Background: Evidence suggests that early life stress (ELS) may extend its effect into adulthood and predispose an individual to adverse health outcomes. We investigated whether wartime parental separation, an indicator of severe ELS, would be associated with frailty in old age. Methods: Of the 972 participants belonging to the present sub-study of the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, 117 (12. 0%) had been evacuated abroad unaccompanied by their parents in childhood during World War II. This study is based upon in-depth interviews with ten Finnish war children who were evacuated to Sweden during the Second World War (1939 -1944) and who did not return permanently to Finland after the war. This interpretative and qualitative interview study of war children seems to be the only one of its kind. The interviews were carried out in 2007 in Stockholm. At the time of the evacuation nine of the children were between two and five years of age and one was seven years old. At the time of the interviews they were approaching their seventieth birthday. Tutkielmani käsittelee traumaattisten kokemusten ilmenemistä päähenkilössä ja hänen käyttäytymisessään Heikki Hietamiehen romaanissa Äideistä parhain. Tutkin myös, millä tavoin trauma ilmenee itse romaanin kerronnassa; miten trauma siis muuntuu kirjallisuuden kieleksi. Päädyin aiheeseen, koska Hietamiehen romaanista ei ole tehty vastaavaa traumafiktioon liittyvää tutkimusta. Sotalasten traumaattisista kokemuksista ylipäätään on jonkin verran tehty tieteellisiä tutkimuksia ja vuosikymmenten saatossa myös sotalasten omaelämäkerrat ovat nousseet yhä enemmän esille. Sotalapsi-termin ovat ottaneet käyttöön entiset sotalapset, jotka muistelivat lapsuuttaan sotalapsena ensimmäisen maailman sodan aikana. Sotalapsi-termiä on käytetty laajasti. Tutkimuksessani tarkoitan sotalapsilla lapsia, jotka on siirretty turvaan sodan jaloista. Suomesta lähti Ruotsiin lähti kokonaisarvion mukaan talvi- ja jatkosodan aikana 70 000-80 000 suomalaislasta. Samanlaisia lastensiirtoja oli tehty eri puolilla Eurooppaa. Suomesta lähetettyjen sotalasten määrä oli maailman suurin suhteutettuna Suomen väkilukuun. Selvitän pro gradu –tutkimuksessani Ruotsissa sotalapsena olleiden kolmen suomalaisen elämäntarinoita. Tarkastelutapani on elämäkerrallinen. Tutkimukseni kohdistuu vuosie…
