TH-302 + Gemcitabine (G + T) vs Gemcitabine (G) in Patients with Previously Untreated advanced Pancreatic Cancer (PAC)
2012
ABSTRACT Background TH-302 is a hypoxia targeted prodrug with a hypoxia-triggered 2-nitroimidazole component designed to release the DNA alkylator, bromo-isophosphoramide mustard (Br-IPM), when reduced in severe hypoxia. A randomized Phase 2B study (NCT01144455) was conducted to assess the benefit of G + T to standard dose G as first-line therapy of PAC. Materials and methods An open-label multi-center study of two dose levels of TH-302 (240 mg/m2 or 340 mg/m2) in combination with G versus G alone (randomized 1:1:1). G (1000 mg/m2) and T were administered IV over 30-60 minutes on Days 1, 8 and 15 of a 28-day cycle. Patients on the G could crossover after progression and be randomized to a G…

Vaccination greatly reduces disease, disability, death and inequity worldwide
2007
In low-income countries, infectious diseases still account for a large proportion of deaths, highlighting health inequities largely caused by economic differences. Vaccination can cut health-care costs and reduce these inequities. Disease control, elimination or eradication can save billions of US dollars for communities and countries. Vaccines have lowered the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma and will control cervical cancer. Travellers can be protected against "exotic" diseases by appropriate vaccination. Vaccines are considered indispensable against bioterrorism. They can combat resistance to antibiotics in some pathogens. Noncommunicable diseases, such as ischaemic heart disease, c…
Depression, anxiety and health status across different BMI classes: A representative study in Germany
2020
Abstract Background Changes in body mass index (BMI) over the course of one's lifetime are related to the development of mental disorders. In the current study we compared symptoms of depression, generalized anxiety as well as general health status in the four BMI-classes: underweight, normal weight, overweight and obesity. Furthermore, mediator role of general health status on the relationship between BMI and depression and generalized anxiety was analyzed. Methods A representative sample (random-route sampling) of the German population (N = 2350) was investigated in a cross-sectional survey by measuring the three questionnaires PHQ-9, GAD-7 and EQ-5D-5L. Results The results showed signifi…
The Lancet Psychiatry Commission: a blueprint for protecting physical health in people with mental illness.
2019
The poor physical health of people with mental illness is a multifaceted, transdiagnostic, and global problem. People with mental illness have an increased risk of physical disease, as well as reduced access to adequate health care. As a result, physical health disparities are observed across the entire spectrum of mental illnesses in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries. The high rate of physical comorbidity, which often has poor clinical management, drastically reduces life expectancy for people with mental illness, and also increases the personal, social, and economic burden of mental illness across the lifespan. This Commission summarises advances in understanding on the…
Predicting survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma treated by transarterial chemoembolisation
2011
Aliment Pharmacol Ther 2011; 34: 196–204 Summary Background Transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) is first-line treatment in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and rescue treatment after failure of radical treatments in early stage HCC. Prognostic tools for HCC using time-fixed Cox models may be unreliable in patients treated with TACE because time-varying predictors interact. Aim To explore time-dependent variables as survival predictors in patients with HCC receiving TACE as first-line or second-line treatment. Methods Eighty four consecutive patients with HCC (mean age 68; male gender 62%; Child-Pugh class: A n = 73, B n = 11; Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer class: A n = 44, B…
Home Parenteral Nutrition
2012
Parenteral nutrition (PN) involves the administration of fluids and nutrients using routes other than the gut, although usually involves central venous catheters (CVC). Home PN (HPN) refers to instances where this nutritional support is administered in the patient's home. Although this form of treatment is expensive and complex, it facilitates patients’ social rehabilitation, returning them to their home environment, reducing healthcare costs, and improving quality of life (QoL). Pediatric patients present specific technical characteristics, as not only should a proper nutritional status be maintained, but also optimal growth and development.
Inpatient Step Counts, Symptom Severity, and Perceived Health Status After Lung Resection Surgery.
2020
BACKGROUND The clinical relevance of inpatient step counts after lung surgery remains unknown. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to identify those factors related to physical activity measured by step count, during the inpatient stay, and its relationship with symptom severity and perceived health status at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. METHODS We studied the inpatient step count of 73 participants who underwent lung resection surgery. The number of steps was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. The health status and the severity of symptoms were examined at hospital admission, discharge, and 1 month after discharge. RESULTS Of the 73 participants, 35 wer…
The association of patient age with postoperative morbidity and mortality following resection of intracranial tumors
2021
Abstract Introduction The postoperative functional status of patients with intracranial tumors is influenced by patient-specific factors, including age. Research question This study aimed to elucidate the association between age and postoperative morbidity or mortality following the resection of brain tumors. Material and methods A multicenter database was retrospectively reviewed. Functional status was assessed before and 3–6 months after tumor resection by the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS). Uni- and multivariable linear regression were used to estimate the association of age with postoperative change in KPS. Logistic regression models for a ≥10-point decline in KPS or mortality were b…
Nutrition and acne: therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets.
2011
The influence of nutrition on skin health is a growing research area but the findings of various studies on the effect of diet on the development of acne have often been contradictory. The general opinion among researchers has oscillated between two different, opposing positions: that diet either is or is not a key factor for acne development. This review examines the evidence supporting an influence of various dietary components on the development of acne particularly focusing on the role played by carbohydrates. The physiological and biochemical effects of the ketogenic diet are examined from this perspective and mechanisms will be proposed via which this type of diet could have a role in…
