Direct excitation of the “dark”b3Πstate predicted by deperturbation analysis of theA1Σ+−b3Πcomplex in KCs

The diode-laser-induced fluorescence spectra $b {}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}=0}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{X}^{ 1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ originated from the rovibronic levels of the ``dark'' triplet $b {}^{3}{\ensuremath{\Pi}}_{\ensuremath{\Omega}=0}^{+}$ state of KCs dimers were recorded with a Fourier transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.03 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$. Term values of 30 rovibronic levels $({v}_{b0}^{*}\ensuremath{\in}[14,18];{J}^{\ensuremath{'}}\ensuremath{\in}[47,134])$ below the minimum of perturbing $A {}^{1}{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}^{+}$ state were determined with 0.003--0.01 cm${}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ uncertainty. A high angular-resolution and time-of-flight detector system for recoil protons from the reactions p(γ, γ)p and p(γ, π0)p

Using the Mainz NaI(Tl)BaF2 photon spectrometer CATS (Compton And Two photon Spectrometer) together with the prototype of a universal spectrometer for recoil protons TRAJAN (TRAjectory ANalyser) we have studied different methods to disentangle Compton scattering by the proton from the large π0 background through the energy range of the Δ resonance. CATS is a modular 48 cm ⊘ × 64 cm NaI(Tl) detector with an energy resolution of 1.5% combined with a 2π array of 61 BaF2 detectors. In-beam spectroscopy of $^{253,254}$No

In-beam conversion electron spectroscopy experiments have been performed on the transfermium nuclei 253,254No using the conversion electron spectrometer SACRED in nearly collinear geometry in conjunction with the gas-filled separator RITU at the University of Jyvaskyla. The experimental setup is discussed and the spectra are compared to Monte Carlo simulations. The implications for the ground-state configuration of 253No are discussed.

Prototype of an angular-selective photoelectron calibration source for the KATRIN experiment

The method of direct neutrino mass determination based on the kinematics of tritium beta decay, which is adopted by the KATRIN experiment, makes use of a large, high-resolution electrostatic spectrometer with magnetic adiabatic collimation. In order to target a sensitivity on the neutrino mass of 0.2 eV/c^2, a detailed understanding of the electromagnetic properties of the electron spectrometer is essential, requiring comprehensive calibration measurements with dedicated electron sources. A semiconductor detector telescope electron spectrometer

Abstract A simple d E d x+E type semiconductor detector telescope electron spectrometer featuring high detection efficiency and effective discrimination against γ-rays and heavy particles is described. The line shape of the spectrometer is better than that of a single detector of corresponding size; at 1 MeV, the peak-to-total ratio is approximately 0.8. The device is suited to the study of beta-ray spectra and conversion electron lines at energies above about 0.4 MeV.

A combination intermediate-image magnetic plus Si(Li) electron spectrometer for in-beam experiments

Abstract A magnetic lens plus Si(Li) combination in-beam beta spectrometer with focusing properties and field shape similar to those of an intermediate-image spectrometer is described. A high transmission and a large momentum band-width are achieved by placing both the target and the detector in a high magnetic field inside the lens. The beam enters the lens axially, and the Faraday cup is placed inside the lens. The spectrometer is well suited to singles conversion-electron spectroscopy, to electron-heavy particle coincidence measurements, to lifetime measurements and to studies of internal-pair transitions.

HINODE /EIS SPECTROSCOPIC VALIDATION OF VERY HOT PLASMA IMAGED WITH THE SOLAR DYNAMICS OBSERVATORY IN NON-FLARING ACTIVE REGION CORES

We use coronal imaging observations with SDO/AIA, and Hinode/EIS spectral data, to explore the potential of narrow band EUV imaging data for diagnosing the presence of hot (T >~5MK) coronal plasma in active regions. We analyze observations of two active regions (AR 11281, AR 11289) with simultaneous AIA imaging, and EIS spectral data, including the CaXVII line (at 192.8A) which is one of the few lines in the EIS spectral bands sensitive to hot coronal plasma even outside flares. The constellation-X focal plane microcalorimeter array: An NTD-germanium solution

The hallmarks of Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) germanium cryogenic thermistors include high reliability, reproducibility, and long term stability of bulk carrier transport properties. Using micro-machined NTD Ge thermistors with integral “flying” leads, we can now fabricate two-dimensional arrays that are built up from a series of stacked linear arrays. We believe that this modular approach of building, assembling, and perhaps replacing individual modules of detectors is essential to the successful fabrication and testing of large multi-element spectrometers. Details of construction are presented.

Measurement of fission products β decay properties using a total absorption spectrometer

In a nuclear reactor, the decay of fission fragments is at the origin of decay heat and antineutrino flux. These quantities are not well known while they are very important for reactor safety and for our understanding of neutrino physics. One reason for the discrepancies observed in the estimation of the decay heat and antineutrinos flux coming from reactors could be linked with the Pandemonium effect. New measurements have been performed at the JYFL facility of Jyvaskyla with a Total Absorption Spectrometer (TAS) in order to circumvent this effect.
