We have tested whether tetracyclines (TETs) are able to protect mice from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced shock, a cytokine-mediated inflammatory reaction. Mice, injected with a single dose of tetracycline base (TETb; 1.5, 10 and 20 mg/kg of body weight) or doxycycline (DOXY; 1.5 mg/kg), were significantly protected from a lethal intraperitoneal injection of LPS (500 micrograms per mouse). TETs acted in early events triggered in response to LSP; in fact, they were no longer significantly protective if injected more than 1 h after the injection of endotoxin. Context A final diagnosis of benign lesions is reported in up to 21% of patients who underwent duodenocephalopancreatectomy for neoplasia, whereas no data have yet been published for resection of the body-tail. Objective To investigate the frequency and to characterize the benign lesions mimicking a neoplasia in the head and in the body-tail of the pancreas. Methods We retrospectively reviewed all the pancreatic specimens collected from 2005 to 2011 in the database of the Institute of Pathology of Mainz. Effect of cocaine and related drugs on the uptake of noradrenaline by heart and spleen

Noradrenaline uptake by heart and spleen after intravenous infusion of noradrenaline was measured in the pithed rat. Cocaine, given before the infusion, inhibited the noradrenaline uptake in relation (a) to the dose administered and (b) to the amount of noradrenaline infused. There was an association between increase in the pressor response to a test dose of noradrenaline and inhibition of the uptake by the heart. Drugs related chemically to cocaine, such as alpha-cocaine, amethocaine, and atropine, did not alter the noradrenaline uptake or potentiate the blood pressure response to noradrenaline. Concomitant inflammatory pseudotumor of the liver and spleen

We report the case of a 53-year-old man with inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the liver and spleen. This concomitant association has rarely been reported. The patient presented with a hypoechoic mass in the liver and a clinical picture of recurrent sepsis; hematochemical exams and imaging data were nonspecific. Antibiotic therapy improved the clinical course, but did not resolve it definitively. After 50 days of therapy, as the hepatic mass decreased a similar lesion appeared in the spleen. OBJECTIVE: Cerebral microvascular impairments occurring in AD may reduce Aβ peptide clearance and impact upon circulatory ultrastructure and function. We hypothesized that microvascular pathologies occur in organs responsible for systemic Aβ peptide clearance in a model of AD and that Liraglutide (Victoza(®)) improves vessel architecture. Herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 in the adrenal glands: Replication and histopathology

The adrenal glands were shown to be the most severely infected organs in the early phase of HSV-1 infections (up to 10 days p.i.) after i.p. infections in mice. Virus could be isolated from the adrenal glands as early as one hour after infection with pathogenic and apathogenic strains. Infection of the adrenal glands is a result of viremia. The content of HSV-1 (5 strains) was much higher in the adrenals than in spleen and liver. It peaked at 3-4 days p.i. compared to 1-2 days in spleen and liver. 1. We have studied 50 patients with primary polycythemia by radioisotope scanning (“scintigraphy”). In 96% of these patients the weight of the spleen exceeded 300 g. The mean splenic weight was 720 g. 2. 93 % of 48 cases with secondary polycythemia revealed a mean splenic weight below 300 g, as detected by scintigraphy. The mean splenic weight in this group was 195 g. 3. The scintigraphic determination of splenic size allows polycythemia vera to be distiguished from secondary polycythemia with a high degree of accuracy
