Embryo incubation and selection in a time-lapse monitoring system improves pregnancy outcome compared with a standard incubator: a retrospective coho…

2012

Objective To quantify the effect on reproductive outcome of culturing and selecting embryos using a novel time-lapse monitoring system (TMS). Design Retrospective observational cohort study. Setting University-affiliated private center. Patient(s) Donation and autologous intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles from ten IVF clinics using similar procedures, cultured in TMS (n = 1,390) or in a standard incubator (SI; n=5,915). Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Clinical pregnancy rate confirmed by ultrasound in week 7. Result(s) A logistic regression analysis, which included all significant confounding factors, was used to evaluate the effect of culturing and selecting embry…

Oocyte donation outcome after oncological treatment in cancer survivors.

2012

Objective To study reproductive outcome in patients cured of cancer who required oocyte donation (OD) owing to iatrogenic ovarian dysfunction. Design Multicenter, unmatched, retrospective cohorts study. Setting Private, university-affiliated group of clinics. Patient(s) Women treated and cured of cancer (n = 142) who underwent 333 cycles of OD (exposed group) and women without a previous cancer diagnosis (n = 17,844) who underwent 29,778 cycles of OD (unexposed cohort) between January 2000 and January 2012. Intervention(s) Retrospective chart review. Main Outcome Measure(s) Pregnancy, implantation, miscarriage, and ongoing pregnancy rates. Result(s) There were no differences in terms of pre…

Heterogeneity in Cystic Echinococcosis Management Among Spanish Centers: Results from a National Survey

2020

The aim of the study was to evaluate the availability of different procedures, diagnostic tests, and treatments, as well as the procedures and techniques used in the management of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in Spain. This was a cross-sectional study performed from September to December 2018 in Spain. A survey directed to CE-treating clinicians was conducted to collect information regarding the center characteristics and the different protocols of management followed. Thirty-nine centers among 76 contacted centers participated in the survey, most of them belonging to the public health system and attending both adult and children. The median number of patients with CE attended during the last…

Prevalence of general binocular dysfunctions in a population of university students.

1997

Although some authors report that the prevalence of general binocular dysfunctions (nonstrabismic) for nonpresbyopes in the clinical population is greater than any condition except refractive error, limited research is available to support this statement. This clinical study determined the presence and clinical implications of these conditions in a population of university students with heavy near visual demands. From a group of second year students who were given a thorough eye examination, 65 students were selected. The criteria for selection were the absence of significant uncorrected refractive error, healthy eyes, and no strabismus or amblyopia.32.3% of the subjects showed general binoc…

Metformin modulates human leukocyte/endothelial cell interactions and proinflammatory cytokines in polycystic ovary syndrome patients

2015

Abstract Objective We aim to assess the effect of metformin treatment on metabolic parameters, endothelial function and inflammatory markers in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) subjects. Methods The study population consisted of 40 reproductive-age women with PCOS, who underwent treatment with metformin during a 12-week period, and their corresponding matched controls (n = 44). We evaluated endocrinological parameters, adhesion molecules (vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), intercellular cell adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) and E-selectin) and proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα)) in serum. In addition, interactions between human umbili…

Limited implantation success of direct-cleaved human zygotes: a time-lapse study.

2012

Objective To evaluate embryos with direct cleavage (≤5 hours) from two to three cells (DC2–3) and correlate this morphokinetic parameter to implantation and ongoing pregnancy. Design Clinical multicenter retrospective study. Setting Private in vitro fertilization (IVF) centers. Patient(s) From three clinics, a total of 979 treatments including 5,225 embryos using autologous or donated oocytes, of which 1,659 embryos were transferred. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) Clinical pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound in week 7. Result(s) Of the total embryo cohort, 715 (13.7%) underwent direct cleavage from two to three cells, 1,659 embryos were transferred to recipients, and 109 of the…

Synergism between exposure to mercury and use of iodine supplements on thyroid hormones in pregnant women

2015

Objective: To evaluate the association between mercury exposure and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels during pregnancy as well as to explore if there is any synergic action between mercury and intake of iodine from different sources. Methods: The study population was 1407 pregnant women participating in the Spanish INMA birth cohort study. Total mercury concentrations were analyzed in cord blood. Thyroid hormones (THs) were measured in serum samples collected at 13.2 +/- 1.5 weeks of gestation. The association between mercury and TH levels was evaluated with multivariate linear regression models. Effect modification caused by iod…

Antral follicle count (AFC) can be used in the prediction of ovarian response but cannot predict the oocyte/embryo quality or the in vitro fertilizat…

2007

To verify whether the antral follicle count (AFC) could predict ovarian response, oocyte/embryo quality, and IVF outcome.Prospective study.Instituto Universitario-Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. One thousand seventy-four donors and 975 oocyte recipient cycles.Controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH), endometrial preparation, IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ET.COH and oocyte/embryo quality parameters and IVF outcome. We observed lower E(2) levels and fewer mature retrieved oocyte numbers among donors who showed an AFC that was10. These donors also showed significantly higher cancellation and no-donation rates; poor and/or insufficient response was the principal ca…

Associations of maternal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes

2015

Objective To investigate the association of maternal circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting Four geographical areas of Spain, 2003–2008. Population Of 2382 mother–child pairs participating in the INfancia y Medio Ambiente (INMA) Project. Methods Maternal circulating 25(OH)D3 concentration was measured in pregnancy (mean [SD] 13.5 [2.2] weeks of gestation). We tested associations of maternal 25(OH)D3 concentration with pregnancy and birth outcomes. Main outcome measures Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preterm delivery, caesarean section, fetal growth restriction (FGR) and small-for-gestational…
