The marine ecosystem on the eastern shelf of the Antarctic Peninsula was surveyed 5 and 12 years after the climate-induced collapse of the Larsen A and B ice shelves. An impoverished benthic fauna was discovered, that included deep-sea species presumed to be remnants from ice-covered conditions. The current structure of various ecosystem components appears to result from extremely different response rates to the change from an oligotrophic sub-ice-shelf ecosystem to a productive shelf ecosystem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of including 30-s sprints in one weekly low-intensity training (LIT) session during a 3-week transition period in elite cyclists. Tausta. Sprinttihiihdon kilpailusuorituksen palautusten aikana, ahtaiden ”varikkotilo-jen” takia, on kuntopyöräilemällä mahdollista tehostaa palautuksen aikaista aerobista aineenvaihduntaa. Tätä menetelmää ei ole aiemmin tutkittu, mutta huippuhiihtäjät ovat kuitenkin käyttäneet sitä käytännössä paljon maailmancupin kilpailuissa sekä arvoki-soissa. Sprinttiviestin vaatimuksissa korostuvat happamuuden sietokyvyn lisäksi aerobi-set ominaisuudet. Lyhyen palautumisajan vuoksi aerobisilla ominaisuuksilla on tärkeä pystyä välttämään liiallista pH:n laskua.
