Modeling of the N-terminal Section and the Lumenal Loop of Trimeric Light Harvesting Complex II (LHCII) by Using EPR

The major light harvesting complex II (LHCII) of green plants plays a key role in the absorption of sunlight, the regulation of photosynthesis, and in preventing photodamage by excess light. The latter two functions are thought to involve the lumenal loop and the N-terminal domain. Their structure and mobility in an aqueous environment are only partially known. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) has been used to measure the structure of these hydrophilic protein domains in detergent-solubilized LHCII. Truncated recombinant light harvesting complex II proteins are substrates for a protein kinase associated with photosystem II core complexes

AbstractPrevious studies directed towards understanding phosphorylation of the chlorophyll a/b binding proteins comprising light harvesting complex II (LHC II) have concentrated on a single phosphorylation site located close to the N-terminus of the mature proteins. Here we show that a series of recombinant pea Lhcb1 proteins, each missing an N-terminal segment including this site, are nevertheless phosphorylated by a protein kinase associated with a photosystem II core complex preparation. An Lhcb1 protein missing the first 58 amino acid residues is not, however, phosphorylated. EPR DOSIMETRY IN A MIXED NEUTRON AND GAMMA RADIATION FIELD

Suitability of Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy for criticality dosimetry was evaluated for tooth enamel, mannose and alanine pellets during the 'international intercomparison of criticality dosimetry techniques' at the SILENE reactor held in Valduc in June 2002, France. These three materials were irradiated in neutron and gamma-ray fields of various relative intensities and spectral distributions in order to evaluate their neutron sensitivity. The neutron response was found to be around 10% for tooth enamel, 45% for mannose and between 40 and 90% for alanine pellets according their type. Mössbauer Spectroscopy on Photosynthetic Bacteria: Investigation of Reaction Centers of Rhodopseudomonas Viridis

Crystals of 57Fe enriched reaction centers have been investigated by Mossbauer spectroscopy. The cytochrome irons are in the low spin ferric state. The non-heme iron of the electron accepting side is partly ferrous high spin and partly ferrous low spin (or ferric high spin). Under the conditions of the experiment sodium ascorbate reduces only one cytochrome iron into the ferrous low spin state. Membrane bound proteins become flexible at higher temperatures than proteins with a hydrophilic surface. They are also less flexible, at least up to temperatures of about 250 K.

Coordination-Induced Spin-State Switching with Nickel Chlorin and Nickel Isobacteriochlorin

We present the first coordination-induced spin-state switching with nickel chlorin and nickel isobacteriochlorin. The spin-state switching was monitored by UV-vis spectroscopy and NMR titration experiments. The association constants (K1 and K2) and thermodynamic parameters (ΔH and ΔS) of the coordination of pyridine were determined. The first X-ray analyses of a paramagnetic nickel chlorin and a nickel isobacteriochlorin provide further information about the structure of the octahedral complexes. Corticospinal and intracortical excitability is modulated in the knee extensors after acute strength training

The corticospinal responses to high-intensity and low-intensity strength-training of the upper limb are modulated in an intensity-dependent manner. Whether an intensity-dependent threshold occurs following acute strength training of the knee extensors (KE) remains unclear. We assessed the corticospinal responses following high-intensity (85% of maximal strength) or low-intensity (30% of maximal strength) KE strength-training with measures taken during an isometric KE task at baseline, post-5, 30 and 60-min. Spindle cell lipoma of the floor of the mouth. A case report.

A sessile swelling in the floor of the mouth appeared three years ago in a 29-year old Caucasian female located laterally to the opening of the right duct of Wharton. The mass covered by normal looking mucosa exhibited slight growth since then. After excision, histological examination revealed the presence of a tumor formed by areas of mature adipose cells interspersed with extensions of tightly disposed fusiform fibroblasts immunoreactive for vimentin and CD-34. There were foci of concentric fibroblasts forming dense whorls. When large these conglomerates exhibited chondrocytes in the center. Mast-cells were not rare throughout the fibroblastic areas. Intrinsic spin-orbit interaction in diffusive normal wire Josephson weak links: Supercurrent and density of states

We study the effect of the intrinsic (Rashba or Dresselhaus) spin-orbit interaction in superconductor--nanowire--superconductor (SNS) weak links in the presence of a spin-splitting field that can result either from an intrinsic exchange field or the Zeeman effect of an applied field. We solve the full non-linear Usadel equations numerically and analyze the resulting supercurrent through the weak link and the behavior of the density of states in the center of the wire. We point out how the presence of the spin-orbit interaction gives rise to a long-range spin triplet supercurrent, which remains finite even in the limit of very large exchange fields.
