Female Preference and Adverse Developmental Effects of Glyphosate-Based Herbicides on Ecologically Relevant Traits in Japanese Quails
2019
Controversial glyphosate-based herbicides (GBHs) are the most frequently used herbicides globally. An increasing number of studies have identified GBH residues in soil, water, and even human food that may expose nontarget organisms including wildlife, livestock, and humans to health risks. After a heated debate, the European Union allowed the use of GBHs to continue until 2022, after which their risks will be re-evaluated. Thus, decision makers urgently need scientific evidence on GBH residues and their possible effects on ecosystems. An important, yet neglected, aspect is to assess whether animals show preference or avoidance for GBH-contaminated food, as it can influence the likelihood of…
ICT History Study as Corporate Philanthropy in Latvia
2019
There are two ICT museums in Latvia: the Riga Technical University Telecommunications Museum and the Computing Museum of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Latvia. Historical studies can be carried out at museums, institutes and universities, and professional communities. The type of history study funding can also vary. The article describes the possibilities for financing of computer museums. A comparison of museum metrics in the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands and Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia is subject to discussion. This comparison outlines the possible future museum reforms in the Baltic States. The authors review the public and private fu…
Robust Graph Topology Learning and Application in Stock Market Inference
2019
In many applications, there are multiple interacting entities, generating time series of data over the space. To describe the relation within the set of data, the underlying topology may be used. In many real applications, not only the signal/data of interest is measured in noise, but it is also contaminated with outliers. The proposed method, called RGTL, infers the graph topology from noisy measurements and removes these outliers simultaneously. Here, it is assumed that we have no information about the space graph topology, while we know that graph signal are sampled consecutively in time and thus the graph in time domain is given. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm h…
Abnormal Stock Market Returns Around Peaks in VIX: The Evidence of Investor Overreaction?
2016
Even though the VIX index was intended to be a measure of future volatility of the stock market, researchers argue that in reality VIX measures the investor sentiment. Anecdotal evidence suggests that peaks in VIX coincide with stock market bottoms followed by rallies, yet so far there have been no scientific evidence confirming this casual observation. In this paper we perform an event study of abnormal stock market returns around peaks in VIX and discuss our findings within the framework of behavioral finance theory. First of all, we detect peaks in VIX using formal turning-point identification procedures and provide detailed descriptive statistics of periods of rising and falling VIX. Th…
Combining Value and Momentum: Evidence from the Nordic Equity Market
2018
This is the first paper that explores Fisher, Shah and Titman’s (2016) average ranking approach for the value and momentum strategy in the Nordic equity market offering an exceptional experimental environment. Our results indicate that in the Nordic stock markets, the value anomaly offered excess returns in the 1993 to 2017 sample period only when small stocks were a part of the portfolio, whereas the momentum effect is strong and significant, irrespective of size. Interestingly, our findings also indicate that the negative correlation between value and momentum (Asness, Moskowitz and Pedersen, 2013) seems to be driven by growth stocks: Winner stocks that are value stocks generated 1.66% pe…
Micro-Economical Aspects of Public Projects: Impact Factors for Project Efficiency and Sustainability
2015
Project management approach in the public administration becoming gradually applied tool for implementation of different public programs and activities. Latvia has several methodological documentations to evaluate the possible benefits from infrastructure but still there is need for improvements as the only clear defined methodology is for transport sectors and those which have been provided by the European commission, but not always have been practically used in local municipalities’ project evaluations. Public projects, and planning for such projects, generally have the following characteristics: • Such projects are inherently risky due to long planning horizons and complex interfaces. • …
Research and Development Expenditures and Economic Growth in the EU: A Panel Data Analysis
2016
Abstract The main aim of the paper is to investigate the empirical relationship between research and development (R&D) expenditures and economic growth in the European Union member states in the period of 2000–2013. The empirical analysis is based on panel data regressions. The estimated model is the production function type standard growth model extended with R&D stock variable. The results show a statistically significant impact of R&D expenditures on the economic growth in the EU countries. The significance for R&D coefficient remains robust to different sub-periods, but the level of significance decreases as a sub-sample of new EU countries was considered.
Survey On Competence and Administration of Supervisory Board Activities in German Stock-Listed Companies
2017
Abstract According to the agency theory (Jensen & Meckling 1976), it is expected that there exists a positive relationship between corporate governance and company performance which is also generally assumed in recent research (Dignam & Galanis 2016). This relationship is investigated in the study performed by the author of this paper. Two different approaches were chosen in parallel: (1) quantitative data analysis, based on financial figures and corporate governance variables, and (2) a survey of supervisory board members of listed German companies. This paper is about the results of structured interviews with 30 supervisory board members. The survey confirms that corporate governa…

Henstock type integral in harmonic analysis on zero-dimensional groups
2006
AbstractA Henstock type integral is defined on compact subsets of a locally compact zero-dimensional abelian group. This integral is applied to obtain an inversion formula for the multiplicative integral transform.
