Dosimetry to Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) using organic compounds (alanine and ammonium tartrate) for mixed neutron-gamma fields

2015

Alongside with the development of Neutron Capture Therapy (NCT) and the use of thermal neutrons for radiotherapeutic purposes, many efforts have been devoted to the characterization of the beam in order to optimize therapy procedures. Reliable dose measurements should be able to determine the various (neutrons and photonic) components of the mixed beam usually employed for therapy. This paper studies the effect of additives such as Boric and Gadolinium nuclei on the sensitivity of neutron organic (alanine and ammonium tartrate) dosimeters analyzed through Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) technique. These dosimeters were exposed to a mixed (neutron-gamma) field mainly composed of thermal neutro…

Comparison of EPR response of alanine and Gd2O3-alanine dosimeters exposed to TRIGA Mainz reactor.

2015

In this work we report some preliminary results regarding the analysis of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) response of alanine pellets and alanine pellets added with gadolinium used for dosimetry at the TRIGA research reactor in Mainz, Germany. Two set-ups were evaluated: irradiation inside PMMA phantom and irradiation inside boric acid phantom. We observed that the presence of Gd2O3 inside alanine pellets increases the EPR signal by a factor of 3.45 and 1.24 in case of PMMA and boric acid phantoms, respectively. We can conclude that in the case of neutron beam with a predominant thermal neutron component the addition of gadolinium oxide can significantly improve neutron sensitivity of…

Search for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons at LEP

2006

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of "benchmark" models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. Thes…

2021

In Italy, most people with dementia are looked after by an informal caregiver and, due to the care burden and the lack of systematic-institutional support, they risk deleterious effects on psycho-physical well-being and on relational functionality with the assisted. Considering the ontological dimension of care, it is necessary to deepen the pedagogical implications deriving from the needs of the caregiver of people with Alzheimer Disease. The survey carried out based on the administration of two tools: the semi-structured interview addressed to the associations that in the Sicilian territory deal with family support and the check-list for conducting focus groups with cargivers, allowed the…

Analysis of the vertical distribution in a model of phytoplankton dynamics

2010

Phytoplankton often faces the dilemma of living in contrasting gradients of two essential resources: the light that comes from above and nutrients that are often supplied from below. In poorly mixed water columns, algae can be heterogeneously distributed, with thin layers of biomass found on the surface, in depth, or on the sediment surface. Here, we show that these patterns can result from intraspecific competition between light and nutrients. First, we present numerical solutions of a reaction-diffusion-taxis model for phytoplankton, nutrients and light. We argue that motile phytoplankton can form a thin layer under poorly mixed conditions. The numerical solution of this model indicates t…

Polychromatic femtosecond fluorescence studies of metal–polypyridine complexes in solution

2011

Femtosecond-resolved broadband fluorescence studies are reported for[ M(bpy)(3)](2+) (M = Fe, Ru), RuN3 and RuN719 complexes in solution. We investigated the pump wavelength dependence of the fluorescence of aqueous [ Fe(bpy)(3)](2+) and the solvent and ligand dependence of the fluorescence of Ru-complexes excited at 400 nm. For all complexes, the (MLCT)-M-1 fluorescence appears at zero time delay with a mirror-like image with respect to the absorption. It decays in <= 30-45 fs due to intersystem crossing to the (MLCT)-M-3 states, but a longer lived component of similar to 190 fs additionally shows up in RuN719 and RuN3. No solvent effects are detected. The very early dynamics are character…

Dependence of O2 diffusion dynamics on pressure and temperature in silica nanoparticles

2013

An experimental study of the molecular O2 diffusion process in high purity non-porous silica nanoparticles having 50 m2/g BET specific surface and 20 nm average radius was carried out in the temperature range from 127 to 177 °C at O2 pressure in the range from 0.2 to 66 bar. The study was performed by measuring the volume average interstitial O2 concentration by a Raman and photoluminescence technique using a 1,064 nm excitation laser to detect the singlet to triplet emission at 1,272 nm of the molecular oxygen in silica. A dependence of the diffusion kinetics on the O2 absolute pressure, in addition to temperature dependence, was found. The kinetics can be fit by the solution of Fick’s dif…

O2 Diffusion in Amorphous SiO2 Nanoparticles Probed by Outgassing

2012

An experimental study of the O2 diffusion process in nanoparticles of amorphous SiO2 in the temperature range from 98 to 157 °C was carried out by Raman and photoluminescence techniques. We studied O2 diffusion in high purity silica nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 14, 20, and 40 nm detecting the outgassing of molecules trapped during the manufacturing. The kinetics of diffusion is well described for all the investigated nanoparticles by the Fick’s equation proving its applicability to nanoscale systems. The diffusion coefficient features an Arrhenius law temperature dependence in the explored temperature range, and the diffusion coefficient values are in good agreement with extrapolat…

Irradiation induced Germanium Lone Pair Centers in Ge-doped Sol-gel SiO2: luminescence lifetime and temperature dependence

2010

We studied the temperature dependence of the emission profile and of the lifetime, measured at 4.3 eV, related to the germanium lone pair centers (GLPC) induced by gamma ray at 5 MGy in a Ge-doped silica sample and in an analogous sample irradiated at 10 MGy, in which by a successive thermal treatment up to 415 °C the induced GLPC has been modified (named residual GLPC in the following). The measurements were recorded in the temperature range 10-300 K using an excitation of ∼5.2 eV. The data show that the energy level scheme of the induced and the residual GLPC is very similar to that of the native defects generated during the synthesis, and the intersystem crossing process (ISC) of the ind…
