Energy spectrum, persistent current and electron localization in quantum rings

2003

Energy spectra of quasi-one-dimensional quantum rings with a few electrons are studied using several different theoretical methods. Discrete Hubbard models and continuum models are shown to give similar results governed by the special features of the one-dimensionality. The energy spectrum of the many-body system can be described with a rotation-vibration spectrum of a 'Wigner molecule' of 'localized' electrons, combined with the spin-state determined from an effective antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. The persistent current as a function of magnetic flux through the ring shows periodic oscillations arising from the 'rigid rotation' of the electron ring. For polarized electrons the …

Quantum rings for beginners: Energy spectra and persistent currents

2003

Theoretical approaches to one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional quantum rings with a few electrons are reviewed. Discrete Hubbard-type models and continuum models are shown to give similar results governed by the special features of the one-dimensionality. The energy spectrum of the many-body states can be described by a rotation-vibration spectrum of a 'Wigner molecule' of 'localized' electrons, combined with the spin-state determined from an effective antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Hamiltonian. Persistent Currents in Small, Imperfect Hubbard Rings

2003

We have done a study with small, imperfect Hubbard rings with exact diagonalization. The results for few-electron rings show, that the imperfection, whether localized or not, nearly always decrease, but can also \emph{increase} the persistent current, depending on the character of the imperfection and the on-site interaction. The calculations are generally in agreement with more specialized studies. In most cases the electron spin plays an important role.

Optimal persistent currents for interacting bosons on a ring with a gauge field

2013

We study persistent currents for interacting one-dimensional bosons on a tight ring trap, subjected to a rotating barrier potential, which induces an artificial U(1) gauge field. We show that, at intermediate interactions, the persistent current response is maximal, due to a subtle interplay of effects due to the barrier, the interaction and quantum fluctuations. These results are relevant for ongoing experiments with ultracold atomic gases on mesoscopic rings.

Large diamagnetic persistent currents

2007

In multichannel rings, evanescent modes will always co-exist with propagating modes. The evanescent modes can carry a very large diamagnetic persistent current that can oscillate with energy and are very sensitive to impurity scattering. This provides a natural explanation for the large diamagnetic persistent currents observed in experiments.

Current-spin-density-functional study of persistent currents in quantum rings

2000

We present a numerical study of persistent currents in quantum rings using current spin density functional theory (CSDFT). This formalism allows for a systematic study of the joint effects of both spin, interactions and impurities for realistic systems. It is illustrated that CSDFT is suitable for describing the physical effects related to Aharonov-Bohm phases by comparing energy spectra of impurity-free rings to existing exact diagonalization and experimental results. Further, we examine the effects of a symmetry-breaking impurity potential on the density and current characteristics of the system and propose that narrowing the confining potential at fixed impurity potential will suppress t…

Self‐consistent intermediate Hamiltonians : A coupled cluster type formulation of the singles and doubles configuration interaction matrix dressing

1995

This paper presents a new self‐consistent dressing of a singles and doubles configuration interaction matrix which insures size‐consistency, separability into closed‐shell subsystems if localized molecular orbitals (MOs) are used, and which includes all fourth order corrections. This method yields, among several schemes, a reformulation of the coupled cluster method, including fully the cluster operators of single and double excitations, and partially those of the triples (Bartlett’s algorithm named CCSDT‐1a). Further improvement can be easily included by adding exclusion principle violating corrections. Since it leads to a matrix diagonalization, the method behaves correctly in case of nea…

Geometry, pregeometry and beyond

2005

This article explores the overall geometric manner in which human beings make sense of the world around them by means of their physical theories; in particular, in what are nowadays called pregeometric pictures of Nature. In these, the pseudo-Riemannian manifold of general relativity is considered a flawed description of spacetime and it is attempted to replace it by theoretical constructs of a different character, ontologically prior to it. However, despite its claims to the contrary, pregeometry is found to surreptitiously and unavoidably fall prey to the very mode of description it endeavours to evade, as evidenced in its all-pervading geometric understanding of the world. The question r…

Solution of self-consistent equations for the N3LO nuclear energy density functional in spherical symmetry. The program hosphe (v1.02)

2010

Abstract We present solution of self-consistent equations for the N 3 LO nuclear energy density functional. We derive general expressions for the mean fields expressed as differential operators depending on densities and for the densities expressed in terms of derivatives of wave functions. These expressions are then specified to the case of spherical symmetry. We also present the computer program hosphe (v1.02), which solves the self-consistent equations by using the expansion of single-particle wave functions on the spherical harmonic oscillator basis. Aharonov–Bohm/Casher effect in a Kondo ring

2000

The in#uence of a magnetic impurity or ultrasmall quantum dot on the spin and charge persistent currents of a mesoscopic ring is investigated. The system consists of electrons in a one-dimensional ring threaded by spin-dependent Aharonov}Bohm/Casher #uxes, and coupled via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction to a localized electron. The problem is mapped onto a Kondo model for the even-parity channel plus free electrons in the odd-parity channel. The twisted boundary conditions representing the #uxes couple states of opposite parity unless the twist angles / a satisfy / a "f a p, where f a are integers, with spin index a"C, B. For these special values of / a , the model is solvable by …
