Characterization of cell wall proteins of yeast and hydrophobic mycelial cells of Candida albicans
1991
Cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of blastoconidia and blastoconidia bearing germ tubes of Candida albicans ATCC 26555 was monitored by assessing attachment of polystyrene microspheres to the cell surface, and we found that mature hyphae were significantly hydrophobic. Treatment of intact cells with low concentrations of beta-glucanase (Zymolyase 20T) or proteases abolished or significantly reduced attachment of latex beads to hyphae. This effect paralleled an obvious reduction in CSH of the entire cell population, as measured by an aqueous-hydrocarbon biphasic partitioning assay. Analysis of the cell wall material released by Zymolyase and adsorbed on polystyrene microspheres indicated tha…
The Sun as a benchmark of flaring activity in stellar coronae
2009
The solar corona is a template to study and understand stellar activity. However the solar corona differs from that of active stars: the Sun has lower X‐ray luminosity, and on average cooler plasma temperatures. Active stellar coronae have a hot peak in their emission measure distribution, EM (T), at 8–20 MK, while the non‐flaring solar corona has a peak at 1–2 MK. In the solar corona significant amounts of plasma at temperature ∼10 MK are observed only during flares. To investigate what is the time‐averaged effect of solar flares we measure the disk‐integrated time‐averaged emission measure, EMF (T), of an unbiased sample of solar flares. To this aim we analyze uninterrupted GOES/XRS light …

Moment-angle complexes and complexe manifolds
2010
The aim of this thesis is to extend the results of the article [B-M] on the relations between moment-angle complexes and complex manifolds. We will focus here on moment-angle complexes defined by a simplicial (not only polytopal) decomposition of the sphere. We will also seek to use the relationship between these two kinds of objects to be understand the topology of several complex manifolds. A generalization of the Carnahan–Starling approach with applications to four- and five-dimensional hard spheres
2018
Abstract Development of good equations of state for hard spheres is an important task in the study of real fluids. In a way consistent with other theoretical results, we generalize the famous Carnahan–Starling approach for arbitrary dimensions and apply it to four- and five-dimensional hard spheres. We obtain simple and integer representations for virial coefficients of lower orders and accurate equations of state. Since theoretically and practically validated, these results improve understanding of hard sphere fluids.
Amorphous polyphosphate/amorphous calcium carbonate implant material with enhanced bone healing efficacy in a critical-size defect in rats
2016
In this study the effect of amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) microparticles and amorphous calcium polyphosphate (polyP) microparticles (termed aCa-polyP-MP) on bone mineral forming cells/tissue was investigated in vitro and in vivo. The ACC particles (termed ACC-P10-MP) were prepared in the presence of Na-polyP. Only the combinations of polyP and ACC microparticles enhanced the proliferation rate of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Gene expression studies revealed that ACC causes an upregulation of the expression of the cell membrane-associated carbonic anhydrase IX (CA IX; formation of ACC), while the transcript level of the alkaline phosphatase (ALP; liberation of orthophosphate from…
Facile and efficient chemical functionalization of aliphatic polyesters by cross metathesis
2016
International audience; An effective preparation of new tailor-made macromolecular materials via a combination of two (atom-efficient) catalytic transformations is reported. First, new aliphatic polyesters with alternated composition have been prepared using a salen aluminum catalyst system. Next, the pendant vinyl moieties in those copolymers have been selectively transformed into various functional groups by metathesis in the presence of homogeneous Grubbs catalysts. The latter metathesis reaction has been optimized in terms of catalytic activity and selectivity, to define the conditions for an effective and safe procedure that does not affect the macromolecular architecture. All polymer …
Pharmacokinetics of a sustained release formulation of PDGFβ-receptor directed carrier proteins to target the fibrotic liver
2018
Liver fibrogenesis is associated with excessive production of extracellular matrix by myofibroblasts that often leads to cirrhosis and consequently liver dysfunction and death. Novel protein-based antifibrotic drugs show high specificity and efficacy, but their use in the treatment of fibrosis causes a high burden for patients, since repetitive and long-term parenteral administration is required as most proteins and peptides are rapidly cleared from the circulation. Therefore, we developed biodegradable polymeric microspheres for the sustained release of proteinaceous drugs. We encapsulated the drug carrier pPB-HSA, which specifically binds to the PDGF beta R that is highly upregulated on a…
Characterization of materials toward toluene traces detection for air quality monitoring and lung cancer diagnosis
2017
International audience; The aim of this work was to identify a nanoporous material able to trap toluene traces in order to develop a gas detection device for indoor air quality monitoring or biomedical diagnosis. A set of various adsorbents such as zeolites and activated carbon microspheres was studied here. First a detailed characterization of their porous properties was performed by nitrogen adsorption. Then adsorption of toluene and other interfering compounds which can selectively adsorbed with it, such as water and carbon dioxide, was studied in order to select the most suitable material. Results revealed that the activatedcarbon microspheres W5 and the zeolite NaY, which exhibit high …
Generalized Bloch spheres form-qubit states
2006
m-Qubit states are imbedded in $\mathfrak{Cl}_{2^m}$ Clifford algebras. Their probability spectra then depend on $O(2m)$ or $O(2m+1)$ invariants. Parameter domains for $O(2m(+1))-$ vector and tensor configurations, generalizing the notion of a Bloch sphere, are derived.
