Search for long-lived particles produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV that decay into displaced hadronic jets in the ATLAS muon spectrometer
2019
A search for the decay of neutral, weakly interacting, long-lived particles using data collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC is presented. The analysis in this paper uses 36.1 fb(-1) of proton ...
Towards a "perfect" Penning trap mass spectrometer for unstable isotopes
1992
A Penning trap mass spectrometer has been set up at the on-line isotope separator ISOLDE/CERN for the mass determination of unstable heavy isotopes. The spectrometer should fulfil the following requirements: capture of external ions in high efficiency, high resolving power and accuracy, general applicability to all elements and isotopes available at the on-line facility.
Tests and developments of the PANDA Endcap Disc DIRC
2016
The PANDA experiment at the future Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) requires excellent particle identification. Two different DIRC detectors will utilize internally reflected Cherenkov light of charged particles to enable the separation of pions and kaons up to momenta of 4 GeV/c. The Endcap Disc DIRC will be placed in the forward endcap of PANDA's central spectrometer covering polar angles between 5° and 22°. Its final design is based on MCP-PMTs for the photon detection and an optical system made of fused silica. A new prototype has been investigated during a test beam at CERN in May 2015 and first results will be presented. In addition a new synthetic fused silica material…

Retrieval of sun-induced fluorescence using advanced spectral fitting methods
2015
Abstract The FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) satellite mission, candidate of ESA's 8th Earth Explorer program, is explicitly optimized for detecting the sun-induced fluorescence emitted by plants. It will allow consistent measurements around the O2-B (687 nm) and O2-A (760 nm) bands, related to the red and far-red fluorescence emission peaks respectively, the photochemical reflectance index, and the structural-chemical state variables of the canopy. The sun-induced fluorescence signal, overlapped to the surface reflected radiance, can be accurately retrieved by employing the powerful spectral fitting technique. In this framework, a set of fluorescence retrieval algorithms optimized for FLEX ar…
Gamow-Teller strengths in proton-rich exotic nuclei deduced in the combined analysis of mirror transitions
2005
Isospin symmetry is expected for the T-z=+/- 1 -> 0 isobaric analogous transitions in isobars with mass number A, where T-z is the z component of isospin T. Assuming this symmetry, strengths of analogous Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions within A=50 isobars were determined from a high energy-resolution T-z=+1 -> 0, Cr-50(He-3,t)Mn-50 study at 0 degrees in combination with the decay Q value and lifetime from the T-z=-1 -> 0, Fe-50 ->Mn-50 beta decay. This method can be applied to other pf-shell nuclei and can be used to study GT strengths of astrophysical interest.

Test Measurements of Modernized Version of Two-Detector Doppler Spectrometer
1999
The quality of the annihilation quanta energy measurements (Doppler effect) has greatly increased when experimenters have begun to introduce Doppler apparatus modifications. In the basic version, the experimental set-up consisted of high energy resolution Ge(Li) detector, amplifier and multichannel analyser. A simple construction and short time of data acquisition were the main advantages of that version of the apparatus. Competitive, angular correlation of annihilation radiation (ACAR) method was better from the resolution point of view and not worse when considering the range of momentum distribution, but the ACAR method required high activity positron sources and data acquisition time wa…

A digital approach for real time high-rate high-resolution radiation measurements
2014
Abstract Modern spectrometers are currently developed by using digital pulse processing (DPP) systems, showing several advantages over traditional analog electronics. The aim of this work is to present digital strategies, in a time domain, for the development of real time high-rate high-resolution spectrometers. We propose a digital method, based on the single delay line (SDL) shaping technique, able to perform multi-parameter analysis with high performance even at high photon counting rates. A robust pulse shape and height analysis (PSHA), applied on single isolated time windows of the detector output waveforms, is presented. The potentialities of the proposed strategy are highlighted thro…
