Prospective Observational Study on acute Appendicitis Worldwide (POSAW)

2018

Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common surgical disease, and appendectomy is the treatment of choice in the majority of cases. A correct diagnosis is key for decreasing the negative appendectomy rate. The management can become difficult in case of complicated appendicitis. The aim of this study is to describe the worldwide clinical and diagnostic work-up and management of AA in surgical departments.

Cross-national validation of the social media disorder scale: findings from adolescents from 44 countries

2022

Background and aims: There is currently no cross-national validation of a scale that measures problematic social media use (SMU). The present study investigated and compared the psychometric properties of the social media disorder (SMD) scale among young adolescents from different countries. Design: Validation study. Setting and participants: Data came from 222 532 adolescents from 44 countries participating in the health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) survey (2017/2018). The HBSC survey was conducted in the European region and Canada. Participants were on average aged 13.54 years (standard deviation = 1.63) and 51.24% were girls. Measurement: Problematic SMU was measured using th…

Binocular motility system and temporomandibular joint internal derangement: A study in adults

2007

Abstract INTRODUCTION: Ocular convergence defects have been confirmed in adults with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction, but few studies of the relationship of the oculomotor apparatus to TMJ disc displacement have been reported. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of disc displacement on the oculomotor capacity of the eyes in adults. METHODS: Fifty symptomatic patients with bilateral TMJ disc displacement (13 men, 37 women; mean age, 28.84 +/- 8.22 years; range, 18-40 years) were compared with the same number of asymptomatic volunteers with normal disc position (14 men, 36 women; mean age, 29.96 +/- 5.04 years; range, 18-37 years). All subjects underwent standardized…

Aging affects the mental simulation/planning of the "rising from the floor" sequence.

2010

We investigated the effect of aging on the ability to mentally simulate/plan a complex sequential action of the whole body, namely "rising from the floor". Forty-four non-demented elderly people (mean age: 85.2±5.5 years) and 20 young people (mean age: 26.6±4.9 years) were included in the study. They were required to put in order six images representing the main movements necessary to get up from a sitting position on the floor. We showed that older subjects had poorer performance-both in terms of proportion of success and response time-than their younger counterparts. These results are in line with previous findings showing age-related alterations in action simulation/action planning proce…

Psychological and physical dimensions explaining life satisfaction among the elderly: A structural model examination

2007

The aim of the present paper is to analyze the effects of psychological well-being, physical functioning and socio-demographic factors on life satisfaction. Both a bivariate and a multivariate level of analyses have been used. Finally, a structural model explaining life satisfaction has been developed and validated. With respect to bivariate relations, there was evidence of significant positive relations between psychological well-being dimensions and life satisfaction and between physical conditions and life satisfaction as well. Also, as age increased there was a slow decrease in life satisfaction. Educational level was positively related to life satisfaction. A structural model gave valu…

Adapting and validating the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale for elderly Spanish population.

2019

ABSTRACTObjectives:This study aims to adapt and validate the most common measure of self-esteem, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), in the elderly Spanish population based on the initial one-factor model proposed by the author of the scale.Design:The factorial validity of the scale was tested using confirmatory factor analysis.Setting:The study was carried out in the city of Valencia (Spain).Participants:A total of 231 elderly people with a mean age 72.68 (SD=8.55).Measurements:The participants completed the questionnaire RSES for the validation process, sociodemographic data and Mini-Mental State Examination. Results:Confirmatory factor analysis with a five-item structure for the one-f…

Independent and Combined Association of Physical Activity and Cardiac Disease on Mortality Risk in the Very Old

2010

Objectives: This study investigated physical activity as a predictor of all-cause mortality among 75- and 80-year-old people with and without chronic cardiac disease over a 10-year follow-up period. Method: Using the Evergreen Project data, four study groups were formed according to the respondent’s self-reported level of physical activity as well as chronic cardiac diseases: active without cardiac disease (control group = ANCD), active with cardiac disease (ACD), sedentary without cardiac disease (SNCD), and sedentary with cardiac disease (SCD). Results: In the analyses, the ACD (HR 1.69, 95% CI 1.02-2.81) and the SNCD (1.76, 1.14-2.73) groups had almost one and a half times greater risk …

Test-and-treat strategy for Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection in older patients.

2010

Abstract Despite Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is highly prevalent in older populations, low rates of HP diagnosis and eradication are reported in older persons, even in geriatric wards. We aim to evaluate the results of a HP-eradicating program in a sample of older patients in relation to dyspeptic symptoms and to endoscopic findings. A pool of 140 subjects (female/ale = 86/54, mean age 68.6 ± 5.4 years) with positive C 13 -urea breath test were recruited, clinically evaluated to investigate the presence and characteristics of dyspepsia and abdominal pain, and underwent gastric endoscopic examination. HP-eradication was obtained in 87.9% of subjects with first-line triple therapy, reg…

Combination of intensive cognitive rehabilitation and donepezil therapy in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

2009

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AchEIs) are extensively used in Alzheimer's disease (AD) while reality orientation therapy (ROT) is a cognitive rehabilitation indicated for mentally deteriorated patients. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the combination of donepezil with an intensive ROT with active participation of the caregiver. Patients with AD (n=100, mean age 78.4±4.3 years) initiated treatment with donepezil, 5mg/day; 62 of them underwent a 3-week, daily ROT and physical reactivation training with the caregiver (Group A); 38 participants received only donepezil therapy (Group B). All subjects were tested for cognitive and functional abilities at baseline, at the end of the traini…

Mental well-being: a 16-year follow-up among older residents in Jyväskylä.

2009

Abstract This study investigated changes in perceived depression, anxiety and loneliness during a 16-year follow-up among elderly Jyvaskyla residents born in 1914–1923. A further concern was with how perceived atmosphere in the formative environment was reflected in depression, anxiety and loneliness in old age. The first phase of the study took place in 1988 when interviews were conducted with 635 persons (241 men and 394 women). Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Finnish modified version of Beck's 13-item depression scale (RBDI), which was completed fully by 74% of the interviewees. Loneliness was assessed with a single four category item. In the second phase of the study in 1…
