Stigma morphology inAylosterasubg.Mediolobivia(Cactaceae) and its importance for systematic investigation

The stigma of 31 taxa of Aylostera (Cactaceae) was studied using environmental scanning electron microscopy. Seven stigma types could be defined, based on the degree of fusion of the stigmatic lobes and, when these are completely separated (types I and II), their orientation. Four types (types IV, V, VI and VII) are present only in Aylostera subg. Mediolobivia, two of which (types IV and VII) are species-specific. Stigma morphology was found to be a good diagnostic character in Aylostera subg. Mediolobivia, allowing in some cases to distinguish species that had been confused previously. Assessing the use of the mitochondrial cox1 marker for use in DNA barcoding of red algae (Rhodophyta)

The red algae, a remarkably diverse group of organisms, are difficult to identify using morphology alone. Following the proposal to use the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) for DNA barcoding animals, we assessed the use of this, ne in the identification of red algae using 48 samples plus 31 sequences obtained from GenBank. The data set spanned six gene orders of red algae: the Bangiales, Ceramiales, Corallinales, Gigartinales, Gracilariales and Rhodymeniales. The results indicated that species could be discriminated. Abstract In clinical laboratories, isolation of Candida species is generally based on the culture of specimens on Sabouraud dextrose agar. This strategy does not allow species identification on primary culture and makes it difficult to detect mixed cultures. This work presents an updated dichotomous key to all snake species of Europe, based on morphological, morphometric and distributional characters. It gathers data from both the last dichotomous keys concerning European snake species and every following paper giving updates on taxonomic classification or the occurrence of new allochthonous species. Lajintuntemustaidot ovat tärkeä bio- ja ympäristötieteiden alojen ammattilaisten osaamisalue. Lajintuntemuksella on myös merkitys osana laajempaa luonnontuntemusta, sillä esimerkiksi ekosysteemien rakenteen ja toiminnan ymmärtäminen ilman lajintuntemusta olisi hankalaa. Lajintuntemustaitojen on todettu heikentyneen luonnontieteiden korkeakouluopiskelijoilla, minkä lisäksi lajintuntemuksen opiskelu korkeakouluissa on todettu yllättävän vaikeaksi.
