin 95 prosenttia 65 vuotta täyttäneistä. Kotona asuvista ikääntyneistä ihmisistä monet tarvitsevat kotihoidon apua päivittäisissä toiminnoissaan. Eniten apua tarvitsevat yksin asuvat, huonokuntoiset ikääntyneet, joilla on heikko sosiaalinen tukiverkosto. Todennäköisyyttä kotihoidon palvelujen käyttöön lisäävät tuki- ja liikuntaelinsairaudet ja erityisesti lonkkamurtumapotilailla palvelujen tarvetta kotona saattaa lisätä kaatumisen pelon ja huonon tasapainon hallinnan seurauksena synty…
