A tracking fiber detector based on silicon photomultipliers for the KAOS spectrometer

A tracking detector based on two meters long scintillating fibers read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is being developed for the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results from a prototype setup using 2 mm square fibers and large area SiPM readout are presented. The detection efficiency of such a combination was measured to be between 83 and 100% depending on the threshold on the SiPM amplitude. A Monte Carlo simulation based on a physical model was employed in order to extract the photon detection efficiency of the SiPM devices.
Electromagnetic Calorimeter for HADES Experiment

Electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) is being developed to complement dilep- ton spectrometer HADES. ECAL will enable the HADES@FAIR experiment to mea- sure data on neutral meson production in heavy ion collisions at the energy range of 2-10 AGeV on the beam of future accelerator SIS100@FAIR. We will report results of the last beam test with quasi-monoenergetic photons carried out in MAMI facility at Jo- hannes Gutenberg Universitat Mainz.
In-medium modifications of the pi pi interaction in photon-induced reactions

Differential cross sections of the reactions $(\gamma,\pi^\circ\pi^\circ)$ and $(\gamma,\pi^\circ\pi^++\pi^\circ\pi^-)$ have been measured for several nuclei ($^1$H,$^{12}$C, and $^{\rm nat}$Pb) at an incident-photon energy of $E_{\gamma}$=400-460 MeV at the tagged-photon facility at MAMI-B using the TAPS spectrometer. A significant nuclear-mass dependence of the $\pi\pi$ invariant-mass distribution is found in the $\pi^\circ\pi^\circ$ channel. This dependence is not observed in the $\pi^\circ\pi^{+/-}$ channel and is consistent with an in-medium modification of the $\pi\pi$ interaction in the $I$=$J$=0 channel. Ultra-stable implanted 83Rb/83mKr electron sources for the energy scale monitoring in the KATRIN experiment

The KATRIN experiment aims at the direct model-independent determination of the average electron neutrino mass via the measurement of the endpoint region of the tritium beta decay spectrum. The electron spectrometer of the MAC-E filter type is used, requiring very high stability of the electric filtering potential. This work proves the feasibility of implanted 83Rb/83mKr calibration electron sources which will be utilised in the additional monitor spectrometer sharing the high voltage with the main spectrometer of KATRIN. An angular-selective electron source for the KATRIN experiment

The KATRIN experiment is going to search for the average mass of the electron antineutrino with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV/c2. It uses a retardation spectrometer of MAC-E filter type to accurately measure the shape of the electron spectrum at the endpoint of tritium beta decay. In order to achieve the planned sensitivity the transmission properties of the spectrometer have to be understood with high precision for all initial conditions. For this purpose an electron source has been developed that emits single electrons at adjustable total energy and adjustable emission angle. High-resolution positron lifetime spectrometer with BaF2 scintillators

In this communication we report on a design of a fast coincidence positron lifetime spectrometer, which is based on single crystal barium fluoride (BaF2) scintillators. A good time resolution (190ps, FWHM), combined with a high efficiency, has been obtained in the normal experimental set-up (with cathode earthed in the photo multipliers). The pile-up effect is observed to disturbe the measured lifetimes in the 180 degree geometry due to the high detection efficiency of the BaF2 scintillator.
The beta-, neutrino- and proton-asymmetry in neutron beta-decay

This article describes measurements of angular-correlation coefficients in the decay of free neutrons with the superconducting spectrometer PERKEO II. A method for measuring the β-asymmetry coefficient A is presented, as well as a new method for determining the neutrino-asymmetry coefficient B, which allows a value for the proton-asymmetry coefficient C to be obtained for the first time. An ongoing experiment is trying to improve the accuracy of these quantities.
High-resolution spectroscopy and preliminary global analysis of C–H stretching vibrations of C2H4 in the 3000 and 6000cm−1 regions

Abstract Ethylene (ethene, H2C=CH2) is a naturally occurring compound in ambient air that affects atmospheric chemistry and global climate. The C2H4 spectrum is available in databases only for the 1000 and 3000 cm−1 ranges. In this work, the ethylene absorption spectrum was measured in the 6030–6250 cm−1 range with the use of a high resolution Bruker IFS 125HR Fourier-spectrometer and a two-channel opto-acoustic spectrometer with a diode laser. As a secondary standard of wavelengths, the methane absorption spectrum was used in both cases. Search for the radioactivity of 180mTa using an underground HPGe sandwich spectrometer

Abstract The radioactivity of 180m Ta has never been detected. The present attempt to detect it was carried out using a newly developed HPGe sandwich spectrometer installed 500 m water equivalent underground in the HADES laboratory. The sample consisted of 6 discs of tantalum of natural isotopic composition with a total mass of 1500 g and a total mass for 180 Ta of 180 mg. The sample was measured for 68 days and the resulting lower bound for the half-life of 180m Ta was 2.0×10 16 y, which is a factor of 2.8 higher than the previous highest value.

Photo-absorption of γ-rays in thin Al, Co, Ti, and Mo convertors was examined with the aim to produce quasi monoenergetic photoelectrons having an energy spread of 0.5-4.7eV about mean kinetic energies at discrete values between 18632 and 80321eV. The photoelectron rates were estimated for commercial photon sources of (241)Am, (119m)Sn, (125m)Te and (109)Cd with activities of 0.55-3.7GBq. Photoelectrons ejected by (241)Am γ- and X-rays from Co convertors were measured with two different electron spectrometers and obtained energy spectra were compared with Monte Carlo predictions.
