The political attribution of values to Intangible Cultural Heritage: the consuetudinary courts
2021
2017
The film El color del camaleón (2017) by Andrés Lübbert, which has great cinematic and content merits, can be considered as an important part of Chilean films on memory and post-memory. I focus on its contribution to Chilean memory and the reconstruction of the truth through the unveiling, in particular, of cruel methods of forced recruitment used by the dictatorship’s secret services. They were used as a further tool to instill terror in society, and as a way of submission and control of the population.

Between post-colonial and global studies: mobility, government and coexistence in the territories of the Spanish Monarchy in the modern age
2020
After overcoming a predominantly Eurocentric vision, historiography of the late 20th century ventured further into considering the development of dynamics on a planetary scale, embracing the innovative instances and methodological suggestions of Post-Colonial studies, as well as those of World and Global Studies. Whether one accepts the paradigm of “globalisation” or rejects it, like for example, among others, Frederick Cooper – who considers it an empty conceptual shell, devoid of uniformity – it is a matter of fact that social sciences, and history among them, were influenced by it in their heuristic approach at understanding phenomena. In this perspective, and within a dialectic approach…
Why People Born During World War II are Healthier
2017
War leads civilians to suffer. This can take extreme forms, such as during periods of intense violence or famines. But also outside of such episodes, civilians’ lives during wars can be harsh, as they suffer from poorer nutritional situations, stress, recessions, and sub optimally functioning health care systems. The more extreme types of suffering are proven to lead to a worse health among those prenatally exposed to them. But long-run effects of prenatal exposure to the latter circumstances have thus far largely been unexplored, even though in many wars more pregnant women are exposed to these “everyday” circumstances than to the extreme circumstances. We study the general, population-wid…
Market trends in Spanish higher education
1997
Abstract Higher education in Spain broke away from its close dependency on the State in the last decade. In this paper we analyze the steps undertaken by the Spanish higher education system which has allowed market influences to grow in recent years. We analyze the historical framework and legal changes which have facilitated market trends in higher education. We consider the influence of these market trends on the financial and organizational structure of universities. We conclude that, though the steps are still hesitant, market-like elements are increasingly affecting every aspect of higher education life.
1936. Frustrated Hopes: The Great Depression, the Second Republic and the Civil War
2020
The Great Depression was accompanied by the collapse of the monarchical regime and the establishment of a modern democracy with the Second Republic in April 1931. The new regime had to balance the importance of gaining domestic and international respectability (using orthodox fiscal and monetary policy) with efforts to shift towards a moderate protectionist policy, and enact land, labour and educational reforms. There were fierce confrontations from 1934 on, eventually culminating in a civil war in 1936. The consequences included a long-lasting impact on economic growth; autarky and interventionist policies; a huge loss of human capital; poverty and rising inequality; and a 40-year-long dic…
