Genotoxic potential of by-products in drinking water in relation to water disinfection: Survey of pre-ozonated and post-chlorinated drinking water by…

2006

Mutagenic potential of drinking water samples derived from ranneywells was studied. 100-100 l of untreated (rough) and ozone-treated as well as chlorinated-disinfected water were dropped on and adsorbed by macroreticular resin columns (Serdolit PAD-III and Amberlite XAD-2). The adsorbed material was desorbed by methanol and dichloromethane. After elimination of the solvents by vacuum distillation the adsorbed material was dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide. The mutagenic activity was tested in the Ames-Salmonella/rat liver microsome system. The tester strains were TA-98 and TA-100. The material adsorbed to Serdolit PAD-III from rough and also disinfected water did not induce mutagenicity in cas…

Aseptic Production vs. Terminal Sterilization

2000

The safety of substance use in intraocular surgery ideally requires the absence of all biologically-active components capable of causing an inflammatory reaction. Substance purity is achieved with isolation and cleansing methods (e.g., of the polysaccharide), which remove any biological component with infective potential. The methods of production for polysaccharide isolation should remove biological agents, regardless of its origin. Hyaluronic acid is isolated either from rooster combs or biological fermentation. Use of this substance showed the development of postoperative intraocular inflammatory reactions resulting from contaminations from both sources. OVD should have low endotoxin val…

Comparing the antibacterial activity of gaseous ozone and chlorhexidine solution on a tooth cavity model

2013

Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial activity of gaseous ozone andchlorhexidine solution on a tooth cavity model. Study Design: Twenty-one human molars were divided into 3 groups. Cavities were then cut into the teeth (4 per tooth, 28 cavities per group). After sterilization, the teeth wereleft in broth cultures of 106 colony-forming units (CFU) ml-1 of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) at 36°C for 48 h. The appropriate treatment followed (group A, control; group B, 2% chlorhexidine solution; and group C, 80s of treatment with ozone, and the cavities were thenfilled with compositeresin. After 72h, the restorations were removed, dentin chips were collected with an excavator, and the total…

Chemical transformations of glucose in solutions for peritoneal dialysis after sterilization and during storage

2018

The objective of this work was to estimate glucose degradation products (GDPs) in solutions for peritoneal dialysis (PD) including glucose and sodium lactate based on the change of pH and absorption of ultraviolet (UV) light. Spectrophotometric and pH-metric methods were used to measure glucose degradation and transformation of GDPs in laboratory-made solutions after heat sterilization and during storage. Mechanism of transformations of GDPs in the sterilized solutions for PD during storage and spectral characteristic of 5-HMF were studied. Common features for all the batches of the tested solutions for PD after heat sterilization were a reduce in pH, increase in the absorbance in the range…

Inherited semisterility for control of harmful insects. II. Degree of sterility and types of translocations in the mosquito Culex pipiens L.

1971

Risk perception of sars-cov-2 infection and implementation of various protective measures by dentists across various countries

2021

Objective: Healthcare workers in general are at a high risk of potential infections with COVID-19, especially those who work with aerosol generating procedures. Dentists fall in this category, as not only do they operate with aerosol generating procedures but also operate within a face-to-face contact area. Methods: A structured self-administered questionnaire was developed at Najran University and provided to the participants for data collection. The data collected included information on risk perception and incorporation of measures for protection against COVID-19 to gauge the attitude of dentists during this period. Also, clinical implementation of various protective measures was reviewe…

A self-sterilizing fluorescent Nanocomposite as versatile material with broad-spectrum Antibiofilm features

2020

Abstract Hematogenous spread of infections from colonized central intravenous catheters or central lines is a long-recognized problem with infection rates of 2 and 6.8 per 1000 days, respectively. Besides, removal of severe microbial colonization of implanted biomaterials is still a challenge and usually requires invasive operations. Hence, on demand self-sterilizing materials are required to avoid explant of colonized biomaterials and improve patient compliance. Moreover, photoluminescence is needed to make trackable biomaterials, which can be easily monitored upon implanting them in the body. Here, we propose the incorporation of near infrared (NIR) sensitive red-emitting carbon nanodot (…

STERILIZZAZIONE CON MICROONDE DI RIFIUTI SANITARI: DETERMINAZIONE DIRETTA DELL’EFFICACIA DEL PROCESSO

2018

In the sterilization of those Health Care Waste that are marked as possibly infectious, microwaves (MW) have long been proposed as an alternative means to steam. The effectiveness of the operation is assessed determining the fraction that has survived to the sterilizing agent of a known starting population of micro-organisms. Customarily, this population is introduced into the waste mass in the form of one or more sealed vials. These make up an artificial environment which is completely under control; but onto it the sterilizing agent could a priori behave with higher or lower effectiveness, compared with the loose mass which is directly exposed to it. As far as the traditional steam steril…

La vasectomia a sostegno del piacere: analisi casistica e considerazioni medico legali

2012

In Italy, the resort to vasectomy, surgery adapted to determine an irreversible alteration of the physical state of an individual, resulting in the loss of the ability to procreate, is somewhat reduced compared to the others European countries, even though legitimate, it carries the disadvantage of the absence of a clear and univocal legislation concerning surgical sterilization. Despite, in recent years there has been a change in the assessment of such surgery. Nevertheless, is relevant that in the Italian legal system still lacks a regulatory of such medical-surgery activities, although several bills have been submitted to the competent parliamentary bodies. The attitude of indifference t…

Seeds vitality and fungal contamination in Abies nebrodensis

2022

Seeds of Abies nebrodensis were subjected to laboratory tests aimed to detect fungal contaminants and to obtain xenobiotic-free seedlings, by the use of different surface sterilising agents. Moreover, hot water at 60°C was used to suppress any fungal microorganisms colonizing the inner tissues. Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus and Stemphylium vesicarium were the most frequent fungal contaminants. Non-contaminated seeds showed germination values ranging from 0 to 36.4% depending on the applied sterilization protocol. Further analyses will be carried out to establish the influence of these fungi on the seed germination process and their relationship with seedlings of A. nebrodensis.
