Mobile Phone Theft, Resale, and Violence in Dar es Salaam
2021
In Africa’s towns and cities more than those on any other continent, governments seem unable to ensure security for their citizens. The majority of urban residents find themselves ‘entangled within power dynamics that position them at the city’s margins, literally and figuratively’ (Myers 2011) . Although urban informality is defined by its ‘illegality’ from the perspective of regulatory elites (Potts 2007) , some informal activities are viewed as predatory or harmful by the urban residents who must deal with them in their everyday lives. These include bribery by officials and service providers, dispossession of inheritance by relatives, brokerage fraud, extortion by local government offici…
Associations of socioeconomic position and self-rated physical fitness in Finnish population
2012
Several health indicators establish that those in higher socioeconomic position (SEP) have longer and healthier lives. Health behaviour, such as physical activity (PA), is an important explaining factor for health inequalities. Physical fitness as predictor of morbidity and mortality emphasizes the health-enhancing character of PA, while taking into account also other health-influencing factors such as obesity, smoking, chronic diseases and genetic variability. However, physical fitness is a rarely used measure in population level studies. The association of SEP and physical fitness is hardly studied at all. The aim of this thesis is to study the socioeconomic differences in self-rated phys…
Hoivaköyhyys kasvattaa vanhuusiän eriarvoisuutta
2022
2018
Hynynen, T. 2018. Nuorten koettu terveys, sosioekonominen asema ja sosioekonomiset terveyserot. WHO-Koululaistutkimuksen tuloksia.

Examining Power and Inequality through Informality in Urban Africa
2021
As increasing numbers of Africans live in cities, their strategies for living and surviving challenge prevailing theories and models of urban development. Scholars of poverty and development have given more attention to rural areas than to urban ones, yet urban lifeways need more study because people’s material lives in the city differ significantly from those in rural areas. Urban residents are exposed to more ethnic, religious, and socio-economic diversity than rural residents (Jha et al. 2005) . Urban areas are also highly monetized, and the lives of especially the poorest residents are determined almost entirely by market forces. Money thus becomes the focus of city dwellers’ attention:…
Living standards and changing expectations : investigating domestic necessity and environmental sustainability in an affluent society
2017
This study explores how the problematic relations of rising living standards and environmental sustainability may be better understood by investigating domestic necessity and daily going-on. These key subjects are looked at from two angles and through two kinds of research material: statistics and quantitative survey material constituting of a nationally representative longitudinal dataset of Finnish people (n=2,417 in 1999, n=3,574 in 2004, n=1,202 in 2009), and in-depth interviews (n=14) of a particular socio-economic group, the well-to-do who have higher-than average income and higher education, and those in their prime working age (30–45 years-old). The survey material provides a tempor…
Race, Environment, and Crisis : Hurricane Camille and the Politics of Southern Segregation
2022
In August 1969 Hurricane Camille hit the Mississippi coast. We argue that the disaster caused by the Hurricane was an outcome of the entanglement between human and non-human agents. As a non-human agent, Hurricane Camille thrust the prevailing socio-economic situation in the segregationist South into the spotlight, with all its political and cultural ramifications – much to the annoyance of the local political elite that had long sought to isolate southern politics from civil rights and the desegregation agenda. Consequently, it (re)invigorated and furnished the civil rights movement and the politics defining that era with new arguments and approaches that would have been impossible to dev…
Impact of Cardiorespiratory Fitness on Survival in Men with Low Socioeconomic Status
2020
Abstract Aims Although both low socioeconomic status (SES) and poor cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) are associated with increased chronic disease and heightened mortality, it remains unclear whether moderate-to-high levels of CRF are associated with survival benefits in low SES populations. This study evaluated the hypothesis that SES and CRF predict all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality and that moderate-to-high levels of CRF may attenuate the association between low SES and increased mortality. Methods This study included 2368 men, who were followed in the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Study cohort. CRF was directly measured by peak oxygen uptake during progressive exe…
Suomalaisten suuryritysten vuosina 1851-1925 syntyneiden johtajien elinikä
2012
Tässä työssä tarkastellaan suomalaisten teollisuusyritysten johtajien kuolleisuutta. Tarkoituksena on selvittää sosioekonomisia kuolleisuuseroja 1900-luvun alusta alkaen vertailemalla johtajien kohorttikuolleisuutta miesten yleiseen kohorttikuolleisuuteen vastaavana aikana.
