Measurement of the cosmic ray proton spectrum from 40 GeV to 100 TeV with the DAMPE satellite
2019
DAMPE satellite has directly measured the cosmic ray proton spectrum from 40 GeV to 100 TeV and revealed a new feature at about 13.6 TeV.
Measurements of the top quark branching ratios into channels with leptons and quarks with the ATLAS detector
2015
Measurements of the branching ratios of top quark decays into leptons and jets using events with t[bar over t] (top antitop) pairs are reported. Events were recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The collected data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb[superscript −1]. The measured top quark branching ratios agree with the Standard Model predictions within the measurement uncertainties of a few percent.

Effects of Pressure, Temperature, and Particles Size on O2 Diffusion Dynamics in Silica Nanoparticles
2013
The O2 diffusion process in silica nanoparticles is experimentally studied in samples of average radius of primary particles ranging from 3.5 to 20 nm and specific surface ranging from 50 to 380 (m2/g). The investigation is done in the temperature range from 98 to 177 °C at O2 pressure ranging from 0.2 to 66 bar by measuring the interstitial O2 concentration by Raman and photoluminescence techniques. The kinetics of diffusion can be described by the Fick’s equation with an effective diffusion coefficient depending on the temperature, O2 pressure, and particles size. In particular, the dependence of the diffusion coefficient on the pressure and nanoparticles size is more pronounced at lower …
Digital pulse processing techniques for X-ray and gamma ray semiconductor detectors
2012
Digital pulse processing (DPP) systems, based on direct digitizing and processing of detector signals, have recently been favoured over analog electronics, ensuring higher flexibility, stability and lower dead time. We present our research activities on the development of X-ray and gamma ray spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors and DPP systems. We developed off-line and real-time DPP systems able to perform precise height and shape analysis of detector pulses. X-ray and gamma ray spectra measurements with cadmium telluride (CdTe) and germanium (Ge) detectors highlight the excellent performance of the systems both at low and high rate environments (up to 800 kcps).
Direct Measurement of Mammographic X-Ray Spectra with a Digital CdTe Detection System
2012
In this work we present a detection system, based on a CdTe detector and an innovative digital pulse processing (DPP) system, for high-rate X-ray spectroscopy in mammography (1–30 keV). The DPP system performs a height and shape analysis of the detector pulses, sampled and digitized by a 14-bit, 100 MHz ADC. We show the results of the characterization of the detection system both at low and high photon counting rates by using monoenergetic X-ray sources and a nonclinical X-ray tube. The detection system exhibits excellent performance up to 830 kcps with an energy resolution of 4.5% FWHM at 22.1 keV. Direct measurements of clinical molybdenum X-ray spectra were carried out by using a pinhole…
Distance learning of university tutoring. Brief analysis of an experience
2022
The paper focuses on peer training in the period of the pandemic in which even university tutoring took place remotely. The activated involvement and co-construction of the path allow students to feel an active and proactive part of their growth path by portraying them from the passive role that the DAD entails. Peer tutoring is proposed as a strategic educational device to improve the quality of learning processes. In addition, peer support can activate social, emotional, and methodological skills that are fundamental for students' academic career. After a brief examination of the distance peer-tutoring, the analysis of a tutoring experience carried out at the University of Palermo is pres…
Atomically Precise Distorted Nanographenes: The Effect of Different Edge Functionalization on the Photophysical Properties down to the Femtosecond Sc…
2023
Nanographenes (NGs) have been attracting widespread interest since they combine peculiar properties of graphene with molecular features, such as bright visible photoluminescence. However, our understanding of the fundamental properties of NGs is still hampered by the high degree of heterogeneity usually characterizing most of these materials. In this context, NGs obtained by atomically precise synthesis routes represent optimal benchmarks to unambiguously relate their properties to well-defined structures. Here we investigate in deep detail the optical response of three curved hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) derivatives obtained by atomically precise synthesis routes. They are constituted…
Determination of sin2 θeff w using jet charge measurements in hadronic Z decays
2011
The electroweak mixing angle is determined with high precision from measurements of the mean difference between forward and backward hemisphere charges in hadronic decays of the Z. A data sample of 2.5 million hadronic Z decays recorded over the period 1990 to 1994 in the ALEPH detector at LEP is used. The mean charge separation between event hemispheres containing the original quark and antiquark is measured for bb̄ and cc̄ events in subsamples selected by their long lifetimes or using fast D*'s. The corresponding average charge separation for light quarks is measured in an inclusive sample from the anticorrelation between charges of opposite hemispheres and agrees with predictions of hadr…
