Multiple linear regression analysis of RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols

The multiple linear regression analysis of the RF values of chlorinated catechols and guaiacols has been carried out. The resolved terms, in the regression equation have been used to explain the relative mobility of chlorinated compounds to the reference compound (catechol or guaiacol). The best correlations have been observed for solvent systems which give the greatest standard deviations and relative differences between the RF values. A good correlation between the standard deviation of the RF values and the term which represents the effect of the chlorine atom ortho to the hydroxyl group(s) have also been observed.

Technical Note: Airborne Sound Insulation of Hollow Brickwork

This paper reports on the uncertainty of in situ measurements of the airborne sound insulation of hollow-brick walls in different housing plans, with emphasis on the influence of expansion joints. The mean and standard deviation of multiple measurements are obtained, which show significant differences in insulation values despite the fact that the same construction was used in each case.

Accuracy and stability of temperature probes for intracranial application.

Intracranial temperature measurement may play a pivotal role for prognosis and treatment of neurological and neurosurgical patients. For reliable clinical application, accurate temperature readings are therefore necessary. We present an independent in vitro study investigating the accuracy and stability of three temperature probes. Eight Neurovent-P Temp (RN), eight Licox temperature sensors (LT) and eight Neurotrend sensors (NT) were placed into a water bath. The temperature was increased in 3 degrees C increments from 30 to 42 degrees C before (accuracy test day 0) and after (accuracy test day 5) a long-term stability test run at 37 +/- 0.2 degrees C. Effects of ocean acidification on embryonic respiration and development of a temperate wrasse living along a natural CO2 gradient

Volcanic CO2 seeps provide opportunities to investigate the effects of ocean acidification on organisms in the wild. To understand the influence of increasing CO2 concentrations on the metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) and the development of ocellated wrasse early life stages, we ran two field experiments, collecting embryos from nesting sites with different partial pressures of CO2 [pCO2; ambient (400 µatm) and high (800-1000 µatm)] and reciprocally transplanting embryos from ambient- to high-CO2 sites for 30 h. Elimination of the unknown irrelevant matrix absorbance by using the H-Point Standard Additions Method (HPSAM)

It is demonstrated how the H-Point Standard Additions Method (HPSAM) using DeltaA as analytical signal (from data at three previously selected wavelengths) is only related with analyte concentration when unknown irrelevant matrix absorbance is present. The method is compared with the most common previously reported methods, such as derivative spectroscopy or the compensation method. The obtained results show that the proposed HPSAM leads to the same found concentration of analyte as the other reported methods, except detection limits and standard deviation for six replicates which are lower, because of the use of absorbance data (instead of first derivative data as usual). Measurement of the single-top-quark production cross section at CDF.

We report a measurement of the single top quark production cross section in 2.2 ~fb-1 of p-pbar collision data collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV. Candidate events are classified as signal-like by three parallel analyses which use likelihood, matrix element, and neural network discriminants. These results are combined in order to improve the sensitivity. We observe a signal consistent with the standard model prediction, but inconsistent with the background-only model by 3.7 standard deviations with a median expected sensitivity of 4.9 standard deviations. Empirical investigation of stock price dynamics in an emerging market

Abstract We study the development of an emerging market – the Budapest Stock Exchange – by investigating the time evolution of some statistical properties of heavily traded stocks. Moving quarter by quarter over a period of two and a half years we analyze the scaling properties of the standard deviation of intra-day log-price changes. We observe scaling using both seconds and ticks as units of time. For the investigated stocks a Levy shape is a good approximation to the probability density function of tick-by-tick log-price changes in each quarter: the index of the distribution follows an increasing trend, suggesting it could be used as a measure of market efficiency.

Tests of multinormality based on location vectors and scatter matrices

Classical univariate measures of asymmetry such as Pearson’s (mean-median)/σ or (mean-mode)/σ often measure the standardized distance between two separate location parameters and have been widely used in assessing univariate normality. Similarly, measures of univariate kurtosis are often just ratios of two scale measures. The classical standardized fourth moment and the ratio of the mean deviation to the standard deviation serve as examples. Calibration of the Norwegian motion laboratory using conformal geometric algebra

This paper applies Conformal Geometric Algebra (CGA) as a tool for calibrating the robotic equipment found in the Norwegian Motion Laboratory. By using the inner product of CGA to measure the distance between a point and the surface of a plane/sphere, the least-squares method can be used to solve for the unknown parameters describing the plane/sphere in an efficient and intuitive way given n measured points. Positional data samples were acquired from using a high precision Laser tracker (FARO Xi), and the overall calibration error was found to be no more than 4.90mm, and the maximum standard deviation 3.25mm.
