First Results of the Testing of the Liquid Gallium Jet Limiter Concept for ISTTOK
2006
The use of liquid metals as plasma facing components in tokamaks has recently experienced a renewed interest stimulated by their advantages to the development of a fusion reactor. Liquid metals have been proposed to solve problems related to the erosion and neutronic activation of solid walls submitted to high power loads allowing an efficient heat exhaustion from fusion devices. Presently the most promising materials are Lithium and Gallium. ISTTOK, a small size tokamak, will be used to test the behavior of a liquid Gallium jet in the vacuum chamber and its influence on the plasma. This paper presents a description of the conceived setup as well as experimental results. The liquid Gallium …
Plasma cell-free DNA in diagnostic KRAS mutation testing
2015
Epidermaalisen kasvutekijän reseptorin (EGFR) monoklonaalisia vasta-aineita (mAb) käytetään apuna metastaattisen kolorektaalisyövän (mCRC) hoidossa. Aktivoivat mutaatiot KRAS- ja NRAS-onkogeeneissä tekevät syöpäsolut vastustuskykyisiksi anti-EGFR-vasta-aineille, ja tästä syystä tuumorit tulee genotyypittää ennen hoidon aloittamista. Kudosbiopsian ottaminen on kuitenkin invasiivinen toimenpide, eikä näyte välttämättä edusta kattavasti syövän kaikkien solupopulaatioiden geneettisiä muutoksia. Kehitimme j…
Measuring electrostatic double-layer forces on HOPG at high surface potentials
1999
Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate surface forces in aqueous electrolyte solutions between surfaces with high electric potentials. Therefore the force between a surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) and a silicon nitride tip of an atomic force microscope was measured. Various electric potentials by a counter electrode were applied to the HOPG, which served as working electrode. As predicted by the Poisson–Boltzmann theory the electrostatic double-layer force changed only in a narrow potential range of ≈300 mV. At high negative sample potentials, where the negatively charged tip was repelled from the sample, the force saturated. At positive potentials an attract…
Single-molecule switching with non-contact atomic force microscopy
2011
We report upon controlled switching of a single 3,4,9,10-perylene tetracarboxylic diimide derivative molecule on a rutile TiO(2)(110) surface using a non-contact atomic force microscope at room temperature. After submonolayer deposition, the molecules adsorb tilted on the bridging oxygen row. Individual molecules can be manipulated by the atomic force microscope tip in a well-controlled manner. The molecules are switched from one side of the row to the other using a simple approach, taking benefit of the sample tilt and the topography of the titania substrate. From density functional theory investigations we obtain the adsorption energies of different positions of the molecule. These adsorp…
Baicalin and berberine ultradeformable vesicles as potential adjuvant in vitiligo therapy.
2018
0.5-1% of the world's population is affected by vitiligo, a disease characterized by a gradual depigmentation of the skin. Baicalin and berberine are natural compounds with beneficial activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and proliferative effects. These polyphenols could be useful for the treatment of vitiligo symptoms, and their efficacy can be improved by loading in suitable carriers. The aim of this work was to formulate and characterize baicalin or berberine loaded ultradeformable vesicles, and demonstrate their potential as adjuvants in the treatment of vitiligo. The vesicles were produced using a previously reported simple, scalable method. Their morphology, size distrib…
Relation between structural and release properties in a polysaccharide gel system.
2007
Abstract The potential utility of κ-carrageenan gels for preparing drug release devices is here shown. Structural properties of κ-carrageenan gels prepared with different salt composition and containing Ketoprofen sodium salt, as model drug, have been evaluated with static light scattering and rheological measurements. These properties have been correlated with release profiles in vitro at pH 5.5. Release properties from gelled matrices have been compared with those obtained by two commercial products containing the same drug. Results show that: i) in this system it is possible to easily control the gel texture by using different cationic concentration; ii) the kinetics of drug release by κ…

RETROVESICAL MASS IN MEN
1999
We review the differential diagnosis and treatment of retrovesical masses in men.During the last 8 years 21 male patients 3 to 79 years old (mean age 47.1) presented with symptoms or signs of a retrovesical mass. Clinical features and diagnostic findings were reviewed, and related to surgical and histopathological findings. The retrovesical masses included prostatic utricle cyst in 3 cases, prostatic abscess in 1, seminal vesicle hydrops in 6, seminal vesicle cyst in 2, seminal vesicle empyema in 3, large ectopic ureterocele in 1, myxoid liposarcoma in 1, malignant fibrous histiocytoma in 1, fibrous fossa obturatoria cyst in 1, hemangiopericytoma in 1 and leiomyosarcoma in 1. In 17 patients …
An Improved Empirical Relation to Determine the Particle Number Density of Fluid-Like Ordered Charge-Stabilized Suspensions
2001
Polystyrene as an archetypal charge-stabilized colloid model system was used in this work under well defined preparation conditions. A continuous preparation technique was used to control the suspension parameters salt concentration c and particle number density n. Measurements of n were performed using both conductivity in the completely deionized state and static light scattering. We found a significant deviation between the position of the first maximum of the static structure factor qmax=2π/L and an estimate identifying the relevant length scale L with the average inter-particle distance d¯=n−1/3. Instead, qmax was observed to follow the relation qmax=(2.20±0.03)π/d¯, which is equivalen…
Increased expression of leptin and the leptin receptor as a marker of breast cancer progression: possible role of obesity-related stimuli.
2006
Abstract Purpose: Recent in vitro studies suggested that the autocrine leptin loop might contribute to breast cancer development by enhancing cell growth and survival. To evaluate whether the leptin system could become a target in breast cancer therapy, we examined the expression of leptin and its receptor (ObR) in primary and metastatic breast cancer and noncancer mammary epithelium. We also studied whether the expression of leptin/ObR in breast cancer can be induced by obesity-related stimuli, such as elevated levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), estradiol, or hypoxic conditions. Experimental Design: The expression of leptin and ObR was examined by immunohistochemistry…
