Warming trends in Patagonian subantartic forest

2019

Abstract The forests in the Aysen region (ca. 43–49 °S, Chile) have a high degree of wilderness and cover more than 4.8 million hectares, making it one of the largest areas of subantarctic forest in the Southern Hemisphere. The impact of global warming on this region is poorly documented. The main objective of this work was to analyze the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), land surface temperature (LST) and precipitation over Aysen forests in the context of ongoing global warming. We used average monthly images of LST and NDVI derived from the MODIS sensor covering the period 2001–2016 and precipitation from gridded datasets. The Aysen region was divided into three nested spatia…

Assay of hepatitis B virus DNA by polymerase chain reaction and its relationship to Pre-S- and S-encoded viral surface antigens

1991

The polymerase chain reaction was evaluated as a diagnostic tool in 72 chronic hepatitis B virus carriers. Hepatitis B virus DNA was detectable in the serum of HBsAg—positive virus carriers using aliquots as small as 100 al. The detection limit for cloned hepatitis B virus DNA was 100 ag. Primer pairs for different regions of the HBV genome resulted in different sensitivity. Detection of the amplified hepatitis B virus DNA by Southern blotting and subsequent scintillation counting or densitometry allowed a semiquantitative assay. Using several primer pairs in parallel for optimal detection, all HBeAg-positive HBsAg carriers, 80% of HBe antibody—positive symptomatic HBsAg carriers and 57% of…

Molecular hybridization techniques in current diagnosis of chronic hepatitis B in childhood.

1992

Following the cloning and sequencing of the hepatitis B virus genome, molecular hybridization techniques have been established to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in serum and liver tissue. Analyses can be performed by dot blot, Southern blot and in situ hybridization. HBV DNA is regarded to be the most sensitive marker of viral replication and infectivity which was previously related to the presence of hepatitis B e antigen in serum and hepatitis B core antigen in liver cells. In liver tissue different molecular patterns can be recognized as free viral DNA and integrated sequences. Furthermore, introduction of the polymerase chain reaction allows the detection of very small amounts of vi…

Gypsy homologous sequences in Drosophila subobscura (gypsyDS).

1993

Characterization of sequences homologous to the Drosophila melanogaster gypsy transposable element was carried out in Drosophila subobscura (gypsyDS). They were found to be widely distributed among natural populations of this species. From Southern blot and in situ analyses, these sequences appear to be mobile in this species. GypsyDS sequences are located in both euchromatic and heterochromatic regions. A complete gypsyDS sequence was isolated from a D. subobscura genomic library, and a 1.3-kb fragment which aligns with the ORF2 of the D. melanogaster gypsy element was sequenced. Comparisons of this sequence in three species (D. subobscura, D. melanogaster, and D. virilis) indicate that th…

“A Perfect Heroine in Foreign Travel.” Female Mobile Identities and Southern Italy in the 19th Century Non-feminist Periodical Press

2016

This essay focuses on the inteaction between the publication of female travel writing abouth the South Of Italy in non -feminist 19th century British periodicaldìs and the circulation of a transgressive model of femininity centred on the concepts of mobility, vitality and visibility. the choice of Southern Italy, and anti-tourist destination that since the era of the Grand Tour had been considered dangerous for men, let alone for women, magnifies female heroic attitudes and contaminates female conventional domestic purity enhancing the concept of an unfixed female identity. The publications of a travelogue, a mostly non fictional genre, on an innovative and reactive medium, was a manifest a…

Plant surfaces of vegetable crops mediate interactions between chemical footprints of true bugs and their egg parasitoids.

2009

During the host location process, egg parasitoids can eavesdrop on chemical cues released from immature and adult hosts. These indirect host-related cues are highly detectable, but of low reliability because they lead egg parasitoid females to an area where oviposition is likely to occur rather then providing wasps with direct information on the presence of eggs and their location. In the host-parasitoid associations between true bugs and their scelionid egg parasitoids, female wasps perceive the chemical residues left by host adults walking on substrates as contact kairomones, displaying a characteristic arrestment posture. In this study, we demonstrated that epicuticular waxes of leaves o…

Genetic rearrangement of the atzAB atrazine-degrading gene cassette from pADP1::Tn5 to the chromosome of Variovorax sp. MD1 and MD2

2007

International audience; We report the characterization of the rearrangement phenomena responsible for the movement of the atrazine-degrading atzA and B genes from pADP1::Tn5 to the chromosome of Variovorax sp. MD1 and MD2. Long PCRs and Southern blot analyses revealed that the two genes forming a gene cassette moved in a unique rearrangement event. It also revealed that the boundaries of the plasmid sequence inserted in the chromosome correspond to IS1071or to sequences close to IS1071. It suggests that this genetic rearrangement could result from the transposition of the composite transposon delimited by IS1071 insertion sequences and containing atzA and atzB genes. In addition, for MD1 an…

Soil erosion susceptibility assessment and validation using a geostatistical multivariate approach: a test in southern Sicily

2008

A certain number of studies have been carried out in recent years that aim at developing and applying a model capable of assessing water erosion of soil. Some of these have tried to quantitatively evaluate the volumes of soil loss, while others have focused their efforts on the recognition of the areas most prone to water erosion processes. This article presents the results of a research whose objective was that of evaluating water erosion susceptibility in a Sicilian watershed: the Naro river basin. A geomorphological study was carried out to recognize the water erosion landforms and define a set of parameters expressing both the intensity of hydraulic forces and the resistance of rocks/so…

Methodological approach for evaluating the geo-exchange potential: VIGOR Project

2012

In the framework of VIGOR Project, a national project coordinated by the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources (CNR-IGG) and sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Development (MiSE), dedicated to the evaluation of geothermal potential in the regions of the Convergence Objective in Italy (Puglia, Calabria, Campania and Sicily), is expected to evaluate the ability of the territory to heat exchange with the ground for air conditioning of buildings. To identify the conditions for the development of low enthalpy geothermal systems collected and organized on a regional scale geological and stratigraphic data useful for the preparation of a specific thematic mapping, able to represent in a …
