Telepsychology and Self-help: The Treatment of Fear of Public Speaking

Abstract This work presents a self-help, Internet-based telepsychology program for the treatment of public speaking fears. The system is comprised of 3 parts: The assessment protocol gives the patient information about his or her problem (i.e., amount of interference it creates in his or her life, severity, degree of fear and avoidance). The system also includes a structured treatment protocol, organized into separate blocks, reflecting the patient’s progress. This ensures that the patient does not skip any steps in the treatment (something quite common in traditional self-help manuals), which provides more control over the process. The essay proposes an excursus through German-speaking culture between 1400 and 1650, aiming to highlight how the reading of 'signs',both artificial and natural, underwent substantial changes inthe perios under examination. In optimistic anthropological contexts, the reading is mainly the result of a widespread aspiration to knowledge and does not excude the free will of human beings. When a pessimistic conception dominates, the sign is the external manifestation of an ineluctable destiny.
Two Perspectives on the Communication Skills of Political Leaders

This study aimed to outline the current communication skills of political leaders. Media data, in total 5,697 items, were collected from four newspapers in Finland over a period of six months in 2008. The interview data consist of eight interviews with Finnish party leaders. All materials were analyzed by qualitative content analysis. Two kinds of perspectives are described: the media perspective by illustrating what kind of descriptions, evaluations and requirements for communication of political leaders are established in newspapers and the political leaders' perspective by reporting the experiences and evaluations of political leaders themselves. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan sitä, miten thainkielisten suomenoppijoiden (N=10) ensikielen tunnistaminen vaikuttaa Yleisten kielitutkintojen (YKI) suomen arvioijien (N=44) käsityksiin kielitaidosta ja millaisia käsityksiä arvioijilla on thainkielisten suullisesta kielitaidosta. Artikkelin aineisto liittyy Rikkinäistä suomea-hankkeeseen, jossa thainkieliset oli yksi tutkimukseen osallistuneesta ensikielen ryhmittymästä. Šī bakalaura darba mērķis bija atklāt, kāds ir iemesls, kāpēc epiteti, metaforas un hiperbolas tiek izmantotas TED prezentācijās, kas tālāk iedalās kādu epitetu un metaforu veidi tika izmantoti šajās prezentācijās, un atklāt, kad šie trīs specifiskie tēlainas valodas elementi tiek izmantoti. Izpētot šī pētījuma teorētisko daļu, kas sastāvēja no vairāku autoru sniegtajām definīcijām, tika secināts, ka šie trīs tēlainas valodas elementi publiskajās runās veic ievērojamu lomu, pievienojot tēlainību, vērš uzmanību un izplata informāciju. Aim: The aim of this article is to investigate the interdependence between adolescent and adult students’ anxiety and their foreign language speaking achievements. It has been proved that there is no correlation between adolescent learners’ anxiety and their speaking attainments in a foreign language as well as that there is a weak correlation between adult students’ anxiety and their speaking achievements.
 Method: The author of the study employed quantitative research. Data was collected from anxiety questionnaires completed by the students and from achievement sheets filled in by the English teacher based on five-minute speeches performed by adolescent and adult students.

Šī bakalaura darba tēma ir „Klasiskie retorikas līdzekļi iedarbīgā mūsdienu publiskā runā”. Veicot šo pētījumu, darba autore, pirmkārt, vēlas noskaidrot, vai tie retoriskie līdzekļi, kurus atklājuši tādi antīkie retorikas pētnieki kā Aristotelis, Cicerons un Kvintiliāns, joprojām ir aktuāli mūsdienās un, otrkārt, pievērst uzmanību šo instrumentu lietojuma biežumam pārliecinošā mūsdienu publiskā runā. Izmantotās pētījuma metodes ir apkopojoša analīze teorētiskajā daļā un diskursa kvalitatīva analīze empīriskajā daļā. Pētījuma rezultāti parāda, ka klasiskie retorikas līdzekļi joprojām ir piemērojami mūsdienu runām, un, lai pārliecinātu klausītājus, tie tiek bieži pielietoti mūsdienās.
