The social gradient in stress and depressive symptoms among adolescent girls: A systematic review and narrative synthesis

2019

Aim: Socioeconomic inequality is found to negatively influence mental health, but studies investigating the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and specific common mental health problems such as stress and depressive symptoms in the general adolescent population are needed. Moreover, gender gaps in mental health among adolescents are evident, but there is a lack of studies that investigate socioeconomic differences in mental health within genders. As girls report consistently more depressive symptoms than do boys, this systematic review specifically investigates whether socioeconomic status is associated with stress and depressive symptoms among adolescent girls in the general p…

El TRATAMIENTO PERIODÍSTICO DE LAS NOTICIAS RELACIONADAS CON LOS VIRUS DEL DENGUE Y ZIKA EN LOS MEDIOS DIGITALES DE HONDURAS (2010-2017)

2019

Mortality and socioeconomic indicators in Spain 1962-1991

2000

Background: The study objectives were to describe the evolution of mortality and some socioeconomic indicators in the Spanish provinces (n=50) in order to quantify their association and assess the capability of these socioeconomic factors in explaining mortality levels in the Spanish provinces over the period 1962–1991. Methods: An ecological cross-sectional study was performed in order to assess the relationships between some socioeconomic indicators and mortality in Spain. Data on both-sexes, all-causes, age-adjusted mortality and infant mortality, gross national product per head, economically active population and unemployment rates, population density, state hospital functioning beds an…

Aging on Indian Reservations: The Ugly, the Bad, and the Good

2012

This chapter examines the conditions for the older population on Indian reservations and how those conditions compare to the non-Indian population. The discussion opens on a national level, though the focus is on tribes in the Western United States. Older Indians on reservations are aging in a society where they are an almost invisible part of rural America. Yet the reservations, despite the poor socioeconomic conditions on many, represent home and a place for off-reservation Native Americans to come back to. To include the voices of Indian elders and gain insights into how they perceive being elders, we report on interviews conducted with older Indians on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho…

Distribution, ecology and conservation status of Dionysia involucrata Zaprjag., an endangered endemic of Hissar Mts (Tajikistan, Middle Asia)

2014

Dionysia involucrata Zaprjag. (Primulaceae) is known as critically endangered endemic species of Hissar Mountains in Tajikistan. It is reported from few localities mainly in Varzob River valley and its tributaries. The species inhabits steep or overhanging faces of granite rocks in narrow river gorges. During the research all known populations of D. involucrata were examined in respect of the habitat conditions and species composition of vegetation plots. We analyzed the population extent of the species in its range in Tajikistan and the main threats in order to assess its conservation status. The detrended correspondence analysis was performed on a…

Parents' Physical Activity, Socioeconomic Status and Education as Predictors of Physical Activity and Sport among Children and Youths - A 12-Year Fol…

1996

The purpose of this study was to examine parental influences on children's participation in sport and their later physical activity. The population for the study consisted of a random sample of 1881 9- to 15-year-old boys and girls who were exposed to the extensive research program called "Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns" in 1980. They and their parents have been followed up for twelve years at three-year intervals by means of a short questionnaire concerning physical activity and other factors. The results indicated that the fathers' physical activity in 1980 was related to their children's habitual physical activity in the same year, and gave in boys and girls a significant prediction…

Population trends of birds across the iron curtain: Brain matters

2011

One approach to assess human impact on species’ population dynamics is to correlate ecological traits of species with their long-term population trends. Yet, few studies investigated population trends in multiple regions that differ in human impact to reveal which traits explain population trends over larger geographic areas and which only regionally. We examined the relationship between various species traits and long-term population trends of 57 common passerine bird species from 1991 to 2007 in three adjacent regions in central Europe that experienced differences in socioeconomic history: North-Western Germany, Eastern Germany and the Czech Republic. We tested effects of habitat, dietary…

2020

Importance Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with impaired educational performance. Previous studies on the disorder could not control for important measured and unmeasured confounders. Objective To prospectively investigate the association between PTSD and objective indicators of educational attainment across the life span, controlling for familial factors shared by full siblings, psychiatric comorbidity, and general cognitive ability. Design, Setting, and Participants This population-based cohort study included 2 244 193 individuals born in Sweden between January 1, 1973, and December 31, 1997, who were followed-up until December 31, 2013. Clusters of full siblings …

Does better education mitigate risky health behavior? A mendelian randomization study.

2022

Education and risky health behaviors are strongly negatively correlated. Education may affect health behaviors by enabling healthier choices through higher disposable income, increasing information about the harmful effects of risky health behaviors, or altering time preferences. Alternatively, the observed negative correlation may stem from reverse causality or unobserved confounders. Based on the data from the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study linked to register-based information on educational attainment and family background, this paper identifies the causal effect of education on risky health behaviors. To examine causal effects, we used a genetic score as an instrument for year…
