Text localization from photos

2009

In this paper a new text extraction algorithm is proposed. In real scenes the text is usually overlapped or is part of the background. To identify the text regions, in complex conditions, a method exploiting a “multi-resolution feature based method” for extracting text with undefined dimension has been developed. Once identified, the multi-resolution information are merged and skimmed through a set of Support Vector Machines (SVM). The tests and the comparisons with other techniques, performed on heterogeneous images, have shown the effectiveness of the proposed.

Natural and intuitive interaction between users and complex systems is a crucial research topic in human-computer interaction. A major direction is the definition and implementation of systems with natural language understanding capabilities. Deconstruction and hermeneutical space as keys to understanding the rural

The purpose of this article is to complement the existing literature on defining the rural by suggesting a novel approach that makes possible a holistic understanding of the rural. The proposed approach is based on deconstruction of the concept of the rural and on hermeneutical philosophy. The current approaches applied in rural studies are evaluated through the lens of holistic understanding, and solutions to the observed problems are discussed. The problems of current rural studies stem from inadequate conceptualization and biased social theory. The aim of this essay is to reflect on the governance of unvaccinated Italian children aged between zero and six years, due to the new regulatory system on mandatory vaccination in Italy (Law Decree no. 73/2017, converted into Law no. 119/2017). In order to strengthen and protect the right to health, the Italian government first, and then the lawmakers, set forth a specific prohibition preventing unvaccinated children from attending preschool, whether public or private. This article offers a dialogical exploration of student teachers’ reflections on notions of insideness and outsideness, the focal themes of an Erasmus+ ten-day intensive programme (IP). The arts-based, interdisciplinary IP involved 32 student participants and twelve members of staff from eight European universities hosted by the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The data for this paper are based on the final written essays of student participants as they reflected on their understanding of outsideness and insideness at the end of the IP. RESUMEN: Este artículo presenta un estudio sobre la influencia del uso didáctico y científico de las representaciones gráficas cartesianas en la ejecución que hacen los estudiantes de las tareas propias de tres niveles de comprensión gráfica. Los resultados muestran que el uso didáctico instrumental influye negativamente en la ejecución de las tareas de los niveles de comprensión explícita y conceptual de los estudiantes con formación en ciencias y en el nivel de comprensión implícita de los estudiantes sin esta formación. The present study focused on the knowledge about the nature of science and the question of the extent to which this knowledge could be explained by employing scientific knowledge, as well as attitudes towards science learning. We obtained data from 171 Spanish pre-service primary school teachers on their knowledge about: a) science concepts, b) science process skills, c) the nature of science (that was split into science construction and validation and the role and function of scientific models), and d) their attitudes towards science learning.
