Systematic research about mental illnesses has been conducted for many years in Poland and all around the world. Many studies of this topic have been conducted since then. The following work presents an overview of results of studies about mental illnesses – definitione of the concept, Classification of disorders as well as problems of stigmatization and self-stigma in the modern world. Many prevention programs face a dilemma between delivering abstinence objectives and pursuing more nuanced, harm reductionist aims. The main subject of this article are social consequences of the results of the referendum regarding UK departure from the structures of the European Union. The author focuses on the social repercussions in the perception of British citizens and “foreigners” in the face of potential leave the European community, referred to as “Brexit”. The main focus of the author are still current issues of diversity, division “us” versus “foreigners”, stigma and social exclusion.
