A Phase 2 Trial of Ixabepilone in Asian Patients with Advanced Gastric Cancer Previously Treated with Fluoropyrimidine-Based Chemotherapy

2012

ABSTRACT Background The highest rates of gastric cancer occur in Eastern Asia. Fluoropyrimidine-based therapy is used initially in unresectable and metastatic disease, following progression, 60–70% of patients in Asian countries subsequently receive second-line chemotherapy. However, there is no standard treatment in this setting. Ixabepilone, an epothilone B analog, is a non-taxane microtubule-stabilizing agent with clinical anti-tumor activity across multiple tumor types. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of single-agent ixabepilone as a second-line chemotherapy in Asian patients. Methods Asian patients with unresectable or metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma who had failed previous fluo…

Outcomes of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 according to level of frailty

2021

Background The complications from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been the subject of study in diverse scientific reports. However, many aspects that influence the prognosis of the disease are still unknown, such as frailty, which inherently reduces resistance to disease and makes people more vulnerable. This study aimed to explore the complications of COVID-19 in patients admitted to a third-level hospital and to evaluate the relationship between these complications and frailty. Methods An observational, descriptive, prospective study was performed in 2020. A sample of 254 patients from a database of 3,112 patients admitted to a high-level hospital in Madrid, Spain was analyzed. …

Increased Joint Mobility Is Associated With Impaired Transversus Abdominis Contraction.

2020

Mitchell, UH, Owen, PJ, Rantalainen, T, and Belavý, DL. Increased joint mobility is associated with impaired transversus abdominis contraction. J Strength Cond Res 36(9): 2472-2478, 2022-Increased joint mobility is a risk factor for joint injury, but muscle function may be able to compensate for it. Current evidence suggests reduced force production capacity in people with hypermobility. However, little is known about the lumbar spine. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to assess whether there was a link between joint mobility and transverse abdominis and multifidus muscles contraction, muscles ascribed a core-stability role. Using a modified quantitative version of the Beighton …

Effect of β-cryptoxanthin plus phytosterols on cardiovascular risk and bone turnover markers in post-menopausal women: a randomized crossover trial.

2014

Abstract Background and aim Post-menopausal women are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease and bone demineralization. Phytosterols (PS) may be used for hypercholesterolemia in some groups and β-cryptoxanthin (β-Cx) displays a unique anabolic effect on bone. Our aim was to assess the changes in cardiovascular and bone turnover markers from the oral intake of β-Cx and PS in post-menopausal women. Methods and results A randomized, double-blind, crossover study with β-Cx (0.75 mg/day) and PS (1.5 g/day), single and combined, was performed in 38 postmenopausal women. Diet was supplemented with 1 × 250 mL milk-based fruit drink/day for 4 weeks with a wash-out period of 4-weeks in between. Ser…

Randomized prospective study on the influence distal block and Gamma 3 nail on the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of femur

2015

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to assess the need to lock the Gamma 3 nail (Stryker, Mahwah, New Jersey, USA) distally for intertrochanteric fractures of femur 31-A1 and 31-A2 of the AO. Materials and methods Details were recorded on a sample of 177 patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures treated in our hospital by a standard Gamma nail between June 2011 and January 2013. A prospective study was conducted by randomizing patients by year of birth, even numbers with, or odd numbers without, and distal locking, forming two groups of 90 and 87 fractures, respectively. Results The patients treated with a distal locking nail had an increased incidence of medical complic…

Comparison of Postural Features and Muscle Strength between Children with Idiopathic Short Stature and Healthy Peers in Relation to Physical Exercise

2020

Previous research has reported that children with idiopathic short stature (ISS) showed functional and cognitive impairments. The purpose of this study was to compare muscle strength and body posture between children with ISS treated with growth hormone (GH) and healthy peers (healthy children, HC), and to analyze whether these parameters were affected by physical exercise. Eighteen children for the ISS group (mean age: 10.96 ± 1.68 years) and 26 children for the HC group (mean age: 10.19 ± 1.06 years) were recruited for the study. All participants performed the following assessments: handgrip and Sargent test for the muscle strength evaluation; baropodometric and stabilometric test for the…

Individualized Monitoring of Muscle Recovery in Elite Badminton

2019

\(\bf Purpose:\) Individualized reference ranges for serum creatine kinase (CK) and urea are a promising tool for the assessment of recovery status in high-level endurance athletes. In this study, we investigated the application of this approach in racket sports, specifically for the monitoring of elite badminton players during the preparation for their world championships. \(\bf Methods:\) Seventeen elite badminton players were enrolled of which 15 could be included in the final analysis. Repeated measurements of CK and urea at recovered (R) and non-recovered (NR) time points were used for the stepwise individualization of group-based, prior reference ranges as well as for the evaluation o…

Intra-operative locally injected pharmacotherapy as a novel strategy for adhesion prophylaxis.

2012

Abstract Background Pharmacotherapy for peritoneal adhesion prophylaxis has been a focus for intensive research. Previous strategies included intravenous and intraperitoneal application of suitable pharmaceutical agents. However, success of these strategies in humans has been limited. Here we describe intra-operative local injection of pharmaceuticals as a novel strategy for adhesion prophylaxis. Methods N  = 208 peritoneal lesions were created in 26 adult Wistar rats. In each animal, lesions on one flank were randomly chosen for treatment with locally injected prednisolone whereas the contralateral side was injected with normal saline. Half of the animals were randomly selected for early a…

2001

Purpose. To compare the ocular hypotensive effect of different antiglaucomatous eye drops. Patients and methods. This double-blind, randomized study included 119 eyes of 119 patients without other ocular pathology undergoing standardized (one surgeon, Healon) small incision cataract surgery with foldable intraocular lens implantation. The patients were assigned to one of five groups: group 1:0.25% timolol in Gelrite (extended efficacy, n=23); group 2: 2% dorzolamide (n=24); group 3: combination of 0.5% timolol plus 2% dorzolamide (n=22); group 4: brimonidine (n=26); group 5: gentamicin (control, n=24). Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured preoperatively and at 3±1,6±1,9±1,24±3, and 48±3 h…

Quality of life in patients with dysphagia after radiation and chemotherapy treatment for head and neck tumors

2013

Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze subjectively, using the SWAL-QOL questionnaire, swallowing dysfunction and associated factors after treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in patients treated for head and neck cancer. Material and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, based on the selection of patients with tumors of the head and neck area, treated with radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy during the years 2000 to 2006 at the Oncology Institute of Juiz de Fora. The data were analyzed using SPSS 15.0 software, and were evaluated using the chi-square test to compare differences in proportions between groups. The statistical significance level was set at 5%.
