Towards human exploration of space: the THESEUS review series on cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal research priorities

International audience; The THESEUS project (Towards Human Exploration of Space: aEUropean Strategy) was initiated within the seventh FrameworkProgramme by the European Commission. This project aimed toprovide a cross-cutting, life science-based roadmap for Europe’sstrategy towards human exploration of space, especially for deepspace missions and its relevance to applications on Earth. Toaddress these challenges, relevance of space research on thecardiovascular system, the lungs and kidneys, was discussed in anexpert group and its principal conclusions will be presented in thisarticle.

Social, occupational and cultural adaptation in Antarctica

International audience; Objectives & Method: This study investigated psychological, social, occupational and cultural variables in adaptation to a one-year wintering in Antarctica with 13 international participants. Results & Conclusion: These psychosocial issues have important implications for pre-mission selection and training, monitoring and support of crews during the mission and post-mission readaptation highlighting the role of psychologists in stressful and extreme situations.

Mitigation of the impact of stellar activity on observations of transiting planets

La tesi si concentra sulla quantificazione dell'impatto dell'attività stellare sulle osservazioni dei pianeti in transito e sull'identificazione di una metodologia per correggere questi effetti. In particolare, viene approfondito l'effetto delle macchie stellari, sia non occultate che occulte. La presenza di macchie sul disco stellare visibile può distorcere la curva della luce di transito primaria in modo dipendente dalla lunghezza d'onda, mimando la presenza di un'atmosfera. Synchrotron x-ray transmission measurements and modeling of filters investigated for Athena

International audience; Advanced Telescope for High-Energy Astrophysics is a large-class astrophysics space mission selected by the European Space Agency to study the theme "Hot and Energetic Universe." The mission essentially consists of a large effective area x-ray telescope and two detectors: the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) and the Wide Field Imager (WFI). Both instruments require filters to shield from out-of-band radiation while providing high transparency to x-rays.
