Probabilistic inference and syllogisms
2014
Traditionally, syllogisms are arguments with two premises and one conclusion which are constructed by propositions of the form “All S are P ” and “At least one S is P ” and their respective negated versions. We will discuss probabilistic notions of the existential import and the basic sentences type. We will develop an intuitively plausible version of the syllogisms that is able to deal with uncertainty, exceptions and nonmonotonicity. We will develop a new semantics for categorical syllogisms that is based on subjective probability. Specifically, we propose de Finetti’s principle of coherence and its generalization to lower and upper conditional probabilities as the fundamental corner ston…
Drug eluting stents's use in patients with anatomical or clinical patterns favouring restenosis: a 6-months follow-up study
2005
LO STENT INTERNO-ESTERNO COME STRUMENTO DIAGNOSTICO PER L’IDENTIFICAZIONE PRECOCE DELLA GLOMERULOSCLEROSI FOCALE SEGMENTALE NEI RICEVENTI IL TRAPIANT…
2009
Reoperation for persistent or recurrent secondary hyperparathyroidism
2017
Background: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is a common acquired disorder seen in chronic renal failure. Its pathophysiology is mainly due to hyperphosphatemia and vitamin D deficiency and resistance. When medical treatment fails, subtotal and total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation are the standard procedures, although both are associated with high recurrence rates. Methods and Results: 4 patients experienced persistence and 9 relapse. The first 4 were subjected to reoperation after 6 months for the persistence of symptoms due to the finding of a supernumerary adenomatous gland while the remaining patients at the reoperation showed in 5 cases 2 more glands in over thymic position, an…
ENDOTRACHEAL STENT IN A CASE OF SEVERE TRACHEAL STENOSIS FROM RELAPSING GOITER
2009
Objectives:The surgical approach for tracheal complications in thyroidectomy sometimes requires tracheotomy in urgency for supporting the airways flow (especially in presence of giant goiter). Nevertheless, tracheotomy, even if necessary to guarantee the restoration of respiratory function, it can not be considered as definitive therapy in presence of alterations of trachea (i.e. stenosis) susceptible to heal. An useful help in clinical management comes by tracheal prosthesis as we showed in a case of a giant relapsing multinodular goiter. Materials and methods: A 72 yr old woman, affected by giant relapsing goiter rapidly growing, came to our observation with severe orthopnea, due to steno…
Chimney endografting for pararenal aortic pathologies using transfemoral access and the lift technique
2013
Purpose: To present a technique for transfemoral implantation of parallel grafts into the renal arteries in patients with anatomy or morphology that blocks standard antegrade chimney graft delivery. Technique: In a totally percutaneous approach, a 5-F pigtail angiographic catheter is passed into the aorta above the renal arteries via a 0.035-inch hydrophilic guidewire, followed by an 8-F sheath. The target vessel is cannulated with the hydrophilic wire followed by a 5-F reverse curve catheter; the wire is changed for a Rosen wire. The main stent-graft body is delivered and parked at the level of the aortic bifurcation. The Viabahn chimney endograft is advanced ~1 to 2 cm into the target ren…
Short-run and long-run persistence of bad health among elderly
2019
We study the health dynamics among older Americans using ten waves of the Health and Retirement Study following a spell-approach and a regression-based approach. The former is fully non parametric synthesizing the sequences of health status into a Health Persistence Index. The latter approach relies on a Latent Markov (LM) model capturing persistence in poor health by modelling time-varying unobserved heterogeneity. Our results show that only few elders experiences persistently a poor health status. The higher values of the index are consistently observed with the main socio-demo-economic risk factors. Moreover LM model indicates the existence of three unobserved groups differing in their p…
Responsibility in uncertain times: an institutional perspective on precaution
2008
Precaution is a key issue in environmental governance. Variously defined, intensively debated and introduced in many regulations, its meaning, scope and application remain problematic. This article argues that the controversy on precaution is a matter of culturally patterned expectations concerning the production and use of knowledge and the related social positions and responsibilities. The way uncertainty and its role in the policy process are understood is crucial. For some precaution is a flawed concept, to be accommodated to the current expert-based cooperative scheme. For others it is a major innovation requiring a rearrangement of the latter. Precautionary policies may evolve in dif…
Rethinking age in athletic retirement: An existential-narrative perspective
2015
The aim of this paper is to examine theoretical understandings of athletic career and career termination from an existential-narrative perspective. Our critical analysis suggests that career models and many research texts have an implicit understanding of sport as a profession and propose a normative end to the career when athletes no longer improve their results. Being framed by Western cultural narratives of ageing as decline, the aforementioned career models disregard athletes’ subjective careers and their agency in bringing meaning to experiences of ageing and decline in athletic performance. While the main focus of this paper is on theoretical analysis, some empirical findings from our…
Optimism mediates the relationships between meaning in life and subjective and psychological well-being among late adolescents
2018
BackgroundThe concepts of meaning in life and well-being appear to have structural and functional connections, which become even more noticeable when examining their role in individuals’ daily functioning. One of the prospective variables which can play a mediational role between meaning in life and subjective and psychological well-being may be optimism, which also holds an important motivational value for young people. The aim of this study was to examine the predictive value of meaning in life and optimism, and indirect effects between meaning in life and subjective and psychological well-being among Polish late adoles-cents within the self-concordant model.Participants and procedureA to…
