The noncovalent complexation of tetraethyl and tetraphenyl resorcinarenes with mono-, di-, and oligosaccharides was studied with negative-polarization electrospray ionization quadrupole ion trap and electrospray ionization Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass-spectrometric analysis. The saccharides formed 1:1 complexes with deprotonated resorcinarenes, which exhibited clear size and structure selectivity in their complexation. Nondestructive Size Determination of Thiol-Stabilized Gold Nanoclusters in Solution by Diffusion Ordered NMR Spectroscopy

Diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) was used as an analytical tool to estimate the size of thiol-stabilized gold nanoclusters in solution, namely, phenylethanethiol (PET) stabilized Au25(PET)18, Au38(PET)24, and Au144(PET)60. This was achieved by determining the diffusion coefficient and hydrodynamic radius from solution samples that were confirmed to be monodispersed by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The average cluster diameters obtained by this technique were estimated to be 1.7, 2.2, and 3.1 nm for the Au25(PET)18, Au38(PET)24, and Au144(PET)60 nanoclusters, respectively, which were shown to agree well with the average diameters of the corresponding single crystal or t…

ABSTRACT: In this study, the influence of the preparation technique (ball milling, spray drying, and film casting) of a supersaturated amorphous dispersion on the quality of solubility determinations of indomethacin in polyvinylpyrrolidone was investigated by means of statistical analysis. After annealing of the amorphous dispersions above the crystallization temperature for 2 h, the solubility curve was derived from the glass transition temperature of the demixed material using the Gordon–Taylor relationship and fitting with the Flory–Huggins model. Three organic-inorganic hybrid Mn-Anderson polyoxometalates (POMs), with both symmetrical and asymmetrical appended groups, have been synthesized, identified using electrospray mass spectrometry, and isolated using an approach that allows the three AA, BB, and AB compounds to be structurally characterized. Investigation of the self-assembly of the hybrids on hydrophilic surfaces reveals the formation of nanofibres with characteristics that reflect the nature of the substitution of the POM yielding a route to the programmed assembly of anisotropic hybrid nanostructures.

AbstractElectrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI-FTICRMS) with additional ab initio calculations were used to examine the alkali metal cation binding selectivity (i.e., molecular recognition) and host properties of tetraethyl resorcarene (1) and its per-methylated derivative (2). The significance of intramolecular hydrogen bonding for the crown conformation was demonstrated. The stoichiometry, geometry, stability, and solubility of the inclusion complexes of melatonin (MLT) with native cyclomaltooligosaccharides (α-, β- or γ-cyclodextrins, CDs) are determined experimentally by high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, calorimetric and solubility measurements, and mass spectrometry. The observed differences are discussed in terms of molecular recognition expression of the host-guest (h-g) interactions within the hydrophobic CDs cavities of different size. Positive and negative electrospray mass spectrometry (MS), in-time and in-space MS n experiments, high-resolution and accurate mass measurements obtained with an Orbitrap, together with density functional theory calculations have been used to study the gas-phase ion chemistry of a series of fluorinated 1,2,4-triazines. The acid-base and coordination properties of a family of pseudopeptidic ligands with C(2) symmetry derived from valine (4a-e) have been studied using a variety of techniques as a model for metal coordination in peptides and proteins. The Cu(2+) cation has been selected for coordination studies, although, for comparison, some results for Zn(2+) are also presented. Good agreement has been obtained between the results obtained by potentiometric titrations, spectroscopic analysis, and mass spectrometry (ESI) studies.
