Finnish Military Officer Identities and Micro-Political Resistance
2021
Drawing on the concept of micro-political resistance, this article presents an empirical analysis of how officers of the Finnish Defence Forces challenge, resist, and reinforce the collective military identities constructed within the prevailing organizational discourses. An analysis of 108 military officers’ writings and 12 interviews showed that while the traditional masculine ideal still exists, a vast variety of valuations are related to new work. The notion of the new ideal worker includes attributes, such as empathy, emotional …
Upseerinaisten sukupuolen tekemisen tavat
2018
Armeija on historiallisesti ja globaalisti sukupuolittunut instituutio ja sotiluus on perinteisesti ollut miesten hallussa. Sielläkin, missä sotilaana toimiminen on mahdollista naisille, sotilaan normi on edelleen mies. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan, millaisia sukupuolen tekemisen tapoja Suomen Puolustusvoimissa työskentelevät upseerinaiset ovat omaksuneet sopeutuakseen sotilasyhteisöön. Artikkeli avaa, miten upseerinaiset tekevät sukupuolta sotilaskontekstissa ja miten nämä sukupuolen tekemisen tavat vaikuttavat muussa elämässä. Aineisto koostuu yhdeksän upseerinaisen haastattelusta, joiden pohjalta hahmottuu neljänlaisia sukupuolen tekemisen tapoja: sukupuolen tekeminen rakentamalla sukupuol…
