A possible use of selected essential oils and Citrosept to inhibit the growth of Fusarium solani Mart. (Sacc.)

2016

Laboratory experiments have been carried out to determine the effects of lemon, cedar, pine and thyme oils as well as Citrocept on the growth of Fusarium solani Mart. (Sacc.) mycelium isolated from stored potato tubers. The biotic property of essential oils and Citrocept in inhibiting the linear growth of F. solani was assessed with the use of poisoned culture media, whereas the fungistatic property was determined by calculating, with the use of Abbott formula, the percentage indicating how many fungal colonies were inhibited from growth. A complete inhibition of the pathogen’s growth was observed in the presence of thyme oil at a concentration of 0.2% to 2% as well as in the presence of le…

The absorption of large volumes of irrigation fluid is a major problem in transurethral prostatic surgery (TUR-P). Various indicators have been tested to monitor fluid absorption with regard to continuous registration and sufficient accuracy. The volumetric fluid balance is not suitable as a routine method because of its inaccuracy. Easily accessible parameters are unspecific because of surgical bleeding (haematocrit [Hct]), or are interfered with by physiological counter-regulatory actions (serum sodium [Na] concentration). In 1986 Hulten et al. suggested adding 2% ethanol to the irrigation fluid as a marker and investigated it intermittently in the expired air with an alcohol-test applian…

Hydrate Networks under Mechanical Stress – A Case Study for Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 ·8H 2 O

2016

The nature of the bound water in solids with hydrogen-bonded networks depends not only on temperature and pressure but also on the nature of the constituents. The collapse and reorientation of these network structures determines the stability of hydrated solids and transitions to other crystalline or amorphous phases. Here, we study the mechanochemically induced loss of bound water in Co₃(PO₄)₂·8H₂O and compare this process to the behavior under hydrostatic pressure. The associated phase transition and its kinetics were monitored by X-ray powder diffraction with Synchrotron radiation and quantitative IR spectroscopy. High shearing forces are responsible for the degradation of the hydrogen-b…

Enhancing formability of aluminium alloys by superimposing hydrostatic pressure

2003

Publisher Summary One of the strategic topics in manufacturing engineering is represented by the reduction of components weight. This aim is pursued by utilizing accurate and effective design tools and using lightweight metals such as aluminum, magnesium, and titanium alloys. Unfortunately, such materials often show a poor ductility, and thus enhancing formability is nowadays one of the most relevant research focus, as well as the development of effective and reliable predictive models of defects insurgence during forming processes. In this scenario, forming by means of superimposed hydrostatic pressure represents a promising alternative manufacturing technique. The chapter discusses the si…

Microwave harmonic emission in MgB2 superconductor: Comparison with YBA2CU3O7

2006

We report results of microwave second-harmonic generation in ceramic samples of MgB2, prepared by different methods. The SH signal has been investigated as a function of the temperature and the static magnetic field. The results are discussed in the framework of models reported in the literature. We show that the peculiarities of the SH signal are related to the specific properties of the sample. A comparison with the results obtained in ceramic and crystalline YBa2Cu3O7 shows that the second-harmonic emission in MgB2 is weaker than that observed in ceramic YBa2CuO7. Can we compare haemophilia carriers with clotting factor deficiency to male patients with mild haemophilia?

2020

Introduction Certain haemophilia carriers demonstrate an increased bleeding tendency, mainly related to clotting factor deficiency. No study has so far formally compared the bleeding phenotype of women and girls with mild FVIII or FIX deficiency and associated management with that of male patients affected by mild haemophilia A and B. Material and methods We retrospectively evaluated 44 women and girls with mild FVIII or FIX deficiency (FVIII or FIX 0.05-0.5 IU/mL) and 77 male patients with mild haemophilia A or B and compared them with respect to clotting factor level, age at and trigger for diagnosis, as well as treatment modalities. Results After excluding gender-related haemorrhagic sym…

Poroelastic metamaterials with negative effective static compressibility

2017

We suggest a three-dimensional metamaterial structure exhibiting an isotropic expansion in response to an increased hydrostatic pressure imposed by a surrounding gas or liquid. We show that this behavior corresponds to a negative absolute (rather than only differential) effective compressibility under truly static and stable conditions. The poroelastic metamaterial is composed of only a single ordinary constituent solid. By detailed numerical parameter studies, we find that a pressure increase of merely one bar can lead to a relative increase in the effective volume exceeding one percent for geometrical structure parameters that should be accessible to fabrication by 3D printing.

Emergency management in patients with haemophilia A and inhibitors on prophylaxis with emicizumab: AICE practical guidance in collaboration with SIBi…

2020

Emicizumab has been approved in several countries for regular prophylaxis in patients with congenital haemophilia A and FVIII inhibitors because it substantially reduces their bleeding risk and improves quality of life. However, although significantly less frequent, some breakthrough bleeds may still occur while on emicizumab, requiring treatment with bypassing or other haemostatic agents. Thrombotic complications have been reported with the associated use of activated prothrombin complex concentrates. In addition, when surgery/invasive procedures are needed while on emicizumab, their management requires multidisciplinary competences and direct supervision by experts in the use of this agen…
