Bis(μ-alkoxo) bridged dinuclear CuII2 and ZnII2 complexes of an isoindol functionality based new ligand: Synthesis, structure, spectral characterizat…
2014
Abstract Two new dinuclear copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of an isoindol functionality based new dinucleating ligand, H3hdpa (H3hdpa = 2-({[2-hydoxyethyl]-[2-hydroxy-3-(1-oxo-1,3-dihydro-isoindol-2-yl)-propyl]-amino}-methyl)-benzoic acid) have been synthesized and characterized. In methanol, the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of Cu(OAc)2·H2O and the ligand H3hdpa in the presence of NaOH at ambient temperature afforded a new dinuclear copper(II) complex, [Cu2(Hhdpa)2]·2CH3OH·6H2O (1). Similarly, in methanol, the reaction of stoichiometric amounts of Zn(OAc)2·2H2O and H3hdpa in the presence of NaOH yielded a new dinuclear zinc(II) complex, Na4[Zn2(hdpa)2](OAc)2 (2). Characterization of…
Equilibrium and kinetics studies on bibrachial lariat aza-crown/Cu(II) systems reveal different behavior associated with small changes in the structu…
2014
Abstract The high-yield synthesis of a new bibrachial lariat azacrown constituted by two tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) units functionalized in one of its arms with a 4-methylquinoline group linked by dimethylene pyridine spacers (L2) is reported for the first time. The speciation studies show formation of mono- and binuclear Cu2+ complexes of similar stability. Comparisons are established with the complexes formed by the precursor tren-quinoline derivative (L4) and with the previously reported ligands containing naphthalene instead of quinoline as the fluorophore (L1, L3). The kinetics of formation and decomposition of Cu2+ complexes with L1 and L2 has been studied. For L1, the acid-promot…
Polyaza and azaoxa macrocyclic receptors functionalised with fluorescent subunits; Hg2+ selective signalling
2000
A polyazacycloalkane containing naphthyl groups, 1,4,8,11-tetrakis(naphthylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L1), and the azaoxa cycloalkane receptors containing anthracenyl groups, 7,13-bis(anthracenylmethyl)-1,4,10-trioxa-7,13-diazacyclopentadecane (L2) and 10-anthracenylmethyl-1,4,7-trioxa-10-azacyclododecane (L3), have been synthesized and their activity as fluorescent chemosensors studied towards the metal cations Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ in THF–water (70∶30 v/v, 0.1 mol dm−3 tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, 25 °C) for L1 and 1,4-dioxane–water (70∶30 v/v, 0.1 mol dm−3 potassium nitrate, 25 °C) for L2 and L3. The crystal structure of the complex [Cd(L1)(Cl)][PF6] has been…
2-D mapping of skin chromophores in the spectral range 500 - 700 nm
2009
The multi-spectral imaging technique has been used for distant mapping of in-vivo skin chromophores by analyzing spectral data at each reflected image pixel and constructing 2-D maps of the relative concentrations of oxy-/deoxy-haemoglobin and melanin. Instead of using a broad visible-NIR spectral range, this study focuses on narrowed spectral band 500–700 nm, speeding-up the signal processing procedure. Regression analysis confirmed that superposition of three Gaussians is optimal analytic approximation for the oxy-haemoglobin absorption tabular spectrum in this spectral band, while superposition of two Gaussians fits well for deoxy-haemoglobin absorption and exponential function – for mel…
Edusemiotics of meaningful learning experience: Revisiting Kant’s pedagogical paradox and Greimas’ semiotic square
2016
AbstractIn this article we examine the educational process and learning from the edusemiotic point of view in terms of meaningful experience and meaningful action. A conception of meaningful experience is central in many branches of educational thinking, from pragmatism to existentialism. We analyze this conception from two traditional and somewhat remote perspectives, utilizing some themes of Kant’s educational philosophy on the one hand and Greimas’ semiotics on the other. Kant’s views of human formative powers – Bildung – will be described as a basic philosophy of learning experience. Kant’s theory is then critiqued from the perspective of existentialist educational philosophy. Concepts …
Getting rid of the Chi-square and Log-likelihood tests for analysing vocabulary differences between corpora
2018
Log-likelihood and Chi-square tests are probably the most popular statistical tests used in corpus linguistics, especially when the research is aiming to describe the lexical variations between corpora. However, because this specific use of the Chi-square test is not valid, it produces far too many significant results. This paper explains the source of the problem (i.e., the non-independence of the observations), the reasons for which the usual solutions are not acceptable and which kinds of statistical test should be used instead. A corpus analysis conducted on the lexical differences between American and British English is then reported, in order to demonstrate the problem and to confirm …
Serum ferritin is a discriminant marker for both fibrosis and inflammation in histologically proven non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients
2011
INTRODUCTION: Differentiation between steatosis and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is important as NASH progress to cirrhosis. No specific laboratory/imaging technique exists either to diagnose NASH or to select patients for liver biopsy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We evaluated serum ferritin and the features of metabolic syndrome with respect to histological inflammation and/or fibrosis in NAFLD patients. The Kleiner scoring system was used to classify NAFLD in consecutive liver biopsies. One hundred and eleven patients: median age 52.6, 64 males, obesity 62, diabetes mellitus (DM) 58, arterial hypertension 26 and hyperlipidaemia 40%. RESULTS: …
Altered postural control and stability in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy correlate with cognitive deficits
2017
Background & Aims: Cognitive dysfunction in cirrhotic patients with minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is associated with falls. Alterations in postural control and stability could contribute to increase falls risk in these patients. We aimed to assess whether postural control and direction-specific limits of stability are altered in cirrhotic patients with MHE compared to patients without MHE and controls. We also assessed if alterations in postural control correlate with neurological impairment and/or blood biomarkers. Methods: Posturography analysis, attention Stroop test and bimanual and visuo-motor coordination tests were performed in 18 controls, 19 patients with cirrhosis without M…
Severe reduction of blood lysosomal acid lipase activity in cryptogenic cirrhosis: A nationwide multicentre cohort study
2017
Background and aims Blood lysosomal acid lipase (LAL) is reduced in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, which is the major cause of cryptogenic cirrhosis (CC); few data on LAL activity in CC do exist. We investigated LAL activity in a cohort of patients with liver cirrhosis. Methods This is a multicentre cohort study including 274 patients with liver cirrhosis of different aetiology from 19 centres of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology distributed throughout Italy. Blood LAL activity (nmol/spot/h) was measured with dried blood spot extracts using Lalistat 2. Results Overall, 133 patients had CC, and 141 patients had cirrhosis by other causes (61 viral, 53 alcoholic, 20 alcoholic …
Non-invasive assessment of liver steatosis and fibrosis in HIV/HCV- and HCV- infected patients
2013
BACKGROUND: Conflicting data have been reported on the prevalence of liver steatosis, its risk factors and its relationship with fibrosis in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infection or with HCV mono-infection. AIM: The study aims were to assess steatosis prevalence and its risk factors in both HCV groups. We also evaluated whether steatosis was linked with advanced fibrosis. Sixty-eight HIV/HCV co-infected and 69 HCV mono-infected patients were consecutively enrolled. They underwent liver ultrasonography and transient elastography. Bright liver echo-pattern was used to diagnose steatosis; advanced fibrosis was defined as liver stiffness ≥ 9.5 kPa…
