Thresholding projection estimators in functional linear models
2008
We consider the problem of estimating the regression function in functional linear regression models by proposing a new type of projection estimators which combine dimension reduction and thresholding. The introduction of a threshold rule allows to get consistency under broad assumptions as well as minimax rates of convergence under additional regularity hypotheses. We also consider the particular case of Sobolev spaces generated by the trigonometric basis which permits to get easily mean squared error of prediction as well as estimators of the derivatives of the regression function. We prove these estimators are minimax and rates of convergence are given for some particular cases.
Exponential sums related to Maass forms
2019
We estimate short exponential sums weighted by the Fourier coefficients of a Maass form. This requires working out a certain transformation formula for non-linear exponential sums, which is of independent interest. We also discuss how the results depend on the growth of the Fourier coefficients in question. As a byproduct of these considerations, we can slightly extend the range of validity of a short exponential sum estimate for holomorphic cusp forms. The short estimates allow us to reduce smoothing errors. In particular, we prove an analogue of an approximate functional equation previously proven for holomorphic cusp form coefficients. As an application of these, we remove the logarithm …
Numerical study on localized defect modes in two-dimensional lattices: a high Q-resonant cavity
2003
Abstract The spectral widths and the quality factors of defect modes localized for different defects structures formed in a 2D photonic crystal composed of a square lattice of circular rods of indium antimonide (InSb) are theoretically investigated. It is first shown that some factors such as the lattice nature, the line defect orientation, the nature and the defect width have a significant influence on the optical properties of the studied structures and can improve the Q factor and defect peak transmission intensity. Particularly, the transmission spectra of the defects calculated by means the transfer-matrix-method for a particular structure of eight line defects introduced in its center…
Quotients of Fermat curves and a Hecke character
2005
AbstractWe explicitly identify infinitely many curves which are quotients of Fermat curves. We show that some of these have simple Jacobians with complex multiplication by a non-cyclotomic field. For a particular case we determine the local zeta functions with two independent methods. The first uses Jacobi sums and the second applies the general theory of complex multiplication, we verify that both methods give the same result.
Finite groups with real-valued irreducible characters of prime degree
2008
Abstract In this paper we describe the structure of finite groups whose real-valued nonlinear irreducible characters have all prime degree. The more general situation in which the real-valued irreducible characters of a finite group have all squarefree degree is also considered.
Foetal ECG recovery using dynamic neural networks
2002
Non-invasive electrocardiography has proven to be a very interesting method for obtaining information about the foetus state and thus to assure its well-being during pregnancy. One of the main applications in this field is foetal electrocardiogram (ECG) recovery by means of automatic methods. Evident problems found in the literature are the limited number of available registers, the lack of performance indicators, and the limited use of non-linear adaptive methods. In order to circumvent these problems, we first introduce the generation of synthetic registers and discuss the influence of different kinds of noise to the modelling. Second, a method which is based on numerical (correlation coe…
Flow-Injection Solid Phase Partial Least-Squares Spectrophotometric Simultaneous Determination of Iron, Nickel and Zinc
2002
A PLS-2 multivariate calibration method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of iron, nickel and zinc in ternary mixtures by solid phase spectrophotometry associated with flow injection analysis. Fe(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) form color complexes with 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (TAN), immobilized on a C18 bonded silica support, at pH 6.4. The proposed procedure is based on the different reaction/retention ratios of the studied ions on the solid support. Bilinear spectrophotometric data of the analytes, fixed in the solid support, were recorded in the 400-800 nm wavelength range as a function of time and a partial least squares (PLS-2) algorithm was used to predict results of…
Fourier transform infrared spectrometric strategies for the determination of Buprofezin in pesticide formulations
2002
Abstract Two different strategies for Buprofezin determination, an off-line extraction and stopped-flow determination and an automated procedure, based on the on-line extraction of Buprofezin samples with chloroform and flowing action analysis–fourier transform infrared (FIA–FT-IR) spectrometric measurement of the extracts, have been developed. For the treatment of the off-line extraction mode, data a three-factor partial least squares (PLSs) calibration was developed, using the region from 1465.7 to 1342.3 cm−1 with a single point baseline defined at 2051.9 cm−1 and based on the use of chloroform solutions of Buprofezin. The method provides a R.S.D. On the other hand, the recommended FIA m…
Chemical Element Levels as a Methodological Tool in Forensic Science
2014
The aim of the present study was to define a methodological strategy for understanding how post- mortem degradation in bones caused by the environment affects different skeletal parts and for selecting better preserved bone samples, employing rare earth elements (REEs) analysis and multivariate statistics. To test our methodological proposal the samples selected belong to adult and young individuals and were obtained from the Late Roman Necropolis of c/Virgen de la Misericordia located in Valencia city centre (Comunidad Valenciana, Spain). Therefore, a method for the determination of major elements, trace elements and REEs in bone remains has been developed employing Inductively-Coupled Pla…
Is R&D Enough to Take Advantage From External Knowledge?: Focusing on Coordination Mechanisms
2014
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of research and development (R&D) and coordination mechanisms (such as decentralization in decision-making and formalization of organizational processes) in the transformation of external knowledge into innovation results. We use survey data for performing standard ordinary least squares regressions in a representative sample of firms from the Spanish Ceramic Tile Industry. The results suggest that R&D is an important moderator influencing the relationship between acquiring external knowledge and innovation outcomes. Second, formalization tends to have a detrimental effect in the transformation of external knowledge into innovation outputs. T…
