Persistent cow's milk protein intolerance in infants: the changing faces of the same disease

1998

Background Recent research has shown that cow's milk protein intolerance (CMPI) often persists beyond 4 years of age. Aims To evaluate the clinical and immunological characteristics of a group of infants with persistent CMPI. Patients and methods Twelve infants (6 m, 6f) with persistent CMPI were followed up from birth until a median age of 5 years. The patients underwent CMP challenge each year to evaluate CMP-tolerance. As controls we followed 26 infants (12 m, 14 f) with CMPI that resolved within 1–2 years. Results A family history of atopic disease was found in 10/12 patients with persistent CMPI and in 10/26 controls (P < 0.01). Clinical presentation changed over time: at onset symptom…

Effectiveness and tolerability of amidotrizoate for the treatment of constipation resistant to laxatives in advanced cancer patients.

2011

Abstract Context Constipation is a common problem for advanced cancer patients, and is generally inadequately treated. Objectives The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of amidotrizoate (AM) in patients unresponsive to current laxatives. Methods A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients was surveyed. Inclusion criteria were no bowel movements for three days despite receiving regular doses of senna or lactulose. AM 50mL was administered orally; the dose could be repeated the day after, based on clinical judgment and/or patients' preference. Age, sex, primary tumor, previous abdominal surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy performed in th…

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Patient Assessment of Constipation-Symptoms (PAC-SYM) among patients with chronic constipation.

2015

Background and aim: PAC-SYM is widely adopted to asses constipation severity. However, it has been validated in a small sample, few items have been included based on expert opinion and not on empirical grounds, and its factor structure has never been replicated. We aimed at evaluating the psychometric properties of PAC-SYM in patients with chronic constipation. Methods: We enrolled 2,203 outpatients with chronic constipation in two waves. We used wave I sample to test the psychometric properties of the PAC-SYM and wave II sample to cross-validate its factor structure, to assess criterion validity, responsiveness to clinical change, and its minimal clinically important difference. Results: O…

Extraprostatic Spindle Cell Stromal Tumor of the Prostate: Case Report

2007

Several benign and malignant nonepithelial and stromal-like lesions arise in the prostate. Because such lesions are rare, their recognition is essential, because treatment and prognosis depend on an adequate pathohistologic classification. We report a case of an 83-year-old man with a stromal tumor of the prostate of uncertain malignant potential (STUMP). He presented with urinary retention and rectal constipation. On bimanual examination, a rectally and suprapubically palpable mass was found. Imaging studies revealed a 12 x 8 cm pararectal inhomogeneous mass of uncertain origin compressing rectum and urethra. The tumor was resected by a retropubic approach and examined immunohistochemicall…

Efficacy and safety profile of LCR35 complete freeze-dried culture in irritable bowel syndrome: A randomized, double-blind study

2011

International audience; AIM: To assess the effects and safety of Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus LCR35 complete freeze-dried culture (LCR35) in patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: A randomized, double-blind pilot study was performed in 50 patients complaining of IBS symptoms complying with Rome III criteria. Patients were allocated to receive either LCR35 (n = 25) at a minimum daily dose of 6 × 10(8) colony forming units or placebo (n = 25) for 4 wk. At inclusion, after treatment and 2 wk later, patients completed the IBS severity scale. Change from baseline in the IBS severity score at the end of treatment was the primary efficacy criterion. Changes were compared…

Multiple food hypersensitivity as a cause of refractory chronic constipation in adults

2006

Chronic constipation that is unresponsive to laxative treatment is a severe illness, but children unresponsive to laxatives have been successfully treated with an elimination diet. We report the first cases of refractory chronic constipation caused by food hypersensitivity in adults. Four patients with refractory constipation who were unresponsive to high doses of laxatives were put on an oligo-antigenic diet and underwent successive double-blind, placebo-controlled, food challenges (DBPFC). Routine laboratory tests, immunological assays, colonoscopy, esophago-gastroduodenoscopy and rectal and duodenal histology were performed. While on an elimination diet, bowel habits normalized in all pa…

The effect of probiotics as a treatment for constipation in elderly people: A systematic review.

2016

Abstract Purpose Treating constipation in elderly people remains a challenge; the administration of probiotics may be a valid therapy for this problem as an alternative to traditional drug-based treatments. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the efficiency of probiotics in treating constipation in elderly people. Methods Articles related to this topic and published, without any time limitations, in the Medline, Embase, Scopus, Lilacs, or Cochrane databases were systematically reviewed according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The primary search terms were ‘constipation’ and ‘probiotics’. The main inclusion crite…

Estreñimiento funcional: estudio prospectivo y respuesta al tratamiento

2005

Retroaortic left renal vein and inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm

2010

The aim of this study was to report successful surgical management of an inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with a retroaortic left renal vein. The patient, a 78-year-old man, presented with diffuse abdominal pain, fever, and constipation. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed soft tissue surrounding the aneurysm and a left renal vein behind the aorta. Intraoperative findings confirmed the CT images. The patient is alive and well 6 months postoperatively.

Rainfall timing and runoff: The influence of the criterion for rain event separation

2016

Abstract Rain is not uniform in time and space in semiarid areas and its distribution is very important for the runoff process. Hydrological studies usually divide rainfall into events. However, defining rain events is complicated, and rain characteristics vary depending on how the events are delimited. Choosing a minimum inter-event time (MIT) is a commonly used criterion. Our hypothesis is that there will be an optimal MIT that explains the maximum part of the variance of the runoff, with time to runoff used as a surrogate. The objective is to establish a procedure in order to decide upon this optimal MIT. We developed regressions between time to runoff (T0) and three descriptive variable…
