Morphological and genome-wide evidence for natural hybridisation within the genus Stipa (Poaceae)

2020

AbstractHybridisation in the wild between closely related species is a common mechanism of speciation in the plant kingdom and, in particular, in the grass family. Here we explore the potential for natural hybridisation in Stipa (one of the largest genera in Poaceae) between genetically distant species at their distribution edges in Mountains of Central Asia using integrative taxonomy. Our research highlights the applicability of classical morphological and genome reduction approaches in studies on wild plant species. The obtained results revealed a new nothospecies, Stipa × lazkovii, which exhibits intermediate characters to S. krylovii and S. bungeana. A high-density DArTseq assay disclos…

Vegetation of rock clefts and ledges in the Pamir Alai Mts, Tajikistan (Middle Asia)

2014

AbstractThe paper presents the results of phytosociological research conducted on the vegetation of rock clefts and ledges in the Pamir-Alai Mountains (Tajikistan, Middle Asia). During the field studies, done in 2010–2012, 101 phytosociological relevés were taken. Plant species were recorded according to the Braun-Blanquet cover-abundance scale. Communities of calcareous rock clefts and ledges with small soil amounts from several ranges (Zeravshan Mts, Hissar Mts, Hazratishokh Mts, Darvaz Mts, Rushan Mts and Vanch Mts), inhabiting mainly the alpine and subnival zone, have been described. A synopsis of the rock communities of the Pamir-Alai is proposed. In the examined vegetation plots 77 va…

Intestinal transport in constipation and diarrhoea.

1988

Approximatively 10 liters of fluid enter the gastrointestinal tract with food and endogenous secretions, and only less than 100 ml or 1% leave it with the faeces. Minor changes of this equilibrium in the intestinal transport may cause diarrhoea or constipation. Functions of small and large intestine differ markedly in transport of electrolytes and water. The relatively leaky epithelium of the small intestine allows for rapid equilibrium of osmolality in both directions while the tight epithelium of the colon preserves electrolytes and water once they have been absorbed. It may compensate secretory diarrhoea of the small intestine for instance caused by bacterial toxins to a certain degree u…

Retroaortic left renal vein and inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm

2010

The aim of this study was to report successful surgical management of an inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with a retroaortic left renal vein. The patient, a 78-year-old man, presented with diffuse abdominal pain, fever, and constipation. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed soft tissue surrounding the aneurysm and a left renal vein behind the aorta. Intraoperative findings confirmed the CT images. The patient is alive and well 6 months postoperatively.

Repeated pull-through surgery for complicated Hirschsprung's disease--principles derived from clinical experience.

2007

Abstract Background In some patients, an initial pull-through procedure for Hirschsprung's disease fails, and obstructive symptoms persist or recur. Then a repeated pull-through operation may be necessary. Methods Seventeen patients with Hirschsprung's disease aged 2 to 9 years (median, 4.6 years) have undergone a repeated pull-through procedure because of unresponsive symptoms after an initial operation. The initial procedure was Soave in 3 patients, Rehbein in 13 patients, and Duhamel in 1 patient. Surgical revision was indicated by incomplete resection of the transition zone in 16 patients, anastomotic strictures in 9 patients, and fistulas in 2 patients. All 17 patients have undergone R…

OBSTRUCTED DEFECATION SYNDROME AND CHRONIC CONSTIPATION: CLINICAL AND SURGICAL ANALYSIS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

2022

Chronic constipation and Obstructed defecation Syndrome (ODS) represent a high-incidence pathological status that severely compromise of Quality of Life (QoL). Our multidisciplinary study is aimed to investigate how the resolution of ODS by surgical technique can improve long-term clinical symptoms and the state of physical and mental health and QoL, focusing on the dual interaction between psyche and intestine Chronic constipation and Obstructed Defectaion Syndrome represent a high-incidence pathological status that severely compromise of Quality of Life. Stipa valdemonensis (Poaceae), a new species from Sicily

2012

A new species of Stipa, endemic to Sicily, is here described and named Stipa valdemonensis. The new taxon is related to S. crassiculmis. Owing to the small number of individuals observed, in few restricted localities only, it is assigned the IUCN threat status “vulnerable”

The management of the slow transit constipation in the laparoscopic era

2018

The slow transit constipation (STC) is a functional bowel pathology with slow total gut transit time with normal calibre colon in addition to a variety of other systemic symptoms. Patients with an abnormal colonic motility refractory to conservative treatment are regarded as appropriate candidates for surgery. Laparoscopic total colectomy with ileum-rectum anastomosis represents the commonest surgical operation in the treatment of STC, in well selected patients, after failure of conservative treatment. From 2012 to 2016, 8 patients suffering constipation according to Roma III criteria and diagnosed as STC were submitted to a total colectomy in our O.U. We evaluated the long-term post-operat…

A new synonym and a new combination in Stipa aliena Keng (Poaceae: Stipa sect. Regelia)

2015

Stipa section Regelia comprises three species occurring in mountainous areas of Central Asia. One of them, S. smithii , was described by Martinovský in 1970, but the taxon has been overlooked in later taxonomical studies. The species was described with two varieties, var. smithii and var. macrocarpa . As a result of our taxonomical studies, we find the typical variety of the taxon to be conspecific with Stipa aliena , and propose that the second one be recognized as Stipa aliena var. macrocarpa comb. nov. Remarks on species belonging to section Regelia and micromorphological patterns of their lemma morphologies are discussed. A key to species close to S. aliena is provided.
